Download or read book A Study of Agricultural Literacy of Eleventh Grade Students in Ohio Rural Schools written by Michael L. Gower and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the agricultural knowledge and perception toward agriculture of eleventh grade students in Ohio rural schools. The study further sought to determine differences in the level of agricultural knowledge and perception toward agriculture in the following groups: (a) students enrolled in agricultural education in schools with a secondary agricultural education program, (b) students not enrolled in agricultural education in schools with a secondary agricultural education program, and (c) students in schools without a secondary agricultural education program. Seventeen schools with a secondary agricultural education program and 15 schools without a secondary agricultural education program participated in the study. Responses were received from 716 students. The instrument used in the study was the Agricultural Awareness Instrument, which measured agricultural knowledge and perception toward agriculture of eleventh grade students. Internal consistency was calculated for the agricultural knowledge section (.90) and the perception toward agriculture section (.81).

Book Impact of Agricultural Literacy Efforts on Elementary Students Knowledge of Production Agriculture

Download or read book Impact of Agricultural Literacy Efforts on Elementary Students Knowledge of Production Agriculture written by Sarah E. Luthman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: As the agriculture industry continues to become more efficient and fewer individuals are directly involved in production, an increased number of people are misunderstood in food and fiber production systems. Educating the public about modern agricultural practices is important to the future of the industry. Agricultural literacy efforts in young children are especially effective. The goal of this study was to determine knowledge gained among elementary students regarding of Ohio's agricultural industry after participating in a one day agricultural literacy event: Farm Day. The objectives of the study were to describe the production agriculture knowledge of Farm Day participants prior to and after Farm Day; to describe the relationship between Farm Day participants' production agriculture knowledge prior to and after Farm Day by class, school and as an entire population of participating first grade students; and to describe the relationship between demographic characteristics including gender and background (farm or non-farm) of Farm Day participants' production agriculture knowledge prior to and after Farm Day. Education efforts were divided into eleven sessions on a variety of topics such as wildlife, agricultural products, and the pork industry. Identical pre- and post-tests containing one or two questions from each session were used to gather data. Pre- and post-test scores were compared to determine production agriculture knowledge gained. It was concluded that students' scores increased after participation in the agricultural literacy event. Interpretation of correlations found no strong correlations between gain scores and gender and/or students' backgrounds. Results of the study indicate that agricultural literacy efforts directed toward elementary students have a positive effect on students' understanding of production agriculture. Therefore efforts to educate the public about agriculture are effective, and it is recommended that such efforts be continued.

Book Pilot Study of Agricultural Literacy

Download or read book Pilot Study of Agricultural Literacy written by Robert J. Birkenholz and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study assessed the knowledge and perceptions of U.S. citizens regarding agriculture, food, and natural resources. Data were collected from 2,005 respondents representing the following groups: purposely selected primarily white Indiana high school students and primarily black Michigan high school students, randomly selected rural Missouri adults attending one of several town meetings, and randomly selected urban Missouri adults contacted in various settings (including churches, libraries, and grocery stores). Adults were more knowledgeable about agriculture than were high school students. Respondents were most knowledgeable and positive about natural resources and least knowledgeable and positive about agricultural policy. No differences among ethnic groups' perceptions of agriculture or between rural and urban Missouri adults' knowledge of agricultural concepts were discovered. The study recommendations included the following: integrating agricultural instruction throughout elementary and secondary school curricula, developing agricultural literacy instructional efforts targeting inner city minority students, broadcasting television agricultural literacy programs for adults in urban areas, and establishing a National Center for Agricultural Literacy to coordinate agricultural literacy efforts at a national level. (Appended are knowledge statement responses by group, 12 data charts, and the survey instrument. Contains 12 references and 20 tables. (Mn).

Book A Comparative Study of Agricultural Literacy of Urban Vs Rural 3rd and 4th Graders

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Agricultural Literacy of Urban Vs Rural 3rd and 4th Graders written by Leslie Marie Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural literacy is an important part of education in the United States. Public and policy maker understanding of agricultural and natural resources is a national research priority set forth by the American Association for Agricultural Education. The purpose of this study was to discover the level of agricultural literacy with third and fourth grade students in an urban area compared to students in a rural area before and after an agricultural program. Due to the ever increasing urban population students in today's world do not have the knowledge to be conversationally literate about agriculture. Agricultural programs have been put into place to help teach students about agriculture. This study employed a pretest and posttest, based upon the Food and Fiber Systems Literacy Framework, to determine if students were gaining agricultural knowledge through the Kids & Kows & More program. Data was compared to measure students' agricultural knowledge before and after the agricultural program. Overall, findings indicate that students do increase their knowledge from before to after an agricultural program. It was also found that urban students had a higher mean score on both the pretest and posttest. The study concluded that students involved in agricultural programs do increase their knowledge of agriculture through the teaching and experiential learning involved. Also, the study concluded that urban students have a higher level of agricultural literacy than rural students.

Book Assessment of Agricultural Literacy in Higher Education

Download or read book Assessment of Agricultural Literacy in Higher Education written by Peyton M. Gehrs and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human knowledge of the food and fiber systems affects nearly every facet of the society we live in. While this industry affects billions of lives daily, little research has been conducted to identify the level of knowledge on this industry in college age students. This replicated study was produced to evaluate and assess the agricultural knowledge and personal perception of the industry of undergraduate students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) in the Fall 2018 semester. Participants completed a 25-questionnaire food and fiber literacy test to assess their knowledge and 14 questions regarding personal characteristics and perceptions of the agricultural industry. The average score on the agricultural literacy test was an 18.23 out of 25 questions correct. College of Agricultural Sciences and College of Science scored the highest while College of Education and Human Services and College of Applied Sciences and Arts scores were among the lowest. Comparisons of student demographic information such as hometown size, organization participation and gender were conducted to determine correlation between specific groups and their agricultural literacy levels. Females slightly outscored males. Cities and Rural communities achieved the highest averages when comparing community sizes. Students who enrolled in agricultural education courses in high school seemed to score higher on the agricultural literacy test. A majority of respondents stated they strongly agree that agriculture is important to society; but when asked how knowledgeable they considered themselves to be in agriculture, an overwhelming amount of students responded below average. The results of this study found a hopeful advancement in agricultural literacy but also revealed possible influential factors in poor agricultural knowledge. It is recommended that such a study be continually conducted at Southern Illinois Universities and other institutions of higher education.
