Download or read book The Sinner in Luke written by Dwayne H. Adams and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ihis study examines the use of the term "sinner" in Luke -Acts. `There is at present no scholarly consensus on the identity of the "sinner" in the Synoptic Gospels. Although the term is important in the Gospel of Luke, few works target the role of the sinner in it. Even fewer address the curious absence of "sinner" in Acts. Lukes narrative of Jesus's mission to "sinners," together with the comments about Gentiles in the Gospel, prepare readers for the mission to Gentiles in Acts. Luke provides a link for readers by demonstrating how a Jewish religious sect made up of fishermen, toll-collectors, and "sinners," who claimed to have found the Messiah, became a religion with a wide Gentile following. In his use of the term "sinner," Luke suggests that "repentant Jewish sinners" and "repentant Gentile followers" of Jesus represent a fulfillment of Gods promise of universal salvation. "The Sinner in Luke is an important study of a key Lucan theme. When Jesus proclaims release for the sinners as a core element of his message, it is crucial to understand who the sinner is, whether he be a tax collector or a religious leader---or even us. Dwayne Adams's study shows the moral-relational base that is central to the term in the face of other claims about this term's meaning and role in Luke. If one understands this category, one can appreciate Jesus's mission better.'The result is a study well worth reading." ---DARRELL L. BOCK, Dallas Theological Seminary.

Book excerpt: An Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Romance of 2018! I'm not a good man, and I've never pretended to be. I don't believe in goodness or God or any happy ending that isn't paid for in advance. In fact, I've got my own personal holy trinity: in the name of money, sex, and Macallan 18, amen. So when the gorgeous, brilliant Zenny Iverson asks me to teach her about sex, I want to say yes, I really do. Unfortunately, there are several reasons to say no--reasons that even a very bad man like myself can't ignore. 1. She's my best friend's little sister. 2. She's too young for me. Like way too young. 3. She's a nun. Or about to be anyway. But I want her. I want her even with my best friend and God in the way, I want to teach her and touch her and love her, and I know that makes me something much worse than a very bad man. It makes me a sinner. And it's those very sins that are about to save me... ***Sinner is a standalone companion to Priest about Father Bell's brother Sean. You do not have to read Priest or Midnight Mass to read Sinner***
Download or read book Reflections on Biblical Themes by an Octogenarian written by Reuben J. Swanson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on Biblical Themes by an Octogenarian represents the journey into faith by the author of the essays over the span of sixty years in the pastoral ministry and as a professor on college, university, and theological school levels. There has been a continuing growth in understanding from the beginnings of a rather conservative religious background and training to a more mature appreciation and understanding of life. This growth came about through the interchange in the classroom as a student in preparation for ministry, then as a pastor in the everyday work experience and interchange with parishioners and especially in the interchange with students in the classroom. This more mature understanding and growth is reflected in the essays presented in this volume on various themes as listed in the Table of Contents. It is hoped that they will be of value to lay persons and to professionals in the life of the church and in the academic world, and that they will stimulate thought and discussion in parishes and in institutions of higher learning. Some of the viewpoints may seem to be controversial, but how are we to grow intellectually and spiritually unless we wrestle seriously with the deep and profound questions of our faith and life? These reflections are offered with the hope and prayer that they will stimulate discussion and growth in the life of the church in both parish and academic settings.

Download or read book Sin and Its Remedy in Paul written by Nijay K. Gupta and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays considers what light is shed on Pauline soteriology by giving focused attention to the apostle's language and conception of sin. Sometimes Paul appears to present sin and disobedience as transgression, while at other times sin is personified and treated as an enslaving power. Is there a model or perspective that can account for Paul's conceptual range in his discussion of sin? What does careful study of Paul's letters reveal about the christological and pneumatological remedies to the problem of sin as he conceives of them? These questions are explored with attention to individual Pauline letters towards a richer understanding of his attitude towards sin and its remedy.

Download or read book None But the Sinners written by David A. Neale and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1991 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversy between Jesus and his contemporary religionists about 'sinners' is of central concern to the gospel story. This book brings a fresh analysis of Luke's presentation of Jesus' relationship to the 'sinners' and the Pharisees, as well as investigating the role this complex of relations plays in his telling of the gospel drama. Was the seeking of the lost a new or revolutionary aspect of ministry introduced by Jesus? Could Jesus' relationship to 'sinners' have been so dramatic and offensive as actually to distinguish him from the mainstream of religion in his day? These questions are raised in the context of the Lukan historical milieu of the first century
