Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asserting that real property law can only be understood in the light of its historical evolution, the authors fulfill that need for the reader. In particular, the book enables first year law students to build a sound foundation for further study. Included are the methods of holding land - feudal tenures; estates in land; seisin, the real actions and adverse possession; incorporeal interests; and estates held in co-ownership.

Book An Historical Introduction to the Land Law

Download or read book An Historical Introduction to the Land Law written by Sir William Searle Holdsworth and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historical Roots of English Land Law. Originally published: London: Oxford University Press, 1927. xxiv, 339 pp. One of the most distinguished historians of English common law, Holdsworth produced this manual to provide students of real property with a concise history of the field. This background was necessary, he argued, because contemporary land law was hard to comprehend apart from its history. "[Holdsworth] has cheerfully carried through the task of giving us an elementary survey of one part of the vast subject in the mastery of which he stands alone. Most writers of manuals have to popularize the results of the labour of others; Professor Holdsworth need pillage few storehouses but his own." --Law Quarterly Review 44: (1928) 105. William S. Holdsworth [1871-1944] was a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Cambridge from 1903-1966 and became the Vinerian Professor of English Law at Oxford in 1922. He is well-known for his monumental A History of English Law (1903-1966) and other works, such as Charles Dickens as a Legal Historian (1929) and Some Makers of English Law (1938).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the Law of Real Property: With Original Authorities My object in undertaking tins work was to attempt in some degree to supply a want which at present greatly impedes the study of English law at the Universities. There is no really elementary work on the English law of real property adapted for students who have not and may never have any practical experience in the working of the law. Almost all elementary books have been written from the professional rather than the educational point of view; excellent as many of them are as introductions to a practical knowledge of law, they are scarcely available for purposes of legal education at an University. Blackstone's treatise stands almost alone in adequately satisfying both demands. It has been the fashion of late to dwell on the defects rather than on the merits of that great work, and there are obvious reasons why it is hardly adapted to the requirements of the present time. Nevertheless Blackstone still remains unrivalled as an expositor of the law of his day. Throughout the following pages his work is referred to as at once the most available, and the most trustworthy authority on the law of the eighteenth century. In considering the mode in which the elementary principles of the important branch of English law, which is the subject of this treatise, can best be dealt with, there can be little question that it is necessary to begin by sketching the history and development of rights over land.
