Download or read book Freedom of the Mind written by Joan Davis Ratteray and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free mind is the first step in the pursuit of liberty, but African Americans have been hampered in that pursuit by both the Eurocentric dominant culture and by the lack of consensus among blacks on the nature and goals of black education. Conflicting trends in the history of black education include the following: (1) opposing Eurocentric and Afrocentric definitions of the goals of black education; (2) attempts by European Americans to obliterate the African spirit and control the African American mind; (3) beginnings of an African American alternative vision of black education that goes beyond the non-academic, Eurocentric model; and (4) renewed efforts by some educators to reassert the Eurocentric educational tradition while others attempt to expand the earlier search for an African frame of reference. European Americans must examine the diverse history and cultural traditions that comprise the multicultural American identity, and acknowledge the contribution of African culture to the curriculum at all levels of education. African Americans must study the role of African culture in contemporary life, and establish Afrocentric criteria for scientifically measuring and evaluating academic excellence. A list of references is included. (FMW)

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This study explores the complexities in the lives of three young boys, seeking the learner's perspcetive in support of creating more learner-centered educative experiences. For a year, I followed the Torres boys--Hugo, nine-years-old, and his four-year-old twin brothers Paco and Pedro--at school, at home, and in a community-based ethnic dance group which their parents direct. This ethnographic study is based largely on observations of the children in the three settings, constructing portraits of the three boys that bring to life their personalities exuberance, strengths and struggles.

Book excerpt: Independent neighborhood schools are meeting the academic, social, and cultural needs of African American, Hispanic American, Latino American, Native American and Asian American children when viewed from a broad spectrum of criteria for individual and institutional success. Hundreds of these institutions provide full-time academic programs, usually in inner city areas. They are called "independent neighborhood schools" to distinguish them from more traditional private schools. These schools are a response to educational needs not being met by public school systems. This study attempts to fill the information gap about independent schools by focusing on a sample to show their environments and resources as pre-collegiate and pre-employment institutions. Of the 300 neighborhood schools identified, 82 schools (27%) responded to a survey. The 11,068 students in these schools in 1989 represented African American (89%), Hispanic (10%), and Native American (1%) ethnic groups. Neighborhood schools have generally adopted the prevailing curriculum content and textbooks, although most attempt to infuse relevant cultural values, and their students perform well by most measures. Alumni interviewed (n=50) tend to have positive attitudes and have continued their education or found employment. The book includes 15 bar graphs illustrating the findings and 29 tables of study data. Seventeen references are listed. (SLD)
