Book Independency A Great Schism

Download or read book Independency A Great Schism written by Daniel Cawdrey and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate that occurred between Independents and Presbyterians of the 17th century was no small occurrence. Since England, Ireland and Scotland were to take on a national covenant and a Reformed Confession together they had to be of like-mind on the subject of the church. There were over 10,000 documents written and printed during the time of the Westminster Assembly on this issue. This was no small matter. This work by Daniel Cawdrey is extremely important on the doctrine of church government. Cawdrey writes against Dr. John Owen’s work, the “Tract on Schism” published in 1657. Cawdrey masterfully deals with Owen’s work, and explains the nature of Dr. Owen’s mistakes on attempting to justify Independency. Cawdrey not only demonstrates that Dr. Owen is biblically wrong, but also that the position of Independency is in fact a “great schism” to the church of Jesus Christ. Chapters include: Of the Nature of Schism in Scripture Causeless Separation from a true Church is Schism Of the Church Catholic Mystical, and its Union Of the Church Catholic visible, and its Union Independentism in Donatism Of the particular Church, and its Union Independentism, a great Schism This work also contains "an appendix to the former discourse of schism; showing the inconstancy of the Dr. and the inconsistency of his former and present opinions." This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book The Christian and the Sword

Download or read book The Christian and the Sword written by Peter Walpot and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a major doctrinal tract of the Hutterites of the sixteenth century, this early Anabaptist document gives Biblical references for Christian nonviolence. Concerning the Sword is the fourth article of the Article Book, a major doctrinal document of the Hutterites of the sixteenth century. Its author is not named but was probably the Hutterian bishop Peter Walpot (1521-1578). The book deals with the following five articles: (1) Concerning true baptism (and how infant baptism contradicts it); (2) Concerning the Lord's Supper (and how the sacrament of the priests is against it); (3) Concerning the true surrender (Gelassenheit) and Christian community of goods; (4) That Christians should not go to war nor should they use sword or violence nor secular litigation; (5) Concerning divorce between believers and unbelievers. The book is not a theological treatise, but rather, like all Anabaptist doctrinal writings, a collection of biblical texts topically arranged to prove the position of the church with regard to the question at issue. The title of the larger edition, A Beautiful and Pleasant Little Book Concerning the Main Articles of our Faith, is quite colorless; more to the point is the title used in the Chronicle of the Hutterian Brethren: The Five Articles of the Greatest Conflict Between Us and the World. It does not pretend to contain a complete system of Anabaptist thought but only a collection of those points and their arguments that distinguish the Brethren from the "world" and justify their particular stand. The Article Book must have been widely known in its time. Catholics as well as Lutheran polemics against it are known.

Book A Vindication of the Continued Succession of the Primitive Church of Jesus Christ

Download or read book A Vindication of the Continued Succession of the Primitive Church of Jesus Christ written by John Spittlehouse and published by Wipf & Stock Pub. This book was released on 2009 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present tract before the reader is an exceedingly rare one indeed. According to David Wing's Short-Title Catalogue 1641-1700, only one copy of Spittlehouse and More's Vindication is known to be extant in any library in the world. And this copy resides at the American Baptist Historical Society in Rochester, New York. In terms of theme, this aspect of the tract is clearly manifest in the very title of the work. Messrs. Spittlehouse and More laboured to defend the doctrine of the perpetuity of Christ's assembly. And the kind of ekklesia they argue is perpetual is not the ecclesiastical nonentity that we have come to know through theological history as the universal invisible church, but rather a local congregation of immersed disciples who follow Christ and keep his commands. - Introduction.

Book excerpt: "Judged by the reception it met at the hands of those in power, both in Church and State, equally in Roman Catholic and in Protestant countries, the Anabaptist movement was one of the most tragic in the history of Christianity; but, judged by the principles, which were put into play by the men who bore this reproachful nickname, it must be pronounced one of the most momentous and significant undertakings in man's eventful religious struggle after the truth. It gathered up the gains of earlier movements, it is the spiritual soil out of which all nonconformist sects have sprung, and it is the first plain announcement in modern history of a programme for a new type of Christian society which the modern world, especially in America and England, has been slowly realizing-an absolutely free and independent religious society, and a State in which every man counts as a man, and has his share in shaping both Church and State." These words of Rufus M. Jones2 constitute one of the best characterizations of Anabaptism and its contribution to our modern Christian culture to be found in the English language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church's Broken Unity: On Anabaptism, the Independents, and Quakerism All hold it necessary to baptize. Thus S. John is called The Baptist, because he baptized and we should be very unwilling to lose the idea that we were following the precept of our lord, when He told us to go and baptize all nations. Baptism is the distinctive badge and mark of all Christians. We are all Baptists. But the very point of distinction and cutting off from the great body of the Church in the sect I am now describing is, that they baptize over again - which no other Christians ever do. If one enters into this community already baptized as an infant, they baptize such an one over again, passing by and ignoring the fact of any other baptism than their own. Hence, ana-baptist is the proper word by which they should be described, as mark ing the essence of their heresy. Book Judaeo Christian Intellectual Culture in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Judaeo Christian Intellectual Culture in the Seventeenth Century written by A.P. Coudert and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-06-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MURIEL MCCARTHY This volume originated from a seminar organised by Richard H. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.
