Book A Short Account of the Historical Development and Present Position of Russian Orthodox Missions

Download or read book A Short Account of the Historical Development and Present Position of Russian Orthodox Missions written by Eugenii Smirnov and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions proposed repeatedly referred to our missions. Moreover, I have noticed during the lengthy period of my life beyond the frontiers of Russia, that the substance of these questions has gradually taken a different form. At first, I used to be asked: ' Of course you have not yet any missions, any more than you had in former times? ' Then: ' Is it true that you have established some sort of mission in Japan?' Further on: £ It seems that you have missions of some sort in Siberia? ' Still further : ' Could you not give us some precise statistics as to the number of conversions in your missions ? ' And finally : ' What is your opinion--would it not be better for us to close our mission in Japan, in order not to hinder the regular growth of your mission, especially as our Church aims at reunion with yours V It is evident how the questions gradually took a different form in accordance with the spread of information concerning the working of our missions appearing in the pages of the periodical press. The contents of my little work hardly require any explanation. At one time the enemies of Orthodoxy gave currency to the assertion that the Orthodox Eastern Church never had and has not now any missions, that she is in a state of stagnation and backwardness, and is therefore on the brink of destruction. The reader can judge for himself how far these assertions are just.Eugenii Konstantinovich Konstantinovich

Book Embassy Emigrants and Englishmen

Download or read book Embassy Emigrants and Englishmen written by Christopher Birchall and published by Holy Trinity Publications. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the unlikely history of a centuries old church located at the heart of England's capital city. Founded in the early-18th century by a Greek Archbishop from Alexandria in Egypt, the church was aided by the nascent Russian Empire of Tsar Peter the Great and joined by Englishmen finding in it the Apostolic faith. The church later became a spiritual home for those who escaped the upheavals following World War II or who sought economic opportunities in the West after the fall of communism in Russia. For much of this time the parish was a focal point for Anglican–Orthodox relations and Orthodox missionary endeavors from Japan to the Americas. This is a history of the Orthodox Church in the West, of the Russian emigration to Europe, and of major world events through the prism of a particular local community. The book calls on stories from an array of persons, from archbishops to members of Parliament and imperial diplomats to post-war refugees. Their lives and the constantly changing mosaic of global political and economic realities provide the background for the struggle to create and sustain the London church through time.

Book Eastern Orthodox Mission Theology Today

Download or read book Eastern Orthodox Mission Theology Today written by James J. Stamoolis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-11-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the ASM Series is to publish, without regard for disciplinary, national, or denominational boundaries, scholarly works of high quality and wide interest on missiological themes from the entire spectrum of scholarly pursuits, e.g., theology, history, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, health, education, art, political science, economics, and development, to articulate but a partial list. Always the focus will be on Christian mission. By "mission" in this context is meant a cross-cultural passage over the boundary between faith in Jesus Christ and its absence. In this understanding of mission, the basic functions of Christian proclamation, dialogue, witness, service, fellowship, worship, and nurture are of special concern. How does the transition from one cultural context to another influence the shape and interaction of these dynamic functions? Missiologists know that they need the other disciplines. And other disciplines, we dare to suggest, need missiology, perhaps more than they sometimes realize. Neither the insider's nor the outsider's view is complete in itself. The world Christian mission has through two millennia amassed a rich and well-documented body of experience to share with other disciplines. Interaction will be the hallmark of this Series. It desires to be a channel for talking to one another instead of about one another. Secular scholars and church-related missiologists have too long engaged in a sterile venting of feelings about one another, often lacking in full evidence. Ignorance of and indifference to one another's work has been no less harmful to good scholarship. The promotion of scholarly dialogue among missiologists may, at times, involve the publication of views and positions that other missiologists cannot accept, and with which members of the Editorial Committee do not agree. The manuscripts published reflect the opinions of their authors and are not meant to represent the position of the American Society of Missiology or the Editorial Committee of the ASM Series. We express our warm thanks to various mission agencies whose financial contributions enabled leaders of vision in the ASM to launch this new venture. The future of the ASM series will, we feel sure, fully justify their confidence and support. William J. Danker, Chairperson ASM Series Editorial Committee

Book Russian Bible Wars

Download or read book Russian Bible Wars written by Stephen K. Batalden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although biblical texts were known in Church Slavonic as early as the ninth century, translation of the Bible into Russian came about only in the nineteenth century. Modern scriptural translation generated major religious and cultural conflict within the Russian Orthodox church. The resulting divisions left church authority particularly vulnerable to political pressures exerted upon it in the twentieth century. Russian Bible Wars illuminates the fundamental issues of authority that have divided modern Russian religious culture. Set within the theoretical debate over secularization, the volume clarifies why the Russian Bible was issued relatively late and amidst great controversy. Stephen Batalden's study traces the development of biblical translation into Russian and of the 'Bible wars' that then occurred in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Russia. The annotated bibliography of the Russian Bible identifies the different editions and their publication history.
