Book A Study of Pauline Interpretation of Jesus Ethical Sayings in Q and Its Significance in Today s Indian Context

Download or read book A Study of Pauline Interpretation of Jesus Ethical Sayings in Q and Its Significance in Today s Indian Context written by J. Stanly Jones and published by Paul and Jesus. This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme 'Jesus and Paul' is one of the classical topics of New Testament studies. Though Paul has shaped our impression of Jesus Christ, he says little about Jesus' sayings. However, in places where Paul makes use of Jesus' sayings, Paul interprets them in such a way that it fits into the new Sitz im Leben of the Christian community he writes to. This book aims to understand Paul as an interpreter of Jesus, so that it would help us to interpret the Bible in today's context.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book The Jesus Movement and Its Resistance to Oppressive Institutions

Download or read book The Jesus Movement and Its Resistance to Oppressive Institutions written by J. Stanly Jones and published by ISPCK. This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus as a miracle worker is an important aspect of Jesus’ identity in the gospels. It is impossible to speak authentically about Jesus without referring to his miracles, because miracles form an indispensable part of the earliest tradition about him. In the synoptic gospels, miracles are performed as actions of liberation against the oppressive social, religious, and political structures of the first century. Apart from healing individuals, Jesus employed healing as a strategy to challenge these structures which promoted distinctions and hierarchies. The healing strategy of Jesus was an alternative to the violent resistance of the Zealot movement and Sicarii, the isolation strategy of the Essenes and the Qumran community, and the individualistic way of the Cynics. Jesus’ healings were part of his non-violent resistance strategy in his assault on the structures of oppression. Miraculous healings occupied the same place in the Jesus movement just as the revolutionary actions in the resistance movement of the first century. These stories of healing were circulated and have survived repeated oral performance because they resonated with the hearers who were relieved from social maladies by listening to these stories. This book explores the resistance motifs found in the healing narratives of Mark’s Gospel thus reading the narratives as expressions of human protest. Reading the healing narratives as political and social actions, has implications for the Church and society today as much as it had for the first century audiences.

Download or read book Christ the End of the Law written by Robert Badenas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1987-03-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this close textual analysis Badenas uses the term 'telos' as his starting point to delve into a closer examination of the Greek-speaking ancient world. The study divides into three key sections: a history of exegesis, a lexical study of telos, and an exegetical study of Rom 10:4. This final part enables an in-depth analysis of the place and role of Rom 10:4 within Romans 9:11, and, in turn, of Romans 9:11 within Paul's argument more generally. In so doing, Badenas is able to offer a more informed judgement of the use of the statement 'Christ is the end of the law,' contributing insightfully to an abundance of material which proclaims the statement without acknowledgement of its greater context.

Book Matthew and Paul

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1984-03-08
  • ISBN : 9780521250931

Download or read book Matthew and Paul written by Roger Mohrlang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the basic structures of Matthew's and Paul's ethics, rather than to deal in detail with their teaching on specific moral issues. Dr Mohrlang discusses their perspectives under the five headings of 'law', 'reward and punishment', 'relationship to Christ and the role of grace', 'love', and 'inner forces', and gives special attention to the question of ethical motivation. There is no absolute contrast, however, since elements both of law and of grace are found in both writers, and for both it is their understanding of Christ that is decisive. The comparison is highly illuminating, and serves to throw into clear relief the more striking characteristics of each writer's ethical system. It should prove of considerable value to students both of New Testament ethics and of Matthean and Pauline theology and to those interested in the larger question of unity and diversity in the New Testament as a whole.
