Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Prose Fiction, Vol. 1 HE value of Dunlop's History of Fiction, now again, after a long lapse of years, placed within reach of the English reader, needs no demonstration it is amply attested by the numerous quotations from and references to it in all works, even of the most recent date, upon the history of imaginative literature. The explorations in the field of the genesis and genealogy of fiction have, indeed, recently attained such extensive development that pro bably no single writer could now be found bold enough to review such a vast domain as forms the scope of Dunlop's undertaking. Book Prose Fiction An Introduction to the Semiotics of Narrative

Download or read book Prose Fiction An Introduction to the Semiotics of Narrative written by Ignasi Ribó and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise and highly accessible textbook outlines the principles and techniques of storytelling. It is intended as a high-school and college-level introduction to the central concepts of narrative theory – concepts that will aid students in developing their competence not only in analysing and interpreting short stories and novels, but also in writing them. This textbook prioritises clarity over intricacy of theory, equipping its readers with the necessary tools to embark on further study of literature, literary theory and creative writing. Building on a ‘semiotic model of narrative,’ it is structured around the key elements of narratological theory, with chapters on plot, setting, characterisation, and narration, as well as on language and theme – elements which are underrepresented in existing textbooks on narrative theory. The chapter on language constitutes essential reading for those students unfamiliar with rhetoric, while the chapter on theme draws together significant perspectives from contemporary critical theory (including feminism and postcolonialism). This textbook is engaging and easily navigable, with key concepts highlighted and clearly explained, both in the text and in a full glossary located at the end of the book. Throughout the textbook the reader is aided by diagrams, images, quotes from prominent theorists, and instructive examples from classical and popular short stories and novels (such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Franz Kafka’s ‘The Metamorphosis,’ J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, or Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, amongst many others). Prose Fiction: An Introduction to the Semiotics of Narrative can either be incorporated as the main textbook into a wider syllabus on narrative theory and creative writing, or it can be used as a supplementary reference book for readers interested in narrative fiction. The textbook is a must-read for beginning students of narratology, especially those with no or limited prior experience in this area. It is of especial relevance to English and Humanities major students in Asia, for whom it was conceived and written.

This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Masterpieces of Short Prose Fiction When we try to present narrative form of composition to the young student endeavoring to write and brought up on cheap magazines, we do not find that this evolutionary study reaches them. These stories seem to them remote and skele ton tales, not suggesting any immediacy of experience or of imagination. Moreover, they may justly maintain that the plot of Ruth and Naomi, or of Ruth and Boas, is properly a novel plot, demanding the complication of incident which would complete the framework of the story and set it apart from the true short story. Book A Study of the Types of Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of the Types of Literature Classic Reprint written by Mabel Irene Rich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Types of Literature The chronological method of arrangement has been followed. Each type has been traced from its earliest appearance to the pres ent time, and those that have come to be regarded as the best exam ples of each form have been especially noted, and, Wherever pos sible, studied. Some of these, however, have been omitted here be cause they are usually emphasized in earlier years of the high School course, and others, because they are not suitable for high school study. The chronological tables given in the back of the book will be of value in keeping before the pupil the time sequence so that the types will not become detached in his mind from their literary periods. It has been deemed wise to include everything essential to the course in this one volume, with the exception of the material for outside readings, and the text of The Tale of Two Cities, full notes of which, however, are given. It is hoped that this wide choice of material, as well as the very full lists for outside readings in connection with each type, will make the book very adaptable and useful for the needs of experienced teachers even though they may, perhaps, wish to make some additions or substitutions for the selections used. It is also hoped that it will prove of especial value to inexperienced teachers, to those who have small library facilities, and to students who must economize in the cost of a course. Should there not be time to read in class all of the selections given here, some of this work could be assigned for outside readings. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative English Prose and Prose Writers The present volume is offered as a contribution to the study of English Prose in its representative Historical Periods, in its representative Literary Forms and in some of its Representative Authors. That portion Of our prose is especially discussed that dates its beginning from the reign of Elizabeth in the writings of Bacon and Hooker and extends to the present decade in the pages Of Carlyle. This is English Prose Proper. As we advance, careful attention will be given to the discussion Of English Prose Style as visibly expressed in a few Of our prominent prose writers. The work will be literary, throughout, in its method, subject matter, and purpose, as distinct from that order of treatment that might be termed technical or speculative. A detailed account Of the life and times of the separateauthors examined will thus be aside from our main design, such allusions being made onlv in so far as they serve to cast light on the particular author's work as an author. Book excerpt: A Study of Poetry Bliss Perry While I hope that the book may attract the traditional "general reader," I have also tried to arrange it in such a fashion that it may be utilized in the classroom. I have therefore ventured, in the Notes and Illustrations and Appendix, to suggest some methods and material for the use of students. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Without the Novel

Download or read book Without the Novel written by Scott Black and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No genre manifests the pleasure of reading—and its power to consume and enchant—more than romance. In suspending the category of the novel to rethink the way prose fiction works, Without the Novel demonstrates what literary history looks like from the perspective of such readerly excesses and adventures. Rejecting the assumption that novelistic realism is the most significant tendency in the history of prose fiction, Black asks three intertwined questions: What is fiction without the novel? What is literary history without the novel? What is reading without the novel? In answer, this study draws on the neglected genre of romance to reintegrate eighteenth-century British fiction with its classical and Continental counterparts. Black addresses works of prose fiction that self-consciously experiment with the formal structures and readerly affordances of romance: Heliodorus’s Ethiopian Story, Cervantes’s Don Quixote, Fielding’s Tom Jones, Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, and Burney’s The Wanderer. Each text presents itself as a secondary, satiric adaptation of anachronistic and alien narratives, but in revising foreign stories each text also relays them. The recursive reading that these works portray and demand makes each a self-reflexive parable of romance itself. Ultimately, Without the Novel writes a wider, weirder history of fiction organized by the recurrences of romance and informed by the pleasures of reading that define the genre.

Book Rhetoric and the Study of Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rhetoric and the Study of Literature Classic Reprint written by Alfred M. Hitchcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric and the Study of Literature This volume, designed for use in the last two years of the secondary school course, contains such textbook matter as I think is needed to carry out these three ideas in an economical way: a brief review of rhetoric, including a little vocabulary of terms commonly employed in talking about books; a general classification and discussion of the various literary forms - fiction, drama, essay, etc. - to gether with suggestions both general and specific concern ing how these forms may be studied; a summary by periods of English literature, containing what I think is the minimum that the pupil should know upon graduation such information as an intelligent man or woman surely ought to possess. I have not hesitated to include, in revised form, some matter that has already appeared in an earlier manual; but the exercises and questions, which form a considerable part of the whole, are new - new and yet old, for little has gone into this book that has not been tried out repeatedly in class room. Indeed I have neither the courage nor the inclination to put forth in textbook form anything experimental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of English Literature Each chapter marks a chronological advance on the preceding chapter, except in the last book. There, for reasons suggested in the text, the three chapters deal with three separate departments of the literature of a single period - prose, the novel, and poetry. The titles of the various books and chapters are in harmony With the pur pose to make the volume a discussion of literature and literary movements rather than of general English history. Various helps to more extended study are given in an Appendix, where they may be easily referred to in con nection with the treatment of each period, but where they will not interfere with the continuous reading of the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing English Prose In order better to understand the nature of the study of formal English composition, let us give a brief account of the medium of writing in English, and of certain general conditions that accompany the act. Many of these are common, as will appear, to writing in all languages, and also to speaking. On them all sensible study of English composi tion must be based; you cannot get away from them; and any theory of writing that tried to avoid them would be wild and useless.
