This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Account of the Ancient and Modern State of the City and Close of Lichfield It has long been a source of surprise and disappointment to travellers, that a city, celebrated for giving birth to several eminent characters, and possessing in itself so many attractions, should be deficient, in what other places, of comparatively little interest furnish to the enquirer; a short account of its beauties and antiquities. With the intention of obviating that deficiency the following pages are offered. To the admirers of Johnson, the views of his birth place, the willow, and the house of his daughter in law, the author presumes will not be unacceptable, and trusts the public will view his efforts with candor and indulgence. A short account of the Cathedral, Painted Glass, Monuments, &c., is already published; little has therefore been said of it in this volume. Book First Among Friends George Fox and the Creation of Quakerism

Download or read book First Among Friends George Fox and the Creation of Quakerism written by H. Larry Ingle Professor of History University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994-03-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In First Among Friends, the first scholarly biography of George Fox (1624-91), H. Larry Ingle examines the fascinating life of the reformation leader and founding organizer of the Religious Society of Friends, more popularly known today as the Quakers. Ingle places Fox within the upheavals of the English Civil Wars, Revolution, and Restoration, showing him and his band of "rude" disciples challenging the status quo, particularly during the Cromwellian Interregnum. Unlike leaders of similar groups, Fox responded to the conservatism of the Stuart restoration by facing down challenges from internal dissidents, and leading his followers to persevere until the 1689 Act of Toleration. It was this same sense of perseverance that helped the Quakers survive--the only religious sect of the era still existing today. Firmly grounded in primary sources and enriched with gripping detail, this well-written and original study reveals hitherto unknown sides of one who was clearly "First Among Friends."

Book A Journal of the English Civil War

Download or read book A Journal of the English Civil War written by Sir William Brereton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brereton's journal is a book made up of letters from the English Civil War (1642-1646). A Parliamentary general, Sir William was engaged in the siege of Dudley Castle, Bridgnorth Castle and the fortifield cathedral close at Lichfield. The Letter Book contains copies of letters sent and received by Brereton. There are details of his victory against the last Royalist army in the field, his various sieges, his constant need for money and more troops, and the movements of King Charles I prior to his surrender to the Scots. The Introduction details a history of the civil war, of the battles and skirmishes, up to the writing of the Letter Book. A conclusion relates what happened after: the end of the war, the trial and execution of Charles I, the Interregnum and finally the Restoration and Brereton's retirement from public life.
