Book Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe

Download or read book Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe written by Ramon Flecha (Ed.) and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

Download or read book Student Characteristics Attitudes Towards Science Subject written by Salmi Md Zahid and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is carried out to examine the variation of attitudes towards science over Eighth Grade students in Malaysia. The study attempts to identify the determinants which affect students' attitude towards science using data from Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted in 2007. At total of 4466 students were involved in this study. Students' attitude towards science are represented by indices and classified into three different index categories. The indices are Index of Students'Positive Affect Towards Science (PATS), Index of Student's Self-Confidence in learning Science (SCS) and also Index of Student's Valuing Science (SVS). According to the results of this study, achievement in science and frequent use of computers to do science homework are significantly associated with all the three categories of attitude. Student who spoke the language of the test at home more frequently had higher level of positive affect than the student who less spoke the language of the test at home. While, students whose mother with higher education level had lower positive affect compared to students whose mother with lower education level.

Book Student Attitudes Student Anxieties and How to Address Them

Download or read book Student Attitudes Student Anxieties and How to Address Them written by Helge Kastrup and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a commitment to teaching science to everybody. What may work for training professional scientists does not work for general science education. Students bring to the classrooms preconceived attitudes, as well as the emotional baggage called ""science anxiety."" Students may regard science as cold, unfriendly, and even inherently hostile and biased against women. This book has been designed to deal with each of these issues and results from research in both Denmark and the United States. The first chapter discusses student attitudes towards science and the second discusses science anxiety. The connection between the two is discussed before the introduction of constructivism as a pedagogy that can aid science learning if it also addresses attitudes and anxieties. Much of the book elucidates what the authors have learned as science teachers and science education researchers. They studied various groups including university students majoring in the sciences, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, business, nursing, and eduction; high school students; teachers' seminary students; science teachers at all levels from middle school through college; and science administrators. The insights of these groups constitute the most important feature of the book, and by sharing them, the authors hope to help their fellow science teachers to understand student attitudes about science, to recognize the connections between these and science anxiety, and to see how a pedagogy that takes these into account can improve science learning.

Book The Effects of Informal Science Education on Students Attitudes and Academic Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Informal Science Education on Students Attitudes and Academic Performance written by Samuel Ashley and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will student attitudes towards science change when they are given a chance to explore an area of science in which they have indicated an interest? This action research thesis investigated this question over a period of nine weeks. The subjects of this study included twelve students enrolled in the same seventh grade physical science class. The school was located in a suburban setting in the Southeast United States. Data for this study was collected with anecdotal notes, participation grid, science attitude survey, student interviews, and student journals. This study found that when students are given the opportunity to pursue an area of science in which they demonstrate an interest, they are more likely to participate in their regular curriculum and increase positive attitudes' towards science. As a result of this increased engagement and improved attitudes' towards science, students academic performance in science also improved.

Book Secondary Student Perceptions of Science Classroom Environment and Attitudes towards Sciences

Download or read book Secondary Student Perceptions of Science Classroom Environment and Attitudes towards Sciences written by Leona A. Candia and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science education is important as it equips students with scientific knowledge that can enrich their everyday lives. It helps students to solve problems, learn to be rational as well as be critical in their thinking. However, science learning is deemed challenging as students see the subject as difficult and sometimes tedious to learn. Thus, interest in science is essential to ensure continuous learning in science. It is important to promote positive attitudes towards science among students. Positive attitudes towards science are associated with better achievement in science, increased cooperation as well as participation in class. Malaysia needs a generation who are creative and critical thinkers, thus it is vital to enhance students’ attitudes towards science. As students spend most of their time in a classroom, therefore, shaping students’ perceptions of science classroom environment is crucial in enhancing their attitudes towards science. This book is adapted and modified from a master’s degree thesis entitled: “Relationship between Form 4 Students’ Perceptions of Science Classroom Environment and Attitudes towards Science” of the first author. This book includes analysis of students’ perceptions of science classroom environment and attitudes towards science. This book attempts to answer questions regarding the level of students’ perceptions of science classroom environment, the level of students’ attitudes towards the effect of gender and school locations on students’ perceptions of science classroom environment and attitudes towards science, and the influence of perceptions of science classroom environment on students’ attitudes towards science. This book will be of interest to researchers in science education, especially, perceptions of science classroom environment and attitudes towards science.

