Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced textbook presents an extensive and diverse study of low-energy nuclear physics considering the nucleus as a quantum system of strongly interacting constituents. The contents guide students from the basic facts and ideas to more modern topics including important developments over the last 20 years, resulting in a comprehensive collection of major modern-day nuclear models otherwise unavailable in the current literature. The book emphasizes the common features of the nucleus and other many-body mesoscopic systems currently in the center of interest in physics. The authors have also included full problem sets that can be selected by lecturers and adjusted to specific interests for more advanced students, with many chapters containing links to freely available computer code. As a result, readers are equipped for scientific work in mesoscopic physics.

Download or read book The Nuclear Shell Model written by Kris L.G. Heyde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at enabling the reader to obtain a working knowledge of the nuclear shell model and to understand nuclear structure within the framework of the shell model. Attention is concentrated on a coherent, self-contained exposition of the main ideas behind the model with ample illustrations to give an idea beyond formal exposition of the concepts. Since this text grew out of a course taught for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in theoretical nuclear physics, the accents are on a detailed exposition of the material with step-by-step derivations rather than on a superficial description of a large number of topics. In this sense, the book differs from a number of books on theoretical nuclear physics by narrowing the subject to only the nuclear shell model. Most of the expressions used in many of the existing books treating the nuclear shell model are derived here in more detail, in a practitioner's way. Due to frequent student requests I have expanded of detail in order to take away the typical phrase " . . . after some the level simple and straightforward algebra one finds . . . ". The material could probably be treated in a one-year course (implying going through the problem sets and setting up a number of numerical studies by using the provided computer codes). The book is essentially self-contained but requires an introductory course on quantum mechanics and nuclear physics on a more general level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series. This year's venue for the conference was the accommodation and social area of the DIAMO company at Straz. The goal of the meeting was to summarize the present situation and the future perspectives concerning the experimental investigations and theoreti cal descriptions of light nuclei and their interactions with electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. The scientific program of the conference included the following areas of research: nuclear physics with pions and antiprotons, T)-meson physics, baryonic systems with strangeness, relativis tic few-body dynamics, and electroweak nuclear interaction. Representatives from many international groups working within different experimental facili ties and with different theoretical methods were invited and asked to present their latest results and future research programs. The Straz conference, attended by 102 physicist from institutions in 22 countries, was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade, and by SKODA PRAHA a.s. Thanks to this sponsorship we could also invite several participants and students at essentially reduced cost.

Book Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics written by F. Iachello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the week of June 6-9, 1978, a group of 36 physicists from 15 countries met in Erice, Sicily, for the first specialized seminar on "Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics". The countries represented were Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Yugoslavia. The Seminar was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI), the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST), the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion (NATO) and the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS). The purpose of the Seminar was to discuss the present status of the Interacting Boson Model both from the theoretical and experi mental point of view. Some of the lectures presented in this book summarize particular aspects of the model and are based on previously published work (F. Iachello, R.F. Casten, Z. Sujkowski, L. Hassel gren, H. Emling, I. Talmi, T. Otsuka, J. McGrory, A.E.L. Dieperink and A. Arima). Others are entirely new. In particular, the lec tures of O. Scholten and A. Gelberg and V. Kaup present the first extensive set of calculations based on the proton-neutron boson model, while the lecture of J.N. Ginocchio describes a fermion model with properties identical to those of the interacting boson model. Also new are the le~tures of D.R. Bes, R.A. Broglia and P.F.

  • ISBN : 9812389458
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Direct Nuclear Reactions written by Norman K. Glendenning and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic volume, reprinted twenty years after it was first published, takes a close look at the theory of direct nuclear reactions. It emphasizes the microscopic aspects of these reactions and their description in terms of the changes induced in the motion of individual nucleons, except where collective motion in nuclei gives a more succinct description. Assuming only a modest knowledge of quantum mechanics and some acquaintance with angular momentum algebra, the book begins essentially at the beginning. Its goal is to provide the novice with the means of becoming competent to do research on direct reactions, and the experienced researcher with a detailed discussion of advanced topics. For completeness, appendices on angular momentum algebra and special functions are included.

Book Gamow Shell Model

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicolas Michel
  • Publisher : Springer Nature

  • Pages : 514 pages

Download or read book Gamow Shell Model written by Nicolas Michel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-24 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first graduate-level, self-contained introduction to recent developments that lead to the formulation of the configuration-interaction approach for open quantum systems, the Gamow shell model, which provides a unitary description of quantum many-body system in different regimes of binding, and enables the unification in the description of nuclear structure and reactions. The Gamow shell model extends and generalizes the phenomenologically successful nuclear shell model to the domain of weakly-bound near-threshold states and resonances, offering a systematic tool to understand and categorize data on nuclear spectra, moments, collective excitations, particle and electromagnetic decays, clustering, elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections, and radiative capture cross sections of interest to astrophysics. The approach is of interest beyond nuclear physics and based on general properties of quasi-stationary solutions of the Schrödinger equation – so-called Gamow states. For the benefit of graduate students and newcomers to the field, the quantum-mechanical fundamentals are introduced in some detail. The text also provides a historical overview of how the field has evolved from the early days of the nuclear shell model to recent experimental developments, in both nuclear physics and related fields, supporting the unified description. The text contains many worked examples and several numerical codes are introduced to allow the reader to test different aspects of the continuum shell model discussed in the book.
