Book excerpt: The overall goals of this research were to identify the major human factors problems in the mass transit driver cockpit, to identify the operational activities, and vehicle components that are most likely to produce accidents and injuries and to investigate, through an in-depth study, the most hazardous human factors problems. A review of related literature set the stage for investigating potential hazards. The literature review included articles involving relevant design aspects of related vehicles such as trucks and automobiles along with research specifically focusing, on transit buses. Discussions with transit agency officials and a one day workshop with several transit related groups were employed to provide an awareness of the most pressing problems. Observational research techniques including driver interviews were then used to clarify the problems, and workers' compensation files were analyzed to gather quantitative information on driver injuries. A thorough analysis of the data collected from driver interviews and analysis of the data collected from driver interviews and workers' compensation reports pointed out two major classes of injuries injuries related to the seat and injuries related to vehicle steering. The problems involved both the seat itself - its mechanical strength and durability, and the relationship of the seat to other vehicle controls-particularly the steering wheel and foot pedals. An anthropometric study of three transit bus cockpits indicated that some driver injuries could be reduced or eliminated by improving the relationship between the driver's seat and the vehicle controls. Specifically, the driver's seat. could have a wider range of adjustments and the pedal controls could be moved further forward from the steering wheel.

Book excerpt: "In an attempt to discover some of the less obvious or hidden causes of these accidents and to suggest appropriate corrective measures, a research project was initiated in the field of highway transport safety at the Harvard School of Public Health in the fall of 1949. Primary emphasis was to be placed on the role of human factors in the prevention of accidents. When the project was begun it was apparent that accidents were caused by a combination of circumstances which involved the drivers, their equipment, and the operating conditions on the highways. This implied that a team of scientists, with specialized training in the fields of safety engineering, psychology, physiology, anthropology, and preventive medicine should participate in the study. Such an interdisciplinary approach is characteristic of schools of public health, and the one at Harvard seemed to be a particularly appropriate place for a program of this type. Extensive study and research, as applied to aviation and other industrial fields, had already been carried out in its Department of Industrial Hygiene. Here also were to be found the various academic disciplines necessary to the solution of the broad problems influencing health and safety in highway transportation. In this research program which has been undertaken in the field of highway transport safety, four separate studies have now been completed. The subject matter of the present, or third, study has been divided into five major areas as indicated in the following Table of Contents. The introductory section, Part I, gives a brief outline of the importance of accidents in general, and of highway accidents in particular. The various approaches for the reduction of accidents in the truck and bus industries are also presented. The following four parts of the report relate to: Part Il. The Selection of Drivers, Part Ill. Human Maintenance, Part IV. Human Factors in the Design of Equipment, and Part V. Operating Procedures and Accidents. The original research findings from this investigation on highway transport safety have been integrated with previously published studies throughout the report. A selected bibliography is given at the end of each chapter for reference purposes. A glossary of terms frequently used in the highway transport industry and in the biological sciences, as well as a general topical index, are included at the end of the report."--Preface

Book excerpt: The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Program is a cooperative effort by government, private industry, and academia to apply advanced technology to the task of resolving the problems of surface transportation. The objective is to improve travel efficiency and mobility, enhance safety, conserve energy, provide economic benefits, and protect the environment. The current demand for mobility has exceeded the available capacity of the roadway system. Because the highway system cannot be expanded, except in minor ways, the available capacity must be used more efficiently to handle the increased demand. ITS applies advanced information processing, communication, sensing, and computer control technologies to the problems of surface transportation. Considerable research and development efforts will be required to produce these new technologies and to convert technologies developed in the defense and space programs to solve surface transportation problems. ITS has been subdivided into six interlocking technology areas. This book addresses human factors concerns for four of these areas: * Advanced Traveler Information Systems are a variety of systems that provide real time, in-vehicle information to drivers regarding navigation and route guidance, motorist services, roadway signing, and hazard warnings. * Advanced Vehicle Control Systems refer to systems that aid drivers in controlling their vehicle particularly in emergency situations and ultimately taking over some or all of the driving tasks. * Commercial Vehicle Operations address the application of ITS technologies to the special needs of commercial roadway vehicles including automated vehicle identification, location, weigh-in-motion, clearance sensing, and record keeping. * Advanced Traffic Management Systems monitor, control and manage traffic on streets and highways to reduce congestion using vehicle route diversion, automated signal timing, changeable message signs, and priority control systems. Two technical areas are not specifically addressed in individual chapters, but many aspects of them are covered in associated chapters: * Advanced Rural Transportation Systems include systems that apply ITS technologies to the special needs of rural systems and include emergency notification and response, vehicle location, and traveler information. * Advanced Public Transportation Systems enhance the effectiveness, attractiveness and economics of public transportation and include fleet management, automated fare collection, and real-time information systems.
