Download or read book Storytelling for Lawyers written by Philip N. Meyer and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good lawyers have an ability to tell stories. Whether they are arguing a murder case or a complex financial securities case, they can capably explain a chain of events to judges and juries so that they understand them. The best lawyers are also able to construct narratives that have an emotional impact on their intended audiences. But what is a narrative, and how can lawyers go about constructing one? How does one transform a cold presentation of facts into a seamless story that clearly and compellingly takes readers not only from point A to point B, but to points C, D, E, F, and G as well? In Storytelling for Lawyers, Phil Meyer explains how. He begins with a pragmatic theory of the narrative foundations of litigation practice and then applies it to a range of practical illustrative examples: briefs, judicial opinions and oral arguments. Intended for legal practitioners, teachers, law students, and even interdisciplinary academics, the book offers a basic yet comprehensive explanation of the central role of narrative in litigation. The book also offers a narrative tool kit that supplements the analytical skills traditionally emphasized in law school as well as practical tips for practicing attorneys that will help them craft their own legal stories.

Book New York Lawyer

Download or read book New York Lawyer written by Stephen H, Kaprelian and published by Lord & Haig. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s nearly one-third of middle management employees of Fortune 500 companies lost their jobs during the period known as "merger mania." I was one of them. Following a sixteen year career with one such company in Manhattan, at the age of 49, I found myself unemployed and "on the street" when mycompany was taken over by Wall Street sharks and broken up. I had been a salaried lawyer all my career but could not compete in that role given my salary expectations and competing with younger lawyers. When I went to work for the company, it was squarely in the middle of the Fortune 500 list . The circumstances causing it to end up as a candidate for bankruptcy and target for ravenous speculators is a story all to itself. The book tells how I got there, what happened on the way and how it all ended, all wrapped up in the glamour and excitement provided by the world’s most prominent venue: New York City.

A credible lawyer capable of telling a well-reasoned story that moves the listener will always beat the lawyer who cannot. This entertaining book shows you how to convey legal information in a cogent, persuasive way to the client who needs the help, to opposing counsel, and to the decision-maker who has to make the final call.

Book Lawyers Crossing Lines

Download or read book Lawyers Crossing Lines written by James L. Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers Crossing Lines is a collection of true stories about lawyers who broke the rules and ended up being sued for malpractice, disbarred, or prosecuted. The book is intended as supplemental reading for students in professional responsibility classes in American law schools. Casebooks in the field typically present edited versions of appellate decisions and excerpted materials which tend to be abstract. The stories in this book come directly from the courtroom -- from the trenches -- revealing the gritty realities of lawyers in trouble -- how they got there, and what happened to them. Each story is followed by comments and questions focusing on the issues raised. Each narrative was selected based on several criteria: whether it raises significant issues of legal ethics; whether it would lend itself to good classroom discussion; and whether there was an interesting story to be drawn from the trial record. The cases selected are recent; all were decided in the 1900s. The stories present a range of ethical dilemmas confronting lawyers in different areas of practice. For example, Chapter 1, A Liar for a Client tells the story of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's travails in representing a company whose officers turned out to be liars. The Case of the Frozen Broccoli describes the prosecution of two lawyers charged with racketeering in their representation of the Cali, Columbia cocaine cartel. Conflict-of-interest issues figure prominently in Breaking Up is Hard to Do and Of Chinese Walls and Comfort Zones. Although intended primarily for law students, the stories told make fascinating reading for anyone interested in questions of legal ethics.
