Book excerpt: ‘Tappan’s Burro, and Other Stories’ (1923) is a collection of classic western tales from the master of the genre, American author Zane Grey, best known for his romanticized stories about the old West. Tappan and his burro Jenet, is an impressive, Western duo searching for gold. Jenet is a great companion, since she knows the trails and waterholes of their upcoming journey to remote, dangerous terrain better than her prospecting owner. Trekking through the searing heat of Death Valley and the freezing blizzards of Arizona's mountains, the duo’s adventures take them to the brink of death in the search of gold. This gripping short story is a tale of loyalty, courage and friendship with a Western twist. The book features four other short stories: ‘The Great Slave’, ‘Yaqui’, ‘Tigre’ and ‘The Rubber Hunter’. Pearl Zane Grey (1872 – 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels about the American West. His stories are credited with the creation of the ‘Western’ literary genre. The novel ‘Riders of the Purple Sage’ (1912) was Grey’s best-selling work, while other popular titles include ‘The Lone Star Ranger’ (1915), ‘The U.P. Trail’ (1918), ‘Call of the Canyon’ (1924), and ‘Code of the West’ (1934). His nonfiction books include ‘Tales of Fishing’ (1925). Grey wrote more than 80 books in total, a number of which were published posthumously. Many of his works have been adapted for tv and film, including ‘Zane Grey Theatre’ (1956-1958) and ‘Riders of the Purple Sage’ (1996) starring Ed Harris.

Download or read book Incidents at Whiterock and Other Stories written by Jack Poole and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-07-26 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: In the northwest corner of Nevada, the high desert has laid its claim on people of the land since long before the native Americans who made their home around Pyramid Lake. Legends and myths surround the Black Rock country as vaguely as the winter mists creeping in from the mountains. It is a land of cattle and mining and sheep. In the middle of the twentieth century horses gave way to Toyota Land Cruisers and war surplus Jeeps, and the Basque and Portuguese shepherds moved great flocks of sheep for hundreds of miles. The dogs who were both labor and companions got used to the sound of engines. There were few towns and many lonely ranches. This is a story about one such town and the events which reshaped its life. Author Bio: Jack Poole pursues writing as a second career. He was raised in Michigan, graduated from DePauw University in Indiana, and enjoyed a 31 year engineering administration career in California. Mr. Poole lives and works in Nine Mile Falls, Washington, where his cat, Charlie, is a constant critic.

Book Thrifty Stock and Other Stories

Download or read book Thrifty Stock and Other Stories written by Ben Ames Williams and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first seven stories in this book have either locale or characters in common. The village called Fraternity is an actual one; and the surrounding countryside has a beauty which grows with long acquaintance. It is perhaps unnecessary to say that the characters are—with one exception—fictitious. The exception is Mr. A. L. McCorrison, better known as Bert McCorrison, who introduced the author to the trout brooks and the woodcock covers thereabouts. He appears in some of the stories, under the name of Chet McAusland. The third story in the book, "Old Tantrybogus," is—so far as the dog is concerned—a true story. The last two stories in the Fraternity group, "Jeshurun Waxed Fat" and "Epitome," together with the succeeding seven, are each less than four thousand words in length. These stories represent successive attempts to combine brevity with other and more elusive attributes.

Book Where the Deer and the Antelope Play

Download or read book Where the Deer and the Antelope Play written by Nick Offerman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman Nick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Free—not just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently. In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with pals—a hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020—Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some “deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart. With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.

Book Late for Tea at the Deer Palace

Download or read book Late for Tea at the Deer Palace written by Tamara Chalabi and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Tamara Chalabi, Iraq is more than a country of war and controversy; it is a place of poignant memory. For much of the twentieth century, the Chalabis were among the most influential families in Iraq. In the 1920s they were at the forefront of their country's awakening to modernity, and they played an integral part in the establishment of its monarchy. As courtiers, politicians, businessmen, rebels, merchants, and scholars, the Chalabis enjoyed vast privilege until the end of the 1950s, when they were forced to flee to the land of exile, myth, and imagination, where their beloved homeland took on the quality of a phantom country. In between came rebellions, foreign interventions, and the transformative development of oil wealth. But in 2003, after a lifetime of exile, Tamara arrived in Baghdad just ten days after the city's fall, in the company of her father, Ahmad Chalabi, a leading opposition figure against the Saddam regime. Late for Tea at the Deer Palace chronicles a daughter's return to a homeland she'd known only through stories and her own imagination. As she investigates four generations of her family's history, Tamara offers a rich portrait of Middle Eastern family life and a provocative look at a lost Iraq. The story is populated by an array of unforgettable characters, among them Tamara's great-grandfather Abdul Hussein Chalabi, who as a member of the Ottoman parliament witnessed the end of the empire in Baghdad and the birth of the modern Iraqi state at the hands of the British; her grandfather Abdul Hadi Chalabi, who became one of the wealthiest men in Iraq and had strong ties with the British during World War II; and her grandmother Bibi, a grande dame who presided over Iraq's social and political life during Baghdad's 1920s and '30s heyday as the Paris of the Middle East. At once intimate and magisterial, Late for Tea at the Deer Palace vividly captures the rich, overlooked history of a country that has been uprooted by war and a family that has persevered by never forgetting its dreams or its past.
