Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative study examined the relationship between school climate, teacher self-efficacy, and teacher beliefs. Teachers at two middle schools in rural southern Virginia participated in the study. Middle school teachers were surveyed using the School Climate Index to collect information about teacher-perceived views on their school’s climate and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale to gather information about teacher self-efficacy. Pearson Product-Moment Correlations were used to measure the relationship between school climate and teacher self-efficacy as well as teacher self-efficacy and four teacher-perceived climate factors, including collegial leadership, teacher professionalism, academic press, and community engagement. Data analysis did not provide evidence of a significant relationship between school climate and teacher self-efficacy. A positive correlation, however, was found in the relationship between teacher self-efficacy and community engagement. Recommendations for future research include replicating this study in elementary and high schools as well as in schools with different demographics, populations, and accreditation statuses to determine generalizations about school climate and teacher self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: Educational research continues to show that teachers are leaving the field of education in large numbers for a variety of reasons. One documented reason for teacher attrition is job-related stress. This correlational, predictive study examined the relationships between the predictor variables of school climate (collaboration, decision-making, instructional innovation, school resources, and student relations) with the criterion variable of teacher stress among fourth- and fifth-grade public school teachers from across the United States. A convenience sample of 68 teachers participated in the study by completing the Revised School Level Environment Questionnaire (R-SLEQ), which measured school climate, and the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI), which measured teacher stress. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine if a significant predictive relationship exists between school climate and teacher stress. Data analysis revealed a significant relationship between school climate and teacher stress. Of the five school climate factors studied, decision-making was found to be the only significant predictor. Implications of the research included the need for districts and school leaders to cultivate a positive school climate and provide opportunities for teachers to be involved in school-based decision-making as a means to reduce teacher stress.

Abstract: The study examined longitudinal relationships among school climate, teacher efficacy, optimism, sleep quality and work engagement. On the basis of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory and Job Demand-Resources (JD-R) model, it was hypothesized that school climate, teacher efficacy, optimism and sleep quality were positively associated with work engagement. The present study was conducted among 141 Hong Kong secondary school teachers, who received the same set of self-report questionnaire over a four-month time interval. Results of cross-lagged panel analysis yield non-significant cross-lagged relationships among the variables. However, results of multiple linear regression analysis identified teacher efficacy and optimism as significant predictors of teachers' work engagement. The findings provide partial support to the generalization of JD-R model to the Hong Kong teaching profession that teacher efficacy and optimism were found to be profession-specific personal resources that are positively associated with teachers' work engagement. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to determine if school climate (SC) factors can accurately predict teachers' self-efficacy (TSE) in Oregon public schools. Using social cognitive theory and ecological systems theory as theoretical frameworks for this study, the importance of this research includes, adding Oregon data to the body of knowledge, narrowing the research gap, and a better understanding of SC and TSE that may be applied to improving a school’s climate, school planning, increasing TSE, and retaining teachers. The sample for this study were Oregon public school teachers, 69 of which participated in the study. Two instrumentations were used to collect data, School Climate Index and Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale surveys. The instrumentations were distributed to the teachers by the districts’ superintendents using email. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the collected data. Although SC factors’ collegial leadership, teacher professionalism, and academic press were not significantly correlated to TSE, community engagement was significantly correlated. The statistics show that together, the combined SC factors were significantly correlated to TSE. In conclusion, this study replicated previous studies examining the relationship between SC and TSE and that more research is needed to narrow the research gap. Limitations to this study include improving sample size and diversity. A few recommendations for future research are replicating this study in another state, using different instruments, and examining a reverse relationship to see if SC can be predicted by TSE factors.

Book excerpt: This research study was conducted to determine whether teachers' perceptions of climate within a school had a significant influence on the dimensions that support a community of professional learners. Teachers from ten middle schools in one central Florida school district completed a combined survey design which included questions pertaining to both climate characteristics and Professional Learning Community (PLC) dimensions. Foundational theories regarding both learning organizations and organizational climate were explored. Recent research on the development of professional learning communities and school climate was also examined. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed to investigate each research question; these statistics included Spearman rho correlations, multiple regressions, and chi-square analyses. Findings demonstrated that the null hypotheses were rejected or partially rejected for each research question. Significant relationships were found between teachers' perceptions of school climate and the dimensions of a PLC. Of the demographic variables, only years of teaching experience was found to be not significantly related to the school climate dimensions. The implications of these results validate the importance of building a climate of supportive principal behavior and committed and collegial teacher behaviors, as demonstrated by the significant relationship of these characteristics to schools exhibiting higher degrees of the dimensions that constitute a PLC. Educational stakeholders wishing to develop schools into job-embedded communities of learners with evidence of the five dimensions (shared leadership, shared vision, collective creativity, peer review and supportive conditions) must attend to developing the climate behaviors necessary for that to occur. As demonstrated by the research results, establishing an appropriate school climate that promotes professional interaction, support, and teacher commitment to students is a strong place to begin.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Rigorous school accountability efforts in education have increased interest in factors that may contribute to positive learning environments for all participants in the educational process. The primary concept of interest of this study was that of collective efficacy, a mechanism of personal agency, espoused by Albert Bandura through Social Cognitive Theory. Collective efficacy, is defined as "a group's shared belief in its conjoint capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given levels of attainments" (Bandura, 1997, p. 477). Teacher's perceptions of school environments and school leadership were explored relative to collective efficacy. Bandura (1997) has suggested that each of these factors (school environments, school leadership, and collective efficacy) may have a positive impact upon the educational process, yet empirical relationships among the three factors are not evidenced in the literature. This study was conducted with K-12 elementary school teachers at 17 school sites, utilizing three instruments measuring each factor: collective efficacy, leadership, and school environment. Instruments were disseminated electronically. A significant relationship was found among the factors in combined analysis, although multiple regression analysis of independent influence was significant only with environment in relationship to collective efficacy

Book excerpt: Although a relationship between the constructs of teacher efficacy and school culture has been suggested in the literature (e.g., Beard, Hoy, & Hoy, 2010; Deemer, 2004; Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001), no studies have actually examined the relationship directly. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship among the components of school culture and the factors of teachers' sense of efficacy. The perceptions of Michigan middle school teachers (n = 387) were obtained using an online survey via random cluster sampling. The survey included a professional demographic survey, the School Culture Survey (SCS) (Saphier & King, 1985 as modified by Edwards, Green & Lyons, 1996), and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). Correlations were used to examine the relationships among the TSES factors (Efficacy in Student Engagement, Instructional Strategies, and Classroom Management) and the SCS factors (Teacher Professionalism and Goal Setting, Professional Treatment by Administration, and Teacher Collaboration). The study showed weak significant positive relationships between SCS and TSES in 13 of the 16 correlations conducted. All of the relationships determined in the study were found to have small effect sizes. The greatest correlation values occurred between the SCS factors and teacher efficacy in student engagement. In addition, the SCS factor of professional treatment by administration had the highest correlations with each of the factors of TSES. Finally, teacher efficacy in classroom management did not have significant relationships with two of the three SCS factors or the SCS composite scores.
