Book excerpt: In the past decade, 3D statistical face model (3D Morphable Model) has received much attention by both the commercial and public sectors. It can be used for face modeling for photo-realistic personalized 3D avatars and for the application 2D face recognition technique in biometrics. This thesis describes how to achieve an automatic 3D face reconstruction system that could be helpful for building photo-realistic personalized 3D avatars and for 2D face recognition with pose variability. The first systems we propose Combined Active Shape Model for 2D frontal facial landmark location and its application in 2D frontal face recognition in degraded condition. The second proposal is 3D Active Shape Model (3D-ASM) algorithm which is presented to automatically locate facial landmarks from different views. The third contribution is to use biometric data (2D images and 3D scan ground truth) for quantitatively evaluating the 3D face reconstruction. Finally, we address the issue of automatic 2D face recognition across pose using 3D Morphable Model.

Book Face Recognition and Growth Prediction Using a 3D Morphable Face Model

Download or read book Face Recognition and Growth Prediction Using a 3D Morphable Face Model written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present two different techniques and applications that are based on the 3D Morphable Face Model. In the first part of this thesis, we develop a new top-down approach to 3D data analysis by fitting a 3D Morphable Face Model to 3D scans of faces. The algorithm is specifically designed for scans which were recorded in a perspective projection. In an analysis-by-synthesis approach, shape, texture, pose and illumination are optimized simultaneously. Starting from raw 3D scans, the algorithm determines a PCA-based representation which fits the scan best. Also, fragmentary surfaces are completed and correspondence to a reference face of the morphable model is established. Simultaneously, illumination conditions are estimated in an explicit simulation that involves specular and diffuse components. The effects of lighting and shading are removed to obtain an illumination corrected texture which stores the diffuse reflectance in each point of the facial surface. We use the algorithm as a core component in 3D face recognition on a subset of the FRGC database of scans. In part two of this thesis we explore the growth of 3D faces, represented in a 3D Morphable Face Model. Assuming that 3D faces follow curved trajectories in face space as they age, we present a novel algorithm that computes individual aging trajectories for given faces. From a database of 3D scans of teenagers and adults, we learn an non-linear function, that assigns an age to each face vector using support vector regression. Computing the gradient of this function leads us to trajectories that describe the direction of growth in face space. Starting from photographs of faces we apply the aging prediction to images of faces by reconstructing a 3D model from the input image and applying the aging transformation on both shape and texture. The resulting face model is rendered back into the same image or into images of other individuals at the appropriate ages, for example images of older children. Also we may com.

Book 3D Face Reconstruction and Emotion Analytics with Part based Morphable Models

Download or read book 3D Face Reconstruction and Emotion Analytics with Part based Morphable Models written by Hai Jin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the front and side are used to guide our Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) induced part-based face model to iteratively reconstruct an initial 3D face of the subject. Then, an iterative detail updating method is applied to the initial generated 3D face to reconstruct facial details through optimizing lighting parameters and local depths. Our iterative 3D face reconstruction method permits fully automatic registration of a part-based face representation to the acquired face data and the detailed 2D/3D features to build a high-quality 3D face model. The NMF part-based face representation learned from a 3D face database facilitates effective global and adaptive local detail data fitting alternatively. Our system is flexible and it allows users to conduct the capture in any uncontrolled environment. We demonstrate the capability of our method by allowing users to capture and reconstruct their 3D faces by themselves. Based on the 3D face model reconstruction, we can analyze the facial expression and the related emotion in 3D space. We present a novel approach to analyze the facial expressions from images and a quantitative information visualization scheme for exploring this type of visual data.

Book Face Detection and Modeling for Recognition

Download or read book Face Detection and Modeling for Recognition written by Rein-Lien Hsu and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face recognition has received substantial attention from researchers in biometrics, computer vision, pattern recognition, and cognitive psychology communities because of the increased attention being devoted to security, man-machine communication, content-based image retrieval, and image/video coding. We have proposed two automated recognition paradigms to advance face recognition technology. Three major tasks involved in face recognition systems are: (i) face detection, (ii) face modeling, and (iii) face matching. We have developed a face detection algorithm for color images in the presence of various lighting conditions as well as complex backgrounds. Our detection method first corrects the color bias by a lighting compensation technique that automatically estimates the parameters of reference white for color correction. We overcame the difficulty of detecting the low-luma and high-luma skin tones by applying a nonlinear transformation to the Y CbCr color space. Our method generates face candidates based on the spatial arrangement of detected skin patches. We constructed eye, mouth, and face boundary maps to verify each face candidate. Experimental results demonstrate successful detection of faces with different sizes, color, position, scale, orientation, 3D pose, and expression in several photo collections. 3D human face models augment the appearance-based face recognition approaches to assist face recognition under the illumination and head pose variations. For the two proposed recognition paradigms, we have designed two methods for modeling human faces based on (i) a generic 3D face model and an individual's facial measurements of shape and texture captured in the frontal view, and (ii) alignment of a semantic face graph, derived from a generic 3D face model, onto a frontal face image.

Book Efficient 3D face recognition based on PCA

Download or read book Efficient 3D face recognition based on PCA written by Yagnesh Parmar and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, Gujarat University, course: Electronics and communication, language: English, abstract: This thesis describes a face recognition system that overcomes the problem of changes in gesture and mimics in three-dimensional (3D) range images. Here, we propose a local variation detection and restoration method based on the two-dimensional (2D) principal component analysis (PCA). The depth map of a 3D facial image is first smoothed using median filter to minimize the local variation. The detected face shape is cropped & normalized to a standard image size of 101x101 pixels and the forefront nose point is selected to be the image center. Facial depthvalues are scaled between 0 and 255 for translation and scaling-invariant identification. The preprocessed face image is smoothed to minimize the local variations. The 2DPCA is applied to the resultant range data and the corresponding principal-(or eigen-) images are used as the characteristic feature vectors of the subject to find his/her identity in the database of pre-recorded faces. The system's performance is tested against the GavabDB facial databases. Experimental results show that the proposed method is able to identify subjects with different gesture and mimics in the presence of noise in their 3D facial image.
