Download or read book Female Secondary Schools Teachers Perceptions of Principals Leadership Style and Its Relationship with Their Organizational Commitment written by Hessa Ahmed Alshwia and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the Saudi educational policy are to ensure that education becomes more efficient to meet the religious, economic and social needs of the country, and to eradicate illiteracy among Saudi adults. These objectives can be achieved, with the availability of efficient and effective school principals endowed with superb leadership qualities so as to encourage and drive the teachers as well as other educational staff and ensure their commitment. Based on the mentioned fact, the present research embarks on this study with the aim of investigating the female principals of female secondary school's major leadership style in Dammam based on Kurt Lewin styles of leadership. Moreover, it aims to identify the level of teacher's organizational commitment from their perceptions and assess the relationship between principals' the three major leadership styles and teachers' organizational commitment. The quantitative method was used, where 351 questionnaires were distributed to the secondary school female teachers in Dammam district of Saudi Arabia. The findings from the study indicate that, the female teachers in Dammam were highly committed to their school due to the leadership styles that were used by their principals. The three leadership styles that were used by the principals were based on their traits and the situations they found themselves. The key recommendation made by this research with regards to the practices of principals is that, effort should be made to train principals on effective leadership to enhance quality of education.

Book Applying Distributed and Transformational Leadership Theories to Increase Opportunities for Women in Senior Educational Leadership in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Applying Distributed and Transformational Leadership Theories to Increase Opportunities for Women in Senior Educational Leadership in Saudi Arabia written by Refah Aldawsari and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saudi Arabia, the lack of representation of women in senior educational leadership is a problem that continues to plague the quality of K-12 educations in girls' schools in the nation. In this paper, I will address the likely causes and outcomes of this issue and will suggest strategies for change that focus on the implementation of distributed and transformational theories of leadership to encourage renovation in Saudi girls' school curricula. This paper also analyzes and compares some aspects of the Saudi boys' and girls' K-12 curriculum and conducts a survey that will present current opinions of the roles women play in the Saudi Arabian educational environment. The most surprising and important finding of my survey was that the percentage of men who would accept women as leaders was higher than the percentage of men who would not accept women as leaders. This is contrary to what seen on a society and community level in Saudi Arabia.

Book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power

Download or read book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power written by Areej Abdullah Shafai and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid changes occurring in Saudi Arabia toward achieving Saudi's 2030 vision, more opportunities and developments will emerge in education and leadership, as one of the main orientations of the vision. The Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia seeks to raise the quality of higher education and its features to provide outputs that contribute to serving the community and economic development. Responding to the requirements of the labor market, the Ministry of Higher Education is seeking to make higher education in Saudi Arabia competitive with higher education systems in other developed countries. Thus, improving leadership in higher education institutions has become more essential than ever. This study explored the perceptions of higher education leaders on servant leadership as a leadership style. It also aimed to define their practices of authority and power as a significant pillar of servant leadership. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data for this study. Ten department chairs from various regions of Saudi Arabia were interviewed to gain their perspectives and stories regarding their practice of servant leadership. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed, then coded and analyzed with Dedoose web-based qualitative data-analysis software. The major findings from this study emerged around the five main themes that answered the five research questions: experience of leadership, characteristics of servant leadership, service, authority and power, and challenges of applying servant leadership in Saudi Arabia. One major finding of this study was that Saudi higher education leaders lack leadership education and training. They were unfamiliar with various leadership styles in general, and the term servant leadership in particular. Findings also demonstrated a tight link between servant leadership and Islamic principles, as Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) embraced the leadership approach that puts people and their needs as a top priority. The findings clearly indicated that Saudi higher education leaders use formal authority and still perceive formal authority as a major controlling element. Formal authority and moral authority complement each other. More importantly, servant leadership is an appropriate method of leadership to be applied in higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia. However, shifting from a traditional style of leadership that relies on authority to servant leadership needs to be gradual to reduce potential risks as a result of this significant transition.

