Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... ITINERARY SETTING forth from Rome we shall first proceed northerly over the rolling campagna and into the hills 140 kilometres to Orvieto, and from thence branch off in a north-easterly direction, 160 kilometres to Perugia. This lofty town should be made the centre from which to visit Assisi, 46 kilometres to the east, because the latter place does not possess a firstclass hostelry. From Perugia we start north-west up the Umbrian plain, stopping after 120 kilometres at steep Cortona, then going on in a more northerly direction 54 kilometres to Arezzo. If we are in a leisurely mood an agreeable side trip may be taken from Cortona by visiting Monte San Savino, 25 kilometres to the west, then 7 kilometres south to Lucignano, and lastly back 20 kilometres to Cortona. Siecina may also be visited, lying about 10 kilometres north-west from Arezzo. From Arezzo we drop down into the valley of the Arno, and follow the curve of this river 87 kilometres north-west to Florence. This city will be our headquarters for visiting San Miniato (one of its suburbs), the Certosa in the Val d'Ema, 5 kilometres distant, and Prato, 19 kilometres to the north-west. Leaving Florence we sweep off to the west 77 kilometres to Lucca, then down 22 kilometres to Pisa, and next 100 kilometres to Siena, lying south-east. From Siena one can go 85 kilometres south to Grosetto, but this trip is only mentioned and not advised. Siena lies 67 kilometres south of Florence and to go from Siena to Bologna (170 kilometres) we must pass through Florence on the way. This fact may influence some automobilists to retain Florence as a headquarters for visiting Lucca, Pisa, and Siena. If this be done it is possible to see the glass of Lucca and Pisa in one day, although it will make a...

Download or read book Stained Glass Tours in France Classic Reprint written by Charles Hitchcock Sherrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stained Glass Tours in France The purpose of this book is a very simple one. It is to provide an answer to the question, Where does one find good stained glass in France, and how can it most conveniently be seen All the books upon this subject are more or less technical and are in tended rather for the student than the Sightseer. Dur ing the Six years that the writer has been studying glass, he has so Often been asked the above question, as to finally conclude that an answer in the form of a Simple touring handbook might be of service. To that end he has put together notes taken on sundry vacation trips. The reader should be indulgent, for the writer is not an authority on glass - just a lawyer on a holiday. In addition to the purpose al ready described, it is hoped that this little book may also serve to lure forth into the charming French country some who have hitherto neither heard nor cared much about glass, SO that they may see the wonderful beauty that the stained-glass window can alone reveal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stained Glass: Of the Middle Ages in England and France The work of the countries and period I have chosen is of course the most important of all. There is beauty, it is true, in much Renaissance work (only a prig could resist the gaiety and charm of the windows of St. Vincent at Rouen), but it is for the most part beauty achieved in spite of, and not through, the material. There is beautiful mediaeval work in Germany and Italy, but the Germans, till the Renaissance, clung to a rather lifeless and archaic convention, and the Italians were hampered by their greater knowledge of painting. The art has found its noblest expression in the work of the great school which for nearly the whole of the Middle Ages was common to France and England. Download or read book Stained Glass Classic Reprint written by Lewis Foreman Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stained Glass Stained glass, as the term is used, is taken to include also painting upon glass. As a matter of fact, glass staining and glass painting are two quite different things. To build up a mosaic with pieces of coloured glass, each separate tint cut out of a separate sheet of potmetal, is one thing; to paint upon a sheet of white or coloured glass is another thing altogether. 'in fact, they are not merely two different ways but two opposite ways of arriving at a result. But there is this excuse for grouping them (as it is the custom to do) under one title, that from very early days the two processes of work were used together.
