This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of South Australia for the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880 A glance at the accompanying map shows that, in spite of her name, South Australia occupies the central portion of the Australian Continent. Lying between 12 and 38 S. Lat., and 129 and 1410 E. Long. The colony extends from the Indian to the Southern Ocean, and is bounded on the east by Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria on the west by Western Australia. Roughly defined, her territory is miles long by 500 miles wide, and has an area of over square miles - about ten times that of Great Britain. With the exception of a small settlement on the northern coast (to which a separate chapter will be given) colonisation has hitherto been confined to an area of about a quarter of a million square miles, in the southern part of the colony; and it is consequently to this that the remarks made about South Australia in the following pages must be understood to apply. A portion of the colony still remains unexplored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Aboriginal Artists of the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Aboriginal Artists of the Nineteenth Century written by Andrew Sayers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Sayers examines a considerable body of drawings produced by Aboriginal artists between 1803 and 1903. Never before collected as a genre, these works are retained in museums, libraries, or private hands and have rarely been displayed. Often regarded as inauthentic art because of their stylistic borrowings and fluctuations, they enjoy a unique status as products of the interaction between Aboriginal society and the British colonizers. The largest group of drawings comes from the hands of three artists--Tommy McCrae (c1823-1901), William Barak (c1824-1903), and Ulladulla Mickey (c1820-1891), who produced their drawings in the 1880s and 1890s. Visually these drawings are varied, but they possess many of the aesthetic qualities which characterize contemporary Aboriginal art, displaying intense vitality and an acute understanding of flora and fauna.
