Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring portrait of an overlooked pioneer in Black history and American archaeology The First Black Archaeologist reveals the untold story of a pioneering African American classical scholar, teacher, community leader, and missionary. Born into slavery in rural Georgia, John Wesley Gilbert (1863-1923) gained national prominence in the early 1900s, but his accomplishments are little known today. Using evidence from archives across the U.S. and Europe, from contemporary publications, and from newly discovered documents, this book chronicles, for the first time, Gilbert's remarkable journey. As we follow Gilbert from the segregated public schools of Augusta, Georgia, to the lecture halls of Brown University, to his hiring as the first black faculty member of Augusta's Paine Institute, and through his travels in Greece, western Europe, and the Belgian Congo, we learn about the development of African American intellectual and religious culture, and about the enormous achievements of an entire generation of black students and educators. Readers interested in the early development of American archaeology in Greece will find an entirely new perspective here, as Gilbert was one of the first Americans of any race to do archaeological work in Greece. Those interested in African American history and culture will gain an invaluable new perspective on a leading yet hidden figure of the late 1800s and early 1900s, whose life and work touched many different aspects of the African American experience.
Download or read book From Khartoum to Jerusalem written by Rachel Mairs and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, a collection of papers was found on eBay: a scrapbook, inside which was written 'Testimonial Book of Dragoman Solomon N. Negima'. The letters pasted into the testimonial book bear recommendations of Negima's services as dragoman – a combination of tourist guide and interpreter – in the Holy Land, from travellers of different nationalities, social classes, religions, genders and races. Using these reference letters, and the first-hand published and unpublished accounts of the travellers themselves, this book tells the stories of several such tourists, including the intrepid Victorian female traveller, Ellen E. Miller, and an African–American minister, Rev. Charles T. Walker, who had been born into slavery. Between the lines of others' letters, Solomon Negima's remarkable life story also emerges: from a German mission school in Jerusalem, to the British army in the Sudan, to a successful career as a dragoman in Palestine and Syria, and finally to comfortable retirement with his son, Aziz, and daughter, Olinda, at a Mormon mission in Jerusalem. The discovery of this unique scrapbook allows us an insight into the lives of individuals whose histories would otherwise be lost to us, and a new perspective on the history of travel in the Middle East.

Download or read book Southern Black Creative Writers 1829 1953 written by and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1988-07-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 230 writers are included, and for each the compiler has provided, in addition to a publication history, a brief summary of educational background, occupation, and honors and awards obtained. The most important feature of any work of this kind is the careful selection of those names to be included. Foster has chosen well. . . . Inclusion of lesser-known authors makes this volume useful. Choice This new biobibliographical guide identifies known and little known Southern black writers to 1953, many of whom have received scant critical attention over the years. A large number of the works of early Southern black creative writers did not reach a wide audience because they were privately printed or simply not considered worthy of note. Yet their contributions form an important part of the Southern literary heritage. Each of these writers is summarized in a brief biographical sketch that includes place of residence in the South, vocation/occupation, and identification by genre, as well as a listing of creative writings and publications in which they originally appeared. An insightful introduction perspective.

Book excerpt: There are many books of many kinds and this volume properly classified would probably belong to the "sui generis," "sic trasit gloria mundi" variety. If the reader has grown a little rusty on classic Latin I do not mind saying to him further that the latter phrase has been sometimes translated, "My glorious old aunt has been sick ever since Monday," but I do not think that this revised version has been generally accepted as strictly orthodox. This book cannot be said to have been written without rhyme or reason for its pages hold more rhyme than poetry and three reasons at least, have conspired to give it literary existence. A hundred years and more from now it may be that some far descendant of the author, while fingering the musty shelves of some old library, may find some modest satisfaction in the thought that his ancient sire had "writ" a book.
