Book A Squadron of the United States Navy on a Friendly Cruise Around Latin America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Squadron of the United States Navy on a Friendly Cruise Around Latin America Classic Reprint written by William Wallace Swinyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Squadron of the United States Navy, on a Friendly Cruise Around Latin America Each man of the United States squadron was so sincerely wel comed throughout Latin America that none of. Them, so far as I know, had a chance to see anything that did not appeal to his better nature. Therefore the writer is enabled to make mention of only the things that ennoble rather than of those that degrade. The southern portion of America undoubtedly has, just like the region up north, many disturbing elements to contend with; but, you may depend upon it, that it is strictly alert thereto. It is amazing how so many discordant. Elements can be held so severely in restraint as they are in most of the Latin American common wealths. The efficient manner in which United States sailors were everywhere shielded from petty annoyances pleased the lads. Her large spread of canvas more than made up for her greater size and weight, and it was clear that she was slowly overhauling him. So he changed his course again, this time to the west, having in mind a plan which he now proceeded to make known to two lads who stood near him on the quarter deck, and who were evidently his passengers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years and a Half in the American Navy, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising a Journal of a Cruise to England, in the Mediterranean, and in the Levant, on Board of the U. S. Frigate Constellation, in the Years 1829, 1830, and 1831 IT shall be my endeavour not to exhaust my read er's patience in the Preface, however heavily I may draw upon it in the work itself. It is so much the fashion now-a - days for writers of travels to apologise for their productions, by stating that they are less the result of volition, than a sort of irresistible inspiration, breathed into their spirits by the genii loci of the spots they have visited, that I should not, probably, be be lieved, if I should say that I joined the' Constellation without any intention of sporting my pen for the edifi cation of the public. As I do not wish to make my first - and probably my last - appearance before the world in the character of an author with an assertion at the outset that would occasion my veracity to be called in question, I shall make no such declaration albeit I might do it in good faith. My object, then, - to dash at once in medias res, ln applying for my situation, was twofold - the acqui sitiou of the languages of the South of Europe, and the sight of those glorious regions where Genius wan toned in her young and vernal hour. Being somewhat fond of scribbling, I inundated my friends with let ters, of which I was foolish enough to retain Copies, and kept, besides, a copious journal of notes and ob servations for my own improvement and diversion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ships Across the Sea: Stories of the American Navy in the Great War Among the twelve hundred men aboard the flag ship you could have found no more ardent champion of the holiday spirit than Henry Turnbull, boat swain's mate, who was commonly called Bugs. This surging enthusiasm was illogical and unexpected. It perplexed all hands. He was a slow, stubborn per son of few words and fewer friends, mild-mannered enough unless goaded too far, when the raw-boned frame and hairy fists were a persuasive argument. When off duty he was usually reading some book from the ship's library or picked up in a second-hand shop, scowling at the pages with earnest interest and muttering the words aloud. His faithful chum, his right bower, was unlike him, of course. The peppery, quick-witted Jim Cooney was all that a petty officer ought to be a brisk little man with a blue eye that bored like a gimlet. When he rasped out a command there was no dilly dallying. He bullied Bugs Turnbull outrageously, and their quarrels diverted the gun deck, but they had been inseparable through two enlistments.
