Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Strange Discovery The narrative which it is my purpose now to put in written form, I have at vari ous times briefly or in part related to one and another of my intimate friends; but they all mistook my facts for fancies, and good-naturedly complimented me on my story-telling powers - which was certainly not flattering to my qualifications as an his torian. With this explanation, and this extenua tion of what some persons may think an inexcusable and almost criminal delay, I shall proceed. Book excerpt: In this early work of science fiction narrated by an Englishman in America on business, Doctors Bainbridge and Castleton discover that their patient is one Dirk Peters, a character from Edgar Allan Poe's novel The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym. Bainbridge recounts the story Peters tells, of his journey with Pym to a strange land at the South Pole. From a lake of boiling lava in Antarctica to lengthy discussions of Poe's "The Raven," this odd novelty of an adventure tale has something for anyone who appreciates Poe, Lovecraft, and classic literature. Little is known about 19th-century American writer CHARLES ROMYN DAKE, whose only published work is A Strange Discovery.

Book The Voyage of the Discovery Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Voyage of the Discovery Classic Reprint written by Robert Falcon Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voyage of the Discovery Strange as it may seem, the greater part of this story had been enacted before I realised that it would devolve on me to narrate it in book form. When first I saw vaguely this unwelcome task before me there was fresh in my mind not only the benefit which we had derived from studying the records of former Polar voyages, but the disappointment which we had sometimes suffered from the insufficient detail which they provided. It appeared to me in consequence that the first object in writing an account of a Polar voyage was the guidance of future voyagers; the first duty of the writer was to his successors. I have done my best to keep this object in view, and I give this explanation because I am conscious that it has led me into descriptive detail which will probably be tiresome to the ordinary reader. As, however, such matter is more or less massed into certain portions of the book, I take comfort from reflecting that the interested reader will have no difficulty in avoiding such parts as he may consider tedious. I have endeavoured to avoid the use of technicalities, but in all cases this has not been possible, as the English language is poor in words descriptive of conditions of ice and snow. I take the opportunity, therefore, of defining some technical words that I have used freely. Neve - the packed snow of a snow-field, an accumulation of minute ice crystals. This word is, of course, well known to mountaineers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Discovery of New Worlds

Download or read book A Discovery of New Worlds written by Bernard de Fontenelle and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this charming and witty dialogue translated by the first professional woman writer in English, a 17th century astronomer staying at the chateau of a beautiful Marchioness accompanies her into her garden at night and introduces her to the new discoveries of astronomy Although more than 300 years old, Fontenelle's dialogues in a garden over five nights are still a surprisingly painless way to learn about the sun, the moon, the planets, and the stars, even though new planets were later discovered and modern science has filled out many details Fontenelle could not have known. Only the confidence with which he discusses inhabitants of the planets, the moon, and even the sun is now seen as misplaced. This is no lecture, but a conversation with the cut and thrust of intelligent argument as the Marchioness challenges each of the astronomer's assertions and requires him to explain the evidence. Fontenelle's work has been through the hands of many different translators, but Aphra Behn's translation, one of the earliest, adds the feminine wit of a leading dramatist to the work, in the first modern edition of this translation.

Book excerpt: From the critically acclaimed author of In Darkling Wood comes a spine-tingling novel inspired by Frankenstein with more than a hint of mystery and suspense. One stormy June evening, five friends meet at Villa Diodati, the summer home of Lord Byron. After dinner is served, they challenge each other to tell ghost stories that will freeze the blood. But one of the guests--Mary Shelley--is stuck for a story to share. Then there's an unexpected knock at the front door. Collapsed on the doorstep is a girl with strange scars on her face. She has traveled a long way with her own tale to tell, and now they all must listen. Hers is no ordinary ghost story, though. What starts as a simple tale of village life soon turns to tragedy and the darkest, most dangerous of secrets. Sometimes the truth is far more terrifying than fiction . . . and the consequences are even more devastating. Praise for Emma Carroll's In Darkling Wood: "A haunting and poignant exploration of family, loss, and redemption." --Booklist, Starred "A tale brimming with emotion and atmosphere. . . . [In Darkling Wood] is absorbing and well written. Hand this to readers who enjoy fantasy, fairy tales, and magical realism."--School Library Journal, Starred "Magic and mystery adds appeal to this already compelling family drama...and Carroll manages to wrap all of the threads into a wholly satisfying ending."--Bulletin
