Book excerpt: Long hidden in the shadows of Jan van Eyck and Roger van der Weyden, Petrus Christus was one of the crucial painters active in the complex development of Flemish painting during a period of remarkable vitality and attainment. In Bruges, as elsewhere in the fifteenth century, the majestic spirit of high gothic Europe gave way to a humbler world of individual experience. Joel Upton defines Christus's own artistic contribution by showing it to be clearly distinct form that of either Jan or Roger. From the time of Jan van Eyck's death in 1441 to the arrival of Hans Memling in 1465, Christus was the only panel painter who lived in Bruges whose oeuvre is known. His art provides a singular record of the changing relationship of painter, painting, and patron at the very center of Flemish art. Upton contends that Christus's art marks an important stage in the evolution of values from the objective or moral collectivism of the thirteenth century to a more subjective, intensely personal, moral individualism of the latter part of the fifteenth century. While Upton acknowledges the acclaimed virtuosity of Jan and Roger in the portrayal of religious truths through compelling physical and emotional specificity, he argues that they preserve a conceptual distance between the image and the beholder that Christus deliberately closed. Christus's own paintings, therefore, stand out because of their unique accommodation to and transformation of the artistic world in which he lived. Petrus Christus is more than a study of a single painter. It reveals how, by visually shaping their experience, Flemish artists individually as well as collectively informed the infinite condition of our shared experience.

For the Romantics of the nineteenth century, he ranked even above Jan van Eyck as the greatest of the Flemish primitives. By the middle of the twentieth century, however, his exalted reputation had declined sharply under the shadow of his presumed teacher, Rogier van der Weyden. In 1953, Panofsky labelled Memling a major minor master, leading subsequent writers to consider him unworthy of serious study. It was only in 1994, the five-hundredth anniversary of his death, that the major exhibition on Memling in Bruges launched a veritable flood of publications on his life and work, finally granting him the recognition he deserves.This book contributes to the ongoing reappraisal of Memling by addressing some of the tantalizing problems that remain unresolved despite much recent study of his work. Beginning with the question of his training, the text follows him on his Wanderjahre from his native Germany to Bruges, where he became a citizen in 1465. Book excerpt: The fourth volume examines all the works attributed to masters with provisional names from the 1470s to the first half of the 16th century (Master of the Joseph Sequence, Master of the Magdalen Legend, Master of the Orsoy Altarpiece, Master of the Saint Barbara Legend, Master of the Saint Catherine Legend, Master of the Saint Lucy Legend, Master of the Saint Ursula Legend, Master of the View of Saint-Gudule, Master of 1473). It was towards 1900 that anonymous works were first grouped, on the basis of stylistic affinities, around certain paintings presenting particular characteristics. Each group is attributed to an anonymous master named after the painting (the eponymous work) which forms the basis for this group. These ensembles serve to give direction to the work of art historians, in the hope of identifying these anonymous painters at a later date. Some of these groups, to which new works have been added over past decades, appear fairly heterogeneous, and merit critical reexamination in the light of modern analysis methods. Like the three previous volumes, it is published in English and abundantly illustrated with colour photographs of the investigated paintings, detail photographs and comparative material. Each of the nineteen paintings has been submitted to exhaustive and detailed examination following a scientific research method which has been fully established over the years. This includes, on the one hand, examination of the supports and the original frames, dendrochronological analysis, infrared reflectography, stereomicroscopic observation, radiographic analysis, ultraviolet fluorescence imaging and, where possible, examination of paint samples and, on the other hand, historical, iconographic and stylistic analysis, dating, attribution and bibliography. Information is drawn from documents in the museum's archives and supplemented with material held at the Royal Institute for the Study and Conservation of Belgium's Artistic Heritage (IRPA/KIK) and the Centre for the Study of Fifteenth-Century Painting in the Southern Netherlands and the Principality of Liege. Each group of paintings attributed to a master with a provisional name is introduced with a short status quaestionis evoking the origins of the grouping and the principal publications relating to it. In their notices on the individual paintings, the authors have based their research on comparing them as closely as possible with the works around which each ensemble is grouped. Certain paintings in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are themselves eponymous works. In these cases the authors have made every effort to document these reference works as thoroughly as possible.

Book excerpt: This book is the first to explore the origins and nature of the demand for painting in Bruges over the course of the fifteenth century and its subsequent effect on the community of painters and their workshop and marketing practices. The evolution of Bruges was fundamentally linked with commerce, and as a result of the city's thriving international trade and rising merchant class, it was to become one of the most affluent and cosmopolitan centers in late medieval Europe. However, only after the Duke of Burgundy moved his court to Bruges in the early decades of the fifteenth century would it begin to be a major center for the production of panel painting. This study examines the coming together of the opulent Burgundian court, an affluent urban bourgeoisie, and an increasingly expanding community of painters, and the effects of this dynamic social configuration on the newly emerging art of oil painting. Specifically, Wilson argues that while the nobility were not particularly active as patrons of paintings, members of the urban patriciate who hoped to enter into the circle of the court were nevertheless influenced by the nobility's culture of display and found that paintings effectively served their needs for representations of their aspirations for social advancement. She further suggests that, in commissioning altarpieces for ecclesiastical interiors, patrons were also concerned to include their portraits and coats of arms in an effort to promote the status and prestige associated with their families. The demand for paintings was therefore to escalate throughout the fifteenth century, resulting in painters' increasing involvement in the reproduction of popular compositions and the eventual emergence of a mass market for their art.