Book Assessment and Evaluation of Leadership Roles in Sustaining Educational Reforms in Secondary Schools in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Download or read book Assessment and Evaluation of Leadership Roles in Sustaining Educational Reforms in Secondary Schools in the Kingdom of Bahrain written by Ali Khalifa Alsaad and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to assess and evaluate the role of leaders in sustaining educational reforms in public secondary schools in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Almost 500 participants participated in the current study to measure the effectives of twelve secondary schools principal's leadership role in correspondence with the (Goals, Pedagogy, Institutionalization, Leadership, Spread, Evidence, and Ownership) GPILSEO framework. The study measured leadership effectiveness through four independent variables: participant's position, experience, qualifications, gender, and schools level of performance. The study indicate that in general, school leaders were not practicing effective forms of distributed leadership and this limited the possibility of teaching staff from experiencing leadership roles which, in turn, influenced the sustainability of educational reforms negatively. Similarly, it was found that leaders were performing poorly in facilitating and transferring educational reform practices into the school, as most 'early career' teachers lacked guidance and understanding of educational practices due to lack of specific goals, while 'late career' teachers resisted educational reforms practices as they were perceived as a threat to initial practices. In addition, statistically significant gender and schools differences were found. With respect to gender, female leaders performed better than male leaders in transferring educational reform ownership to school teachers. The findings of the study also suggested that leaders of schools classed by the Bahraini school inspection authorities as "Satisfactory" performed better than leaders of schools classed as "inadequate", when implementing educational reforms. However, the study findings did not indicate any significant difference in the GIPLSEO framework elements between participant's qualification groups. This is explained to be due to the fact that participant's with different qualifications possessed similar positions and, thus, similar perceptions of leadership roles.

Book An Investigation Into the Perceptions Held by K12 Muslim Female Islamic School Teachers in the United States of School Leadership Practices and Their Effects on School Climate and School Efficacy

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Perceptions Held by K12 Muslim Female Islamic School Teachers in the United States of School Leadership Practices and Their Effects on School Climate and School Efficacy written by Sofia Tanweer Hussain and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dynamic era of change the educational landscape in North America offers parents a plethora of choices when it comes to educating their children. Muslim American parents are no exception to this phenomenon, specifically after the world was shaken on September 11th, 2001. Muslim professionals saw an opening in the market, and so Islamic schools proliferated through the country. A priori studies on Islamic schools have focused on the perceptions held by school leaders of the effects of their leadership style on school climate; the gap in literature has provided the impetus for this research. As such, this qualitative, Interpretative Phenomenological study uses servant leadership theory, school climate theory, and aligns these with Islamic leadership theory to create a lens, to describe the understandings and perceptions held by Islamic school teachers of their experiences with school leadership, and its perceived effects on school climate. The results from this study indicate a few salient and noteworthy points; first, the culture of nepotism in Islamic schools indicates that employees may not always be treated equally; next, teachers confirmed that their state of mind is what led to the positive climate that they experienced. Moreover, they reported a lack of transparency between leaders and stakeholders. A lack of cultural competency as well as a deficiency in academic proficiency regarding policy and curriculum meant that leaders were ill prepared to deal with common issues. Participants also reported the common use of religious guilt and most prominently, the implementation of a dictatorship under the guise of the Islamic shura Ideology, which promotes mutual consultation and honors the voice of subordinates. The findings of this study will provide Islamic school organizations with a foundation for assessing the role of principal leadership, specifically with regards to its effect on school climate. Furthermore, this research will enable schools to modify credentialing and continued professional development requirements for their principals, as well supporting ongoing research regarding leadership in Islamic schools. Cultural constraints make it challenging for many ethnic minority individuals (particularly women) to speak openly about disparities that they deal with on a daily basis; to some this is considered a form of disloyalty or treachery, to which end, this research will provide the stimulus for dialogue amongst Islamic school boards and teachers.

Book Leadership Styles in Lebanese Secondary Schools

Download or read book Leadership Styles in Lebanese Secondary Schools written by Najat Al Aramouny and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the new roles of principals—as managers, instructors and change or reform agents—as perceived and practiced by leaders in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries and the United States of America (USA), and as perceived and practiced by their counterparts in Lebanon. This study documented how principals performed their new roles by matching their self- perceived and perceived leadership management styles with their behaviors while working together with subject coordinators and teachers to implement the school vision in Lebanese secondary public and private schools. Therefore, the study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the roles of principals perceived as leaders, in Lebanese secondary schools (public and privare0 through the study of the principals use of the four leadership framework of Bolman and Deal (2006) – the four leadership styles and their corresponding behaviors—as self-perceived and the principals use of the four- leadership framework as perceived by subject coordinators and teachers. The results revealed that the principals perceived their main leadership management style as, firstly, human resources and, secondly, structural in the public and private Lebanese secondary sectors. There was no significant difference between the results in the public school sector and the private school sector. This research may direct future studies on school principals management styles and behaviors in their quest to reach the school vision. Recommendations were given.

