Download or read book A Sketch of Jewish History Classic Reprint written by Gustav Karpeles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Jewish History A solitary little vessel is drifting on a vast ocean neither wind nor wave can do it harm. Oft times the mountain-high billows seem about to suck it into their swirl and sink it to the bottom Of the sea; but ever again it rides upon the crests of the waves, serenely sailing on in its course. Under this metaphor our sages of Old conceived the history Of Israel. Israel is the tiny craft sailing in loneliness across a boundless ocean. Again and again he seems about to be engulfed by the nations again and again it looks as though Israel were stricken forever from the list of the peoples Of earth, but he always reappears, rejuvenated, with added num bers, with increased strength. Book The Pulse of Progress

Download or read book The Pulse of Progress written by Ellsworth Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulse of Progress: Including a Sketch of Jewish History Three primary considerations have led to the writing of this book. The first is the modern movement for setting forth the re sults of scientific research, not only in technical publications, but in clear, interesting, and non-technical form without the eucum brance of references, footnotes, and details of proof. The second is the frequently expressed opinion of a number of friends that the ideas as to man and his environment which I have set forth in a dozen books ought to be summarized in a single volume. In the third place, some one ought soon to write a history of human progress which will take full account of recent advances in our knowledge of human geography, ethnography, economics, soci ology, and biology. As a preparation for this, it seems highly de sirable that persons who have original ideas along these lines should set them forth in such a way that they can be subjected to criticism. At first the plan was to limit the book strictly to the three purposes named above. As usually happens, however, the prog ress of the work soon led to the addition of new material in order to round out the subject. Chapters II, III, and IV present the results of new investigations made especially for this book. Other new material is scattered in smaller bits elsewhere. Chap ters V to X are mainly a restatement, rearrangement, and revision of material published during the last twenty years in the books and articles mentioned in the list preceding the index. It has not seemed necessary or advisable to use quotation-marks, al though sections oi as much as two or three pages have, in some cases, been taken, almost unchanged, from some of the books. The source, however, is indicated in all such cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ Throughout, my constant object has been to illustrate the New Testament history and teaching. Even the Scripture Index at the close will show in how many instances this has been attempted. Most earnestly then do I hope, that these pages may be found to cast some additional light on the New Testament, and that they will convey fresh evidence - to my mind of the strongest kind - and in a new direction, of the truth of those things which are most surely believed among us. And now it only remains at the close of these investigations once more to express my own full and joyous belief in that grand truth to which all leads up - that christ IS the end OF the law for righteousness TO every one that believeth. Book A Sketch of Jewish History

Download or read book A Sketch of Jewish History written by Gustav Karpeles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Jewish History The following lectures, translated from the German, were delivered by Doctor Karpeles during the winter of 1895-96 before the lodges of the Independent Order B'ne B'rith at Berlin. The translation is done from stenographic notes printed as manuscript and not published. A few slight changes have been made. A brief and graphic sketch like this necessarily brings the individual views of the writer into great prominence. There may be room for other views diverging widely from his. The Committee believes, however, that the work will be useful in stimulating readers of Jewish History to a renewed and more vigilant examination of the subject in works they have not read carefully, as well as in the great work of Graetz, with which all have a certain familiarity. Book Sketches of Anglo Jewish History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Anglo Jewish History Classic Reprint written by James Picciotto and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Anglo-Jewish History Under William the Conqueror, William Rufus, and Henry I., the Jews were well treated, and increased in numbers and in wealth. It is astonishing what sums of money, enormous for those days, the Jews commanded. William Rufus, who was far from being a devout Catholic, especially befriended them. He even shocked the feelings of the enlightened populations of the day, by holding public intercourse with the enemies of Christ. He ordered a theological contest to take place in London between Christian bishops and Jewish rabbis, and he swore by the face of St Luke that if the rab bis conquered, he would become a Jew. The controversy was carried on in fear and trembling by the bishops, but happily the Jews were covered with confusion. At least so say Christian historians. The reader may perhaps remember the answer of the lion, when a man showed him the figure of a brother lion subjugated by a hunter. It is you who have painted the picture, the Jews may truly say to the Christians. Indeed the Jews had the audacity of alleging that the sup posed victory had been won by fraud, and that in reality they had themselves obtained the best of the argument. Book The History of the Jews Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Jews Classic Reprint written by Gotthard Deutsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes.
