Book excerpt: The 60th birthday of Peter Lax was celebrated at Berkeley by a conference entitled Wave Motion: theory, application and computation held at the mathematical Sciences Research Institute, June 9-12, 1986. Peter Lax has made profound and essential contributions to the topics described by the title of the conference, and has also contributed in important ways to many other mathematical subjects, and as a result this conference volume dedicated to him includes research work on a variety of topics, not all clearly related to its title.

Book A Numerical Calculation of Two Dimensional Steady State Detonations by the Method of Characteristics

This book was released on 1965 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a method for finding the state of the detonation products for a plane detonation wave utilizing the two-dimensional steady-state hydrodynamics equations and the method of characteristics. It is shown that in those cases where the equation of state gives pressure along the adiabat as a function of density (only), the characteristic equations can be solved analytically in velocity space for the plane problem. A numerical method for the solution in coordinate space is then developed using the solution in velocity space in conjunction with the geometric relationship between characteristic curves in the two spaces. In this manner the difficulty encountered due to the coincidence of the detonation front and two characteristic curves in coordinate space is overcome. The derivations involved are included as appendices. The body of the paper describes the application of the technique for an ideal gas equation of state and for an equation of state developed by Mark Wilkins (UCRL-7797). A further application is described in which this solution is used to start a solution for a steady state detonation in cylindrical geometry. The results are reported for PBX 9404 in the form of graphs produced by the computing facilities on a cathode ray tube from the computer programs described.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Application of Front Tracking to Two Dimensional Curved Detonation Fronts 1. Introduction. The application of the method of front tracking to two dimensional fluid flows with curved detonation fronts is examined. We study as test problems two cases of cylindrically symmetric expanding detonation waves, namely a strong detonation and a CI detonation. These problems can be solved accurately using a one dimensional random choice computation with operator splitting. We find that the solutions to these problems using front tracking converge linearly to the random choice solutions and give satisfactory answers on moderately coarse grids. We thus conclude that front tracking is a valuable method for com. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to study multi-dimensional unstable detonation waves, a high order numerical scheme suitable for calculating the detailed transverse wave structures of multidimensional detonation waves was developed. The numerical algorithm uses a multi-domain approach so different numerical techniques can be applied for different components of detonation waves. The detonation waves are assumed to undergo an irreversible, unimolecular reaction A yields B. Several cases of unstable two dimensional detonation waves are simulated and detailed transverse wave interactions are documented. The numerical results show the importance of resolving the detonation front without excessive numerical viscosity in order to obtain the correct cellular patterns. Book Modeling Two dimensional Detonations with Detonation Shock Dynamics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any explosive device, the chemical reaction of the explosive takes place in a thin zone just behind the shock front. The finite size of the reaction zone is responsible for: the pressure generated by the explosive being less near the boundaries, for the detonation velocity being lower near a boundary than away from it, and for the detonation velocity being lower for a divergent wave than for a plane wave. In computer models that are used for engineering design calculations, the simplest treatment of the explosive reaction zone is to ignore it completely. Most explosive modeling is still done this way. The neglected effects are small when the reaction zone is very much smaller than the explosive's physical dimensions. When the ratio of the explosive's detonation reaction-zone length to a representative system dimension is of the order of 1/100, neglecting the reaction zone is not adequate. An obvious solution is to model the reaction zone in full detail. At present, there is not sufficient computer power to do so economically. Recently we have developed an alternative to this standard approach. By transforming the governing equations to the proper intrinsic-coordinate frame, we have simplified the analysis of the two-dimensional reaction-zone problem. When the radius of curvature of the detonation shock is large compared to the reaction-zone length, the calculation of the two-dimensional reaction zone can be reduced to a sequence of one-dimensional problems. 9 refs., 5 figs.

Book Shock Waves Science and Technology Library Vol 6

Download or read book Shock Waves Science and Technology Library Vol 6 written by F. Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, as a volume of the Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library, is primarily concerned with the fundamental theory of detonation physics in gaseous and condensed phase reactive media. The detonation process involves complex chemical reaction and fluid dynamics, accompanied by intricate effects of heat, light, electricity and magnetism - a contemporary research field that has found wide applications in propulsion and power, hazard prevention as well as military engineering. The seven extensive chapters contained in this volume are: - Chemical Equilibrium Detonation (S Bastea and LE Fried) - Steady One-Dimensional Detonations (A Higgins) - Detonation Instability (HD Ng and F Zhang) - Dynamic Parameters of Detonation (AA Vasiliev) - Multi-Scaled Cellular Detonation (D Desbordes and HN Presles) - Condensed Matter Detonation: Theory and Practice (C Tarver) - Theory of Detonation Shock Dynamics (JB Bdzil and DS Stewart) The chapters are thematically interrelated in a systematic descriptive approach, though, each chapter is self-contained and can be read independently from the others. It offers a timely reference of theoretical detonation physics for graduate students as well as professional scientists and engineers.
