Book A Short History of Callawassie Island South Carolina

Download or read book A Short History of Callawassie Island South Carolina written by William A Behan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CALLAWASSIE ISLAND BOASTS RICH HISTORY Callawassie Island is a small subtropical sea island with a long and rich history. The island is located in Beaufort County, South Carolina along the headwaters of the pristine Colleton River between the town of Beaufort and Hilton Head Island, SC. Throughout the five thousand years preceding the eighteenth century Callawassie Island was occupied by numerous Native American cultures, which left a rich archaeology legacy. The Yemassee Indians, who inhabited the Carolina low country in the early eighteenth century, gave the island its name. After they rebelled in 1715 the English expelled the Yemassees and began their own settlements. The island's owners and residents from that era until twenty years ago shared one trait in common. They were consummate risk takers. The risk taking took many forms. Some sought money and power, others were motivated by Patriotism, and others sought personal safety or simple survival. In A Short History of Callawassie Island you will meet these people--famous, infamous, and just plain ordinary. And you will also meet Callawassie Island--beautiful, quiet, and even mysterious. It is a Callawassie Island that eloquently rewarded the risk takers, but sometimes in unexpected ways for them.

Book excerpt: In writing this book I hope to give you some feeling of what Hilton Head Island was like before and after the Bridge. I was encouraged by many friends who listened to the stories my mother would entertain them with when Hilton Head was one of the islands inhabited mostly by blacks. She knew them as friends, and since some spoke Gullah, a dialect spoken by low-country island natives, it helped that she spoke it fluently (or at least communicated beautifully). Hilton Head at that time was truly an island paradise with beautiful virgin forest, environmentally pristine marshes, miles of uninhabited beach and one dirt road! This was the island I knew as a teenager in 1951. This is a history of Hilton Head that I have been a part of and watched year by year develop into what we see today. It has been a great experience and I hope you enjoy the stories of some of the true pioneers of Hilton Head Island. But when all is said and done, I truly know that islanders either "old" or "nearly new" all love this island. And that is why I'm writing this book: to share its "old" tales with the "nearly new."

Book A New South Hunt Club

Book excerpt: Hilton Head Island is a world-class resort, a playground for the wealthy, a golfer's paradise. Or at least it has been for the last tiny fragment of its long history. Some very special businessmen-turned-hunters were among the last people to know the South Carolina sea island in its natural state, before it became famous. The Hilton Head Agricultural Company, incorporated in 1917, was comprised of mill owners, bankers, physicians, and other local leaders from three communities: Gastonia, North Carolina; Clover, South Carolina; and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Every year, those men would slough off their high-powered business concerns, pile in their cars, make the long drive to the coast, arrange for a boat to Hilton Head, and traverse the wild island to the simple hunting camp they had established there. It was a journey not only across distance but through time as well. The men traded their suits and ties for rough clothing, forswore communications with the outside world, lived communal

Book Wandering in Strange Lands

Download or read book Wandering in Strange Lands written by Morgan Jerkins and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of TIME's 100 Must Read Books of 2020 and one of Good Housekeeping's Best Books of the Year “One of the smartest young writers of her generation.”—Book Riot Featuring a new afterword from the author, Morgan Jerkins' powerful story of her journey to understand her northern and southern roots, the Great Migration, and the displacement of black people across America. Between 1916 and 1970, six million black Americans left their rural homes in the South for jobs in cities in the North, West, and Midwest in a movement known as The Great Migration. But while this event transformed the complexion of America and provided black people with new economic opportunities, it also disconnected them from their roots, their land, and their sense of identity, argues Morgan Jerkins. In this fascinating and deeply personal exploration, she recreates her ancestors’ journeys across America, following the migratory routes they took from Georgia and South Carolina to Louisiana, Oklahoma, and California. Following in their footsteps, Jerkins seeks to understand not only her own past, but the lineage of an entire group of people who have been displaced, disenfranchised, and disrespected throughout our history. Through interviews, photos, and hundreds of pages of transcription, Jerkins braids the loose threads of her family’s oral histories, which she was able to trace back 300 years, with the insights and recollections of black people she met along the way—the tissue of black myths, customs, and blood that connect the bones of American history. Incisive and illuminating, Wandering in Strange Lands is a timely and enthralling look at America’s past and present, one family’s legacy, and a young black woman’s life, filtered through her sharp and curious eyes.
