Book Intermediate Stage Densification in Vacuum Hot Pressing of Alumina

Download or read book Intermediate Stage Densification in Vacuum Hot Pressing of Alumina written by Ronald C. Rossi and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis was made of the densification kinetics preceding the final stage densification of alumina hot pressed in vacuum between 1150 and 1350C and between 2000 and 6000 psi. The analysis suggests a diffusional creep mechanism, possibly consistent with a Narbarro-Herring vacancy model. The measured activation energy, 116 kcal/mole, agrees with the activation energy for the final stage of densification and for the self-diffusion of aluminum ions in alumina. It is conjectured that the pore structure (i.e., open or closed) determines the stage of densification and further that pore structure has a profound effect on the apparent diffusion coefficients. Book Magnesia Alumina Beryllia Ceramics Fabrication Characterization and Properties

Download or read book Magnesia Alumina Beryllia Ceramics Fabrication Characterization and Properties written by Allen Alper and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Oxides, Magnesia, Alumina, Beryllia Ceramics: Fabrication, Characterization and Properties is the third part of a series of four books on high temperature oxides. This text is divided into five chapters that deal with the research and technical advances in selected refractory oxides, such as magnesia, alumina, and beryllium oxide. Chapter 1 discusses the preparation, characterization, thermal and mechanical properties, and application to the electrical and electronic fields of beryllium oxide. Chapter 2 examines the mechanical behavior of single crystals of magnesia, including its dislocation motion and interactions, and crack nucleation and growth. Chapter 3 describes the significance of diffusive and mechanical properties of sintered alumina and magnesia. Chapter 4 deals with the process mechanisms, control, and limitations of hot-pressing, with particular emphasis on the practical applications of hot-pressed refractory oxides. Chapter 5 explores the possible benefits of hot-working, operational processes involved in such working, and the applications of fabricated oxides. This book is of great value to engineers, materials scientists, and students with advanced materials science courses.

Book DEVELOPMENT OF REFRACTORY CERAMICS THAT CAN BE PROCESSED AT TEMPERATURES CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN THEIR MAXIMUM USE TEMPERATURE

Download or read book DEVELOPMENT OF REFRACTORY CERAMICS THAT CAN BE PROCESSED AT TEMPERATURES CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN THEIR MAXIMUM USE TEMPERATURE written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cordierite compositions were prepared utilizing the fritted composition as the basic raw mate rial. Density, moisture absorption, X-ray determinations, thermal expansion, and transverse strength results are shown. A study of the densification of six compositions in the alumina magnesia system was carried out in vacuum, dry hydrogen and dry helium. The compositions range from pure alumina at one end to a 2.0% magnesia content at the other end. Density and moisture absorptions are shown as a function of the composition and firing atmosphere.

Book Ceramic Microstructures

Download or read book Ceramic Microstructures written by Antoni P. Tomsia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Book Sintering Key Papers

Download or read book Sintering Key Papers written by S. Somiya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th International Symposium on the Science and Technology of Sintering was held on 4-6 November 1987 in Tokyo. Among the many technical sessions was one entitled 'Session for Sintering-Case Study'. Over 200 participants heard these invited talks. Although some papers were over 20 years old, it is necessary to understand the authors' way of thinking. Since the end of the Second World War, many excellent papers related to sintering have appeared in many different academic journals. Some of these papers are still of value, and are still being read by today's students. The questions we have to ask are: Why does the scholar think this way? Why did the scholar perform his experiments? What is the mechanism of sintering? What is the liquid phase of sintering? What is the behavior of sintering additives? What is the history and development of sintering theory? This book includes these sort of historical papers and also new original papers on sintering, all of which are very important to our understanding of the subject. Several papers have been added for this English edition, which is thus more comprehensive than its Japanese counterpart. These papers were spread out in many different sources and the benefits of collecting them together in book form is obvious.

Book A Working Model for the System Alumina Magnesia

Download or read book A Working Model for the System Alumina Magnesia written by Richard A. Reinhardt and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For treatment of internal explosions in the presence of both Mg and Al metals, it was necessary to devise a working model for the system magnesia-alumina. From the parameters of the model it was then possible to estimate equilibrium and internal-energy data for the various chemical species present in the oxide system, both in solid and liquid phases, for use in the blast computations. The solid phases, in agreement with published phase diagrams, consist of: a magnesia phase, in which a small amount of spinel (magnesium aluminate) dissolves; a spinel phase in which either magnesia or alumina is soluable to a considerable extent; and a pure alumina phase. The solid phases were treated by the methods of the thermodynamics of non-ideal solutions. The melt was assumed to contain chemically reasonable ions, plus unionized MgO, and to behave as an ideal solution. The parameters of the model were adjusted to give the most satisfactory fit to the known phase diagram. It is emphasized that the model does not purport to be an actual explanation of the structure of the system. (Author).
