Book The Atlas of Economic Complexity

Download or read book The Atlas of Economic Complexity written by Ricardo Hausmann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps capture data expressing the economic complexity of countries from Albania to Zimbabwe, offering current economic measures and as well as a guide to achieving prosperity Why do some countries grow and others do not? The authors of The Atlas of Economic Complexity offer readers an explanation based on "Economic Complexity," a measure of a society's productive knowledge. Prosperous societies are those that have the knowledge to make a larger variety of more complex products. The Atlas of Economic Complexity attempts to measure the amount of productive knowledge countries hold and how they can move to accumulate more of it by making more complex products. Through the graphical representation of the "Product Space," the authors are able to identify each country's "adjacent possible," or potential new products, making it easier to find paths to economic diversification and growth. In addition, they argue that a country's economic complexity and its position in the product space are better predictors of economic growth than many other well-known development indicators, including measures of competitiveness, governance, finance, and schooling. Using innovative visualizations, the book locates each country in the product space, provides complexity and growth potential rankings for 128 countries, and offers individual country pages with detailed information about a country's current capabilities and its diversification options. The maps and visualizations included in the Atlas can be used to find more viable paths to greater productive knowledge and prosperity.

Book Economic Reforms and Social Exclusion

Download or read book Economic Reforms and Social Exclusion written by K. S. Chalam and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Reforms and Social Exclusion is an analytical study that focuses on the socially marginalized and excluded groups in India since the onset of liberalization. It examines how the liberal economic reforms have impacted socio-economic categories—caste, tribe and religious minorities—subjecting them to further deprivation. Case studies of handloom weavers, VRS workers and the temperance movement have awarded this study empirical reality. The book also offers a refreshing approach to the study of economic reforms through philosophical and theoretical arguments on issues like civil society, religion, caste and alienation. Since most of the scholarly works on social exclusion are based on Western notions of 'deprivation' and 'exclusion', this work's unique focus on India lends the reader a context-specific understanding of the subject.

Book In Search of Prosperity

Download or read book In Search of Prosperity written by Dani Rodrik and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of growth has come a long way since it regained center stage for economists in the mid-1980s. Here for the first time is a series of country studies guided by that research. The thirteen essays, by leading economists, shed light on some of the most important growth puzzles of our time. How did China grow so rapidly despite the absence of full-fledged private property rights? What happened in India after the early 1980s to more than double its growth rate? How did Botswana and Mauritius avoid the problems that other countries in sub--Saharan Africa succumbed to? How did Indonesia manage to grow over three decades despite weak institutions and distorted microeconomic policies and why did it suffer such a collapse after 1997? What emerges from this collective effort is a deeper understanding of the centrality of institutions. Economies that have performed well over the long term owe their success not to geography or trade, but to institutions that have generated market-oriented incentives, protected property rights, and enabled stability. However, these narratives warn against a cookie-cutter approach to institution building. The contributors are Daron Acemoglu, Maite Careaga, Gregory Clark, J. Bradford DeLong, Georges de Menil, William Easterly, Ricardo Hausmann, Simon Johnson, Daniel Kaufmann, Massimo Mastruzzi, Ian W. McLean, Lant Pritchett, Yingyi Qian, James A. Robinson, Devesh Roy, Arvind Subramanian, Alan M. Taylor, Jonathan Temple, Barry R. Weingast, Susan Wolcott, and Diego Zavaleta.

Book Human Geography the economy

Download or read book Human Geography the economy written by Pradeep Sharma and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2007 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present title Encyclopaedia of Genetics is an exciting, and dynamic branch of science and offers the finest approach to teaching genetics through the integration of the molecular and chemical subdisciplines. It prepares the students to learn to formulate genetic hypothesis and apply critical thinking skill necessary for problem solving, while also gaining a sense of the social and historical context in which genetics has developed. This text also has a completely novel way to illustrate the one or two experiments in each chapter that are rigorously examined according to the scientific method. It starts with the premise that the syllabus for a university course in genetics should reflect the major research issues of the new millennium rather than those topics that were in vogue during the last decades of nineteenth century. The text covers both the basic and practical aspects of Genetics. Fundamental knowledge is developed within the context of applied relevance. Principles are supplemented with examples. This is done to maintain student interest, which is essential for learning any subject. Volume Details: 1. Genetic Material and Analysis; 2. Physical Basis of Inheritance; 3. Chemical Basis of Inheritance; 4. Origin and Evolution of Genetics; 5. Population Genetics.