Book The Science of Attitudes

Download or read book The Science of Attitudes written by Joel Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Attitudes is the first book to integrate classic and modern research in the field of attitudes at a scholarly level. Designed primarily for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, the presentation of research will also be useful for current scholars in all disciplines who are interested in how attitudes are formed and changed. The treatment of attitudes is both thorough and unique, taking a historical approach while simultaneously highlighting contemporary views and controversies. The book traces attitudes research from the inception of scientific study following World War II to the issues and methods of research that are prominent features of today’s research. Researchers in the field of attitudes will be particularly interested in classic and modern research on the organization, structure, strength and function of attitudes. Researchers in the field of persuasion will be particularly interested in work on attitude change focusing on propositional and associative learning, metacognition and dynamic theories of dissonance, balance and reactance. The book is designed to present the integration of the properties of the attitude with the dynamic considerations of attitude change. The Science of Attitudes is also the first book on attitudes to devote entire chapters to work on implicit measurements, resistance to persuasion, and social neuroscience.

Book The Effects of an Informal Science Education Setting on Students Attitudes Towards Learning Science

Download or read book The Effects of an Informal Science Education Setting on Students Attitudes Towards Learning Science written by Lauren Finley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal science education is becoming increasingly popular in today's classrooms, and for this reason, it is important to understand the effects of informal science education on students. In this study, the Children's Attitude Survey (Wulf, Mayhew, & Finkelstein, 2009) was used to measure the effects of informal science education on students' attitude toward science. Questionnaires were administered to two sample sets, and results indicated a slight decrease in attitude after participating in an informal science field trip. Continuing research in this area will provide more insight into why these effects were seen, and how informal science education can be best incorporated into the classroom.--P. 1.

Book Analyzing Students Attitudes Towards Science During Inquiry based Lessons

Download or read book Analyzing Students Attitudes Towards Science During Inquiry based Lessons written by Tracy C. Kostenbader and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Due to the logistics of guided-inquiry lesson, students learn to problem solve and develop critical thinking skills. This mixed-methods study analyzed the students' attitudes towards science during inquiry lessons. My quantitative results from a repeated measures survey showed no significant difference between student attitudes when taught with either structured-inquiry or guided-inquiry lessons. The qualitative results analyzed through a constant-comparative method did show that students generate positive interest, critical thinking and low level stress during guided-inquiry lessons. The qualitative research also gave insight into a teacher's transition to guided-inquiry. This study showed that with my students, their attitudes did not change during this transition according to the qualitative data however, the qualitative data did how high levels of excitement. The results imply that students like guided-inquiry laboratories, even though they require more work, just as much as they like traditional laboratories with less work and less opportunity for creativity.

Book Attitude Towards Science Learning

Download or read book Attitude Towards Science Learning written by Zubair Shah and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attitude towards science has been a focus of study for many educational researchers and it ultimately helps to explore the aspects that can be intervened to enhance the students' attitude towards science because a relationship has been reported between students' attitude and science achievement. The variation in results reported by studies regarding attitude towards science and science learning reflect that the demographic variables might have influential effect on attitudes towards science and science learning. The purpose of this study was to explore the Pakistani students' attitude towards science learning. A scale regarding attitude towards science learning (AtSL) with Cronbach's alpha 0.86 was administered to 1233 students of 37 government schools of three districts. The results of this study reflect that attitude towards science learning increases with increase in grade of the students; and female students had higher attitude towards science learning than male students. Paternal education, occupation and students' locality seems to causes no significant difference in attitudes towards science learning of students whereas maternal education and occupation cause significant difference in attitudes towards learning of science.

Book International Guide to Student Achievement

Download or read book International Guide to Student Achievement written by John Hattie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Guide to Student Achievement brings together and critically examines the major influences shaping student achievement today. There are many, often competing, claims about how to enhance student achievement, raising the questions of "What works?" and "What works best?" World-renowned bestselling authors, John Hattie and Eric M. Anderman have invited an international group of scholars to write brief, empirically-supported articles that examine predictors of academic achievement across a variety of topics and domains. Rather than telling people what to do in their schools and classrooms, this guide simply provides the first-ever compendium of research that summarizes what is known about the major influences shaping students’ academic achievement around the world. Readers can apply this knowledge base to their own school and classroom settings. The 150+ entries serve as intellectual building blocks to creatively mix into new or existing educational arrangements and aim for quick, easy reference. Chapter authors follow a common format that allows readers to more seamlessly compare and contrast information across entries, guiding readers to apply this knowledge to their own classrooms, their curriculums and teaching strategies, and their teacher training programs.
