This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps a little less glamorous and famous than Shakespeare's Birthplace or Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Clopton Bridge stood alone for half a millennium as Stratford-Upon-Avon's only road crossing of the River Avon. Often overlooked but none the less a vital part of the life of the town, the current Clopton Bridge traces its heritage to the late 15th century. Maurice Ribbans pulls together a wealth of information and previously unpublished history for this look at a landmark structure that has played its part in making Stratford-Upon-Avon one of the treasures of England and of the world.

Book A Little History of British Gardening

Download or read book A Little History of British Gardening written by Jenny Uglow and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get out in your garden and discover the history hidden in the hedges. Did the Romans have rakes? Did the monks get muddy? Did potatoes seem really, really weird when they arrived on our shores? Drawn from Jenny Uglow's own love for plants, this lively 'potted' history of gardening in Britain takes us on a garden tour from the thorn hedges around prehistoric settlements to the rage for ornamental grasses and 'outdoor rooms' today. Tracking down the ordinary folk who worked the earth - from weeding women to florists - as well as aristocrats and grand designers and famous plant-hunters, A Little History of British Gardening is brought to life by gorgeously vivid illustrations and Uglow's insightful wisdom. Not only dealing with flowery meads, grottoes and vistas, landscapes and ha-has, parks and allotments, Uglow explains, for example, how the Tudors made their curious knots; how housewives used herbs to stop freckles; how the suburbs dug for victory in World War II. With a brief guide to particular historic or evocative gardens open to the public, this is a book to put in your pocket when planning a crisp, winter's day out - but also to read in your armchair with a well-earned glass of red, after a hard day's graft in your own garden. 'Enchanting, stirringly evocative and fascinating' Daily Mail 'This book will be a joy for any gardener' Independent

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War RAF Bomber Command produced a handful of remarkable pilots who won fame and high honors: Gibson, Cheshire, Martin, Tait, and Searby. The majority of aircrew, however, were young sergeants, many of whom did not survive to complete a first tour of thirty operations. Between the two extremes, there were, on every squadron, one or two senior captains who had survived one tour and whose experience, skill, courage, and example made a vital contribution to their squadron's life, training and operational success. This book is about one such captain, Flight Lieutenant Jack Wetherly, DFC. It traces his development from novice second pilot of a Wellington in the pioneering days of 1940 to senior captain of a Halifax in Wing-Commander Leonard Cheshire's squadron in what MRAF Sir Arthur Harris called his 'Main Offensive'. It deals also with his pre-war life and service, flying tiny bi-planes with the RAFVR, and with his career as a flying instructor at the RAF College Cranwell and as an instructor of instructors at RAF Montrose.Above all, it is a personal book, inspired by the sacrifice made nearly half a century ago by a young man of twenty-eight. Acclaim for the work:''Reading Portrait of a Bomber Pilot, I felt that I was living with Jack Wetherly through the last few years of his young life. He is a good man to be with honorable, selfless, and an exceptional pilot...Christopher Jary has written of Jack Wetherly carefully, unsentimentally, and very movingly. He has added a chapter to the brave, sad story of World War Two''.

Book A Short History of the 39th Deptford Divisional Artillery 1915 1918

Download or read book A Short History of the 39th Deptford Divisional Artillery 1915 1918 written by Lt.-Col. H. W. Wiebkin and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artillery brigades and ammunition column that served the 39th Division were raised through the efforts of the Mayor and Borough Council of Deptford between May and August 1915; the brigades were numbered 174, 179, 184 and 186. The opening chapter describes in some detail the circumstances under which they were formed. The division went to France at the beginninig of March 1916 and remained on the Western Front for the rest of the war. The first part of the book provides a brief account of the artillery's battle experiences on the Somme (Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval and the Schwaben Redoubt); in the Salient through 1917; in the great retreat following the German March offensive, and finally in the Advance to Victory. In all their casualties amounted to some 1760 out of a divisional total of 27,869. The greater and more significant part of the book (sixty percent), is taken up with very informative appendices, which include: a table detailing the order of battle of the divisional artillery; the nominal roll of officers who served in it, in alphabetical order; casualties to officers and casualties to men, giving nature of casualty, i.e. killed, wounded etc. For some reason the date of casualty is given for the men (who are listed by unit, in chronological order) but not for the officers, who are not listed in any apparent order. Finally there is a list of Honours and Awards.
