Book A Short History of Balloons and Flying Machines

Download or read book A Short History of Balloons and Flying Machines written by Lord Montagu and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Although the wing of the bird seemed like the most obvious natural mechanism to attempt replicate, it was actually contained hot air, as demonstrated by the Montgolfiers and their balloon, that gave birth to the era human aviation. Since the first manned balloon flight in 1783, developments have come thick and fast, the airship, the aeroplane, and finally the space shuttle. This reprint of a classic publication by Lord Montagu, from 1907, details the early history of aviation. Complete with illustrations and a brand new introduction, and containing sections such as 'Navigable Balloons', 'A Balloon Duel', and 'A Perilous Ascent', it is a wonderful work for anyone with an interest in the technology and interesting events of the lighter-than-air period of aeronautics.

Excerpt: ...immediately surrounds the earth, where they at length bethought themselves of lunch. M. Tissandier finished his portion of a fowl by tossing a well-picked drumstick overboard. For this imprudence the professional was down upon him immediately. "Do you know," said he, "that to throw out ballast without orders is a very serious crime in a balloon?" M. Tissandier was at first inclined to argue the point, but on looking at the sensitive barometer he was fain to admit that in consequence of the disappearance of the chicken-bone the balloon had made an upward bound of nearly thirty yards. After a pleasant voyage, they sighted a lighthouse and descended near the spot where Rosier fell and was killed in 1785. THE SIEGE OF PARIS. A STRANGE VOYAGE IN A BALLOON. On the 24th November 1870 M. Paul Rolier, the eminent engineer, with a rifleman ascended in a balloon in order to convey dispatches from Paris to the exiled party at Tours. On taking his place at the railway station Du Nord in the balloon, M. Rolier conveyed 250 kilograms weight of despatches and six pigeons. The Prussians having surveyed the sky as they were blockading the city, and had cannons cast for the purpose of directing them against balloons, it was necessary to set out at night in order to avoid the German projectiles. Scarcely had the balloon started than it rose to a height of 2,000 metres, challenging the whole Prussian Camp, whose fires M. Rolier perceived like the phosphorescence of a considerable number of glow-worms. The wind blew very violently, the balloon was rushing at a fearful rate, and presently they heard the noise of waves breaking on the shore. All at once a thick fog enveloped them; suddenly the fog cleared and they found they were proceeding...

II. - The Parisian philosophers resolved to use, instead of vapour, inflammable air. This being expensive, the author of the book now quoted set on foot a subscription and raised a sum sufficient to set to work, and they constructed a globe of taffetas glazed over with elastic gum, this was filled with inflammable air, produced from lbs. Book excerpt: The hot air balloon has a fascinating history of much trial and error, scientific research and bold adventure. This book chronicles the development and advances in the endeavor and also provides insights into the people who developed the sport--many of whom lost their lives in the process. The book traces the history of ballooning from the Montgolfier brothers' first experiments with a paper balloon in Annonay, France, in 1782, through the next several decades, when the sport's waning novelty forced aeronauts to develop bigger, better and more dangerous tricks. It concludes at the beginning of the 20th century, when the age of the airplane rendered hot air balloons all but obsolete.

Book The Early History of Ballooning The Age of the Aeronaut

Download or read book The Early History of Ballooning The Age of the Aeronaut written by Fraser Simons and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century - the age of the budget airline - where quick and reliable air travel is available to a large segment of society, it seems hard to comprehend that it is less than 250 years since the first human took to the skies. Beginning with the weird and wonderful early attempts at flight, such as the Benedictine monk who launched himself off Malmesbury Abbey, this book illustrates the history of the earliest and most majestic of aviation technologies, the balloon. When the Montgolfier brothers demonstrated the first hot air balloon in 1783 they ushered in 'the age of the aeronaut' an era where daring pioneers like Pilâtre de Rozier, and Jean-Pierre Blanchard risked their lives to set new records and entertain the adoring crowds. The following century was captivated by 'Balloonomania', the ascents becoming ever more ambitious, the field of scientific ballooning appearing, and the balloon even being adapted for use in warfare. It is this grand period, from the balloon's inception to the birth of the aeroplane, that is the subject of this work. Containing chapters from classic writers on aeronautical history, such as R. M Ballantyne, Camille Flammarion, W. de Fonvielle, and Benjamin Franklin, and with a generous helping of beautiful colour illustrations and contextual notes, this is a fantastic read for ballooning aficionados and new-comers to the subject alike.