Book The First Steps Toward Developing Leadership Programs for Women in the United Arab Emirates

Download or read book The First Steps Toward Developing Leadership Programs for Women in the United Arab Emirates written by Susan Madsen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing effective leaders has become one of the most critical challenges for many organizations today, as strong, competent leadership often separates high-performing, successful organizations from less effective ones. In many countries research is being conducted to assist practitioners in designing successful leadership development programs for both men and women. However, in some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), these efforts are only in their infancy, and leadership development for women is a new concept. Needless to say, there is no evidence of existing research on the development of women leaders in that country, and only a few indications that the development of leadership for women has even been addressed in past years. However, it seems that things may be changing (Al Qasimi, 2007; Khaleej Times, 2007), and with these emerging perceptional changes it is expected that there will be future opportunities for management practitioners to design and implement leadership development initiatives for Emirati women. To effectively design future leadership development programs to meet the developmental needs of Emirati women, research that explores the backgrounds and experiences of these women in learning environments can be helpful. In fact, the first step toward developing leadership programs for Emirati women is to understand the type of learning that transforms them. Learning that transforms individuals is learning that changes individuals. Since developing leadership is a transforming process, Mezirow's (1991) transformational learning theory provided a valuable theoretical lens to guide this research. As Merriam and Caffarella (1995) noted, "transformational learning theory is about change-dramatic, fundamental change in the way we see ourselves and the world in which we live" (p. 318). They explained that this kind of learning is more than merely adding to what we already know. Clark (1993) stated that "Transformational learning shapes people; they are different afterward, in ways both they and others can recognize" (p. 47). To begin understanding the learning and development of Emirati women, an online survey instrument was developed to explore perceptions of transformational learning at Abu Dhabi Women's College (ADWC) and to determine the influences that may affect these perceptions. The study explored three potential influences (influential individuals, learning assignments and activities, and outside college-related influences) on the transformation of students during college through the three core components of the transformational learning lens (mental construction of experience, critical reflection, and development and action) (MerriamandCaffarella, 1995). Two research questions guided this study: 1) To which extent do individuals, learning assignments and activities, and specific outside opportunities or activities influence the transformational learning perceptions and experiences of female college students in Abu Dhabi?; and 2) Can demographics predict transformational learning ? The survey instrument was created after a thorough review of the literature focused on transformational learning, transformative learning, and transformative education. Although there were many studies on transformational learning, only one researcher (King, 1998) used a quantitative instrument to collect data. I used her survey as the foundation for this survey, but substantial revisions and additions were made. The first section of the survey (18-items; 5-point scale, "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree") focused on student perceptions of transformational learning through exploring the three change categories: 1) perceptions of change in self and others, 2) thoughts and actions in considering and making changes, and 3) awareness of the benefits of change and predictions of their own future behaviors. The second and third sections of the instrument focused on reflection and learning influences, which served as independent variables for this study. The final section included seven intervening demographic variables: marital status, college major, prior education, years at the college, age, living location, and significant changes that have occurred during the past year (marriage, birth of children, move, divorce/separation, death of loved one, change jobs, loss of job, and new job). It is also important to note that the full survey was available for students in both English and Arabic. Of the approximately 750 ADWC students invited to participate in this online survey via face-to-face or email invitation, 294 responded and took the survey. Overall, students in this study perceived themselves as having gone through a transformational learning experience at ADWC during their years attending. Students appear to have significantly changed their opinions, expectations, and views because of their college experience. Their educational experiences have often caused them to reflect on their previous decisions or past behaviors and on how their studies impact them personally. Student participants also believe that influential individuals, learning assignments and activities, and outside influences have influenced the transformation they have made throughout their college career thus far. Although it was clear that each of the three components of transformational learning influenced each other, the regression analysis showed that none predicted perceptions of change or considering and making changes. Reflection was a predictor of two of the three transformation learning components. Interesting, learning assignments and activities is the only potential influence that predicted awareness and prediction of future behaviors. The independent variables explained close to 50% of the variance for two of the three transformational learning variables: 1) thoughts and actions in considering and making changes and 2) awareness of the benefits of change and predictions of their own future behaviors. Many findings provide insights helpful in offering numerous implications for designing leadership development programs for women UAE nationals. For example, these findings provide support that the inclusion of well designed reflective assignments and experiences can assist women in 1) understanding themselves and others, 2) thinking and acting differently, and 3) seeing how they can contribute to society, make a future impact or difference, and reach a new level of potential they now see in themselves. Although there are a number of limitations for this study, it provides a starting point to the exploration of how educators, scholars, and practitioners might assist in helping Emirati women develop leadership at least in college/university settings and possibly beyond.
