Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Catholic Church, Vol. 1: From the Renaissance to the French Revolution The remarkably rapid sale of the First Edition is attributed by the author more to the importance of the subject dealt with than to the merits of his work. Everywhere - in Ireland, Great Britain, the United States, and Australia - the History of the Catholic Church from the Renaissance to the French Revolution has received a generous welcome. Students interested in this period of Church History were delighted to find that, while the Reformation movement on the Continent had not been neglected, particular attention had been given to its origin and progress in England, Ireland, and Scotland. The author wishes to express his thanks to the reviewers, publishers, and printers, as well as to the students of the College who assisted him in preparing the Second Edition. Book The Story of the Catholic Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Catholic Church Classic Reprint written by George Stebbing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Catholic ChurchThe following pages are an attempt to give within a limited compass the main outlines of the events which make up the Story of the Catholic Church. That story is one that has no equal, whether we consider the number of persons, places, and vicissitudes involved, or the real importance of the interests at stake. It is, in fact, the very width and diversity of the subject matter which help to make it difficult to weave into one connected narrative. Yet, it is not without a centre. There is a unity in the subject strong enough to give form to the multitude of details, if only it can be properly handled. The problem for a writer must therefore be the accomplishment of this. Is there any hope of rising to his great argument, at least so far as to furnish an intelligible sketch of the mighty panorama unrolled before him? Nothing less than this hope assuredly would give heart to anyone to attempt the task. In such an enterprise as this a perfect work is, of course, out of the question. An outline that shall be true as far as it goes, not indeed showing everything, but mindful of balance and proportion and connection, would recompense much toil. And this is all that the present book aims at. To present that matchless story from one point of view in a way that any reader can understand, carrying him on from age to age and from land to land without undue weariness or distraction, but not forgetting the abiding centre and living unity which govern it, this has been the author's aim.Hence, although the plan of the book has needed some thought, and its details not inconsiderable labour, it can lay no claim to be a work of research. It has no new and startling secrets to reveal, no abstruse theories to discuss. It would not be a field adequate for such; but nothing has been put down which did not seem warranted by the facts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book New Short History of the Catholic Church

Download or read book New Short History of the Catholic Church written by Norman Tanner and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ____________ 'A useful book of reference by the master of the history of the councils of the Church... There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.

Book A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States IT is seldom, indeed, that the American Catholic author of a strictly Catholic book, has the gratification of adding a few words to the fourth edition of his fist book within a few months after its first issue. Yet, scarcely six months have passed since the first copy of the present volume was given to the public. The earliest edition was so quickly disposed of, that I had but little time to make a hasty re vision, when another was called for. Soon a third edition was demanded, and, now, a fourth. I feel that I am deeply indebted to the kindness and generous appreciation of our Catholic public. To express fully my warm gratitude, I am at a loss for fitting terms. Were my volume a novel, or a romance, I would not be so astonished at its success; but it is a book of dates, facts, and figures, a book in which imagination had little room for play, a book, in fine, standing on the solid ground of truth. But, after all, perhaps, truth is stranger than fiction. Nor are my thanks less due to the American, Canadian, and British press, for the friendly expressions of welcome, the manly, courteous reception accorded to my first literary venture in the book-world. But I thank, above all, those learned and venerable Rulers of the Church whose valued, weighty, and beauti ful words of encouragement, I'can never forget. In the designs of God's providence this vast empire was destined to aid in spreading far and wide the Christian faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Catholic Church This sublime purpose of Christ has always been the main object pursued by the Church. It is the highest aspect and aim of Christianity. But Christianity has two aspects: one, partially described above, is all divine, and looking to God; contemplating man, not in his temporal existence, but in the eternal state of being. This is the direct object of the existence of the Church. But it may be easily shown that the Church, which appears to have been intended exclusively for our happiness in a future life, is also to serve for the furtherance and maintenance of our well-being here below. Book Fathers of the Catholic Church

Download or read book Fathers of the Catholic Church written by Ellet Joseph Waggoner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fathers of the Catholic Church: A Brief Examination of the "Falling Away" Of the Church in the First Three Centuries This work is designed especially for people who have not the time nor the means to become thoroughly informed in matters of church history; and also for itinerant ministers and Bible workers, who, even though they be well read, can not carry a theological library with them from which to quote in time of need. It is hoped, also, that the book may serve as an incentive to some to make a systematic study of church history, and may aid them in so doing. And it is not impossible that the grouping of subjects may suggest new ideas, even to those who have read the entire history of the early church. Indeed, the book is mainly suggestive, the most exhaustive portion being the chapter on Sun-wor ship and Sunday. History repeats itself; and only he who knows the course of error in the past can be on his guard against its insidious approaches in the future. Book excerpt: In this extraordinary book, the renowned Hans Kung chronicles the Roman Catholic Church’s role as a world power throughout history. He examines great schisms — between East and West, Catholicism and Protestantism — the evolving role of the papacy and the stories of the great reforming popes; and the expansion of a global Church infrastructure. The book concluded with a searching assessment of how the Catholic faith will confront the immense challenges posed in the new millennium by the scientific community, by women questioning their role in the Church, and by those seeking reform of the strictures against abortion and contraception. The Catholic Church is a landmark book by a controversial and profoundly influential thinker.
