Based upon Maslow's theory of basic needs, it was believed that individuals who feel insecure about science or science teaching cannot function at a higher need level until these insecurities are met. A 20-item instrument was used to determine an individual's self-estimated proficiency in science (SEPS), the main independent variable. Half of the students with low SEPS and half with high SEPS took a "traditional" methods course which emphasized basic competencies in teaching physical science. The other half of each group took a "humanistic" methods course which emphasized self actualization. It was hypothesized that the traditional course would best suit students with low SEPS and the humanistic course would be better for those with high SEPS. Two other independent variables included 1) actual proficiency in science (APS) as determined by an achievement test in high school physics and chemistry and 2) sex. Instruments designed to measure absolute and relative levels of anxiety specific to the teaching of science (ASTS, RATS) were administered. Findings indicate that neither of the method courses was superior to the other, based upon ASTS and RATS scores. (DC)

It has, however, been pointed out that education of science teachers still needs much improvement. At the present, there is an emergent need to meet the shortage of qualified science teachers and at the same time to bring qualitative improvements in the courses offered in teacher education institutions. First, we recommend that the 1-year duration of teacher preparation is grossly inadequate for all teaching courses, and should be lengthened, and the qualifications for entrance be increased. We believe that teaching must be made a graduate profession. For example, the basic qualification of primary school teachers for admission to teacher education institution should be increased. We recommend that PTC should be made a 12 + 2 year program. Similarly, CT, 12 + 3; B. Ed. , 14 + 2; B. S. Ed. , 12 + 4; M. A. Ed. , 14 + 3; and M. Ed. one year after B. Ed. or B. S. Ed. Secondly, we think the quality of instruction in teacher preparation programs should be improved. Most teachers in the teacher preparation institutions use the lecture method most of the time. Prospective teachers behave like passive listeners to their teachers. They do not participate in the teaching/ learning process. Some instructors even dictate their notes to the preservice teachers. When the teachers join schools, they behave the same way.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine from elementary preservice teachers' perspectives their understanding of inquiry-based pedagogy and their confidence to teach science after concurrently completing a traditional elementary science education methods course and the associated science field experience. Results of this study indicate that when multiple inquiry-based experiences and instructional strategies, consistent with the National Science Education Standards, are integrated into a traditional elementary science methods course and reinforced through observations of classroom practice in the field, preservice teachers develop an understanding of scientific inquiry and inquiry based science instruction, develop an appreciation for the benefits of teaching and learning science in a constructivist environment, develop confidence to teach science and indicate intent to use inquiry-based science teaching strategies in their own classroom practice. Findings from this research study have implications for the design of the elementary education science methods course and its associated science field experience.

First, this study examined pre-service elementary teachers' scientific literacy levels. Second, this study examined pre-service elementary teachers' personal and subject-specific self-efficacy levels toward teaching science. Third, this study investigated the extent to which pre-service elementary teachers' scientific literacy levels and subject-specific self-efficacy levels are related. This study involved 49 pre-service elementary teachers (4 male and 45 female) registered in two science methods courses at a mid-sized university in the Midwestern United States. Data were collected using the Test of Basic Scientific Literacy (TBSL), the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument-Preservice (STEBI-B), and Beliefs About Teaching (BAT). Results show that the pre-service elementary teachers in both groups had a satisfactory level of scientific literacy. There was a significant difference in the score for personal self-efficacy and subject-specific self-efficacy among the participants in the advanced science methods course. Participants in the advanced science methods course had an existing relationship between scientific literacy and subject-specific self-efficacy in teaching science. These results have implications on teacher preparation programs and science education research. Specifically, this study provided an indication of the level of scientific literacy and self-efficacy of pre-service elementary teachers as an attempt to inform policy makers and educational researchers about how realistic they are in their perception related to the pre-service elementary teachers' skills to achieve the goals of science curriculum.
