Book The Lute in the Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book The Lute in the Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century written by Jan W.J. Burgers and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lute played a central role in the rich musical culture of the seventeenth-century ‘Golden Age’ of the Dutch Republic. Like the piano in the nineteenth century, the lute was not just a popular instrument for solo music making, but was also used widely in ensembles and to accompany singers. Though mainly an instrument of the social elite and the aristocracy, it was also played by the numerous and prosperous burgher class. The first part of the book deals with psalm settings for the lute; the way professional lutenists coped with the harsh rules of the free market; Leiden as a veritable international lute centre; and the different types of lutes that can be reconstructed on the basis of the Dutch paintings of the period. The second part of the book is dedicated to Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687), the well-known poet and statesman, and avid player of, and composer for, the lute. The third and final section deals with Dutch sources of lute music, printed as well as those in manuscript. Taken together, this volume provides a broad and many-layered overview of the lute in the seventeenth century. Collectively, the articles will further the reader’s understanding of the lute in its social and cultural context, not only in the Netherlands, but also on the wider European canvas.

Book Frederick the Great and His Musicians

Download or read book Frederick the Great and His Musicians written by Michael O'Loghlin and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of stagnation, the performing arts began to flourish in Berlin under Frederick the Great. A group of musician-composers were recruited who were to form the basis of a brilliant court ensemble, including C.P.E. Bach and the Graun brothers, encouraged by the presence of Ludwig Christian Hesse. They wrote music for the viola da gamba, an instrument which was already becoming obsolete elsewhere. This study shows how the unique situation in Berlin produced the last major corpus of music written for the viola da gamba, and how the more virtuosic works were probably the result of close collaboration between Hesse and the Berlin School composers. The book will appeal to professional and amateur viola da gamba players as well as to scholars of eighteenth-century German music.

Download or read book A History of Performing Pitch written by Bruce Haynes and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002-11-06 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haynes (U. of Montreal) traces the history of musical pitch standards over the last four centuries, linking frequency values to pitch names and telling where, when, and why various pitch levels have been used. With a focus on Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the Hapsburg lands, he covers the pitches of about 1,400 historical instruments and how the design and function influenced and were influenced by changes in pitch. In addition, he studies the effect of pitch differences on musical notation and choice of key. The author has also written a book on the oboe, the instrument that plays the "A" to which a symphony orchestra tunes. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
