Book Treatment of Late Life Insomnia

Download or read book Treatment of Late Life Insomnia written by Kenneth L. Lichstein and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2000-03-21 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatment of Late Life Insomnia is an extremely valuable, authoritative and comprehensive resource not only for practitioners of sleep medicine but also for any health-care practitioner who finds themselves working with the elderly population. —Michael V. Vitiello, Ph.D. Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington & Editor in Chief (for the Americas) of Sleep Medicine Reviews Insomnia occurs among older adults (65+ years) at a rate 50% to 100% higher than in younger age groups, and the consequences of insomnia in the elderly are much more severe than in younger age groups. Elders who exhibit a chronic pattern of insomnia dwell on their anticipation of a poor night′s sleep. In many cases, this worry takes on an obsessive quality that degrades multiple aspects of the individual′s life. In the past decade there has been a great deal of clinical research directed toward the development of effective interventions for insomnia among older adults. Methods of insomnia assessment have been developed and key diagnostic issues have crystallized. Yet until now, no book has gathered together this flourishing body of literature. Treatment of Late-Life Insomnia provides a comprehensive research/clinical accounting of insomnia treatment in older adults. The first section of the book, Overview, describes typical normal and disturbed sleep patterns in older adults, demographics, and methods of evaluation and differential diagnosis. The core of the book, the middle section, entitled Intervention Strategies, reviews the clinical outcome research of the major treatments for late-life insomnia and teaches the clinical procedures in the style of a clinical handbook. The final section, Special Treatment Topics, explores cutting-edge research and methods of clinical management for pressing topics in late-life insomnia that have only recently attracted systematic investigation. This book is geared toward students, scientists, and health practitioners engaged in the areas of geriatrics, sleep disorders, and behavioral medicine. These disciplines cut across a wide variety of professional groups that would find such a book useful, including psychology, psychiatry, counseling, internal medicine, geriatric medicine, nursing, and social work.

  • Author : Philip G. Smucker

Download or read book Riding with George written by Philip G. Smucker and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before George Washington was a president or general, he was a sportsman. Born in 1732, he had a physique and aspirations that were tailor made for his age, one in which displays of physical prowess were essential to recognition in society. At six feet two inches and with a penchant for rambunctious horse riding, what he lacked in formal schooling he made up for in physical strength, skill, and ambition. Virginia colonial society rewarded men who were socially adept, strong, graceful, and fair at play. Washington's memorable performances on the hunting field and on the battlefield helped crystallize his contribution to our modern ideas about athleticism and chivalry, even as they also highlight the intimate ties between sports and war. Washington's actions, taken individually and seen by others as the core of his being, helped a young nation bridge the old to the new and the aristocrat to the republican. Author Philip G. Smucker, a fifth-great-grandnephew of George Washington, uses his background as a war correspondent, sports reporter, and amateur equestrian to weave an insightful tale based upon his own travels in the footsteps and hoofprints of Washington as a surveyor, sportsman, and field commander. As often as possible, he saddles up and charges off to see what Washington's woods, byways, and battlefields look like from atop a saddle. Riding with George is "boots-in-stirrups" storytelling that unspools Washington's rise to fame in a never-before-told yarn. It shows how a young Virginian's athleticism and Old World chivalry propelled him to become a model of right action and good manners for a fledgling nation.

Book Authorship in Film Adaptation

Download or read book Authorship in Film Adaptation written by Jack Boozer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoring a film adaptation of a literary source not only requires a media conversion but also a transformation as a result of the differing dramatic demands of cinema. The most critical central step in this transformation of a literary source to the screen is the writing of the screenplay. The screenplay usually serves to recruit producers, director, and actors; to attract capital investment; and to give focus to the conception and production of the film project. Often undergoing multiple revisions prior to production, the screenplay represents the crucial decisions of writer and director that will determine how and to what end the film will imitate or depart from its original source. Authorship in Film Adaptation is an accessible, provocative text that opens up new areas of discussion on the central process of adaptation surrounding the screenplay and screenwriter-director collaboration. In contrast to narrow binary comparisons of literary source text and film, the twelve essays in this collection also give attention to the underappreciated role of the screenplay and film pre-production that can signal the primary intention for a film. Divided into four parts, this collection looks first at the role of Hollywood's activist producers and major auteurs such as Hitchcock and Kubrick as they worked with screenwriters to formulate their audio-visual goals. The second part offers case studies of Devil in a Blue Dress and The Sweet Hereafter, for which the directors wrote their own adapted screenplays. Considering the variety of writer-director working relationships that are possible, Part III focuses on adaptations that alter genre, time, and place, and Part IV investigates adaptations that alter stories of romance, sexuality, and ethnicity.
