He/ she is incessantly engaged in what are known as economic pursuits or activities. These economic activities are so multifaceted, varied and complex that they constitute what is known as an economy. The main focus of the present study is to know the social and economic position of Muslim labours of Bhopal city. The Bhopal city is a Muslim dominated area where the Muslims living in the average standard are mostly engaged in labour works like motor mechanic, working in motor garages, running tea shops, and also labouring in other small scale manufacturer units. The study is conducted in 2012 using both primary and secondary data. Madhya Pradesh is largely agricultural with nearly 90% of the rural population employed in primary sector activities such as agriculture, mining and related fields. A majority of the farmers are small cultivators whose income over the years has been declining. Almost one-third of the state’s population lives below poverty line. The urban poverty is much higher when compared with that in rural areas. The survey data from Bhopal district suggest a much higher proportion of the population that could be declared as living in impoverished conditions as 96% of the urban dwellers of Madhya Pradesh live on less than Rs. 38.50 per day. In Bhopal 75% households have annual income below Rs. 25,000 and another 10 % having yearly income in the range of Rs. 25000-50,000. 85 % percent of the population manages its living with annual earnings below Rs. 50, 000

Unravelling the interplay of poverty, caste patriarchy and shifts in the gendered division of reproductive labour, it challenges both the ‘girl effect’ narrative as well as the ‘school/labour’ binary. It offers insights into ‘labour class’ families’ experience of urban informal work, enabling a critical account of the gendered place of school in children’s lives and rendering visible poor parents’ and pupils’ efforts to ensure educational success. Thick descriptions of pedagogic and disciplinary processes and social relations in the classroom allow it to grapple with teachers’ ‘deficit view’ of the labour class as well as the impact of stratified schooling on teachers’ working conditions and teacher-pupil relations. The book presents a rare account of teenaged children’s gendered modes of negotiation of social relations at school and home, waged and unwaged work, economic and educational deprivation and pedagogic practices in the classroom. Applying a multidisciplinary approach it explores, on the one hand, the discourse that provides religious legitimisation to social work activities and, on the other hand, case studies of practical fields of Islamic social work including educational programmes, family counselling, and resettlement of prisoners. Although in many cases, these activities are oriented towards Muslim clients, more often than not they go beyond the boundaries of Muslim communities to benefit society as a whole. Muslim actors are also starting to professionalise their services and to negotiate the ways in which they can become fully recognised service-providers within the welfare state. At a more general level, the volume also shows that in contrast to the widespread processes of secularisation of social work and its separation from religious communities, new types of activities are now emerging, which bring back to the public arena both an increased sensitivity to the religious identities of the beneficiaries and the religious motivations of the benefactors.
