Book excerpt: The prevalence of Brucella abortus, Trypansoma cruzi, Rickettsia rickettsii, and rabies virus serum antibodies in wild-trapped coyotes (Canis latrans) from various areas of southeastern and southern Texas were determined. The buffered Brucella antigen (card), rivanol precipitation, standard agglutination tube, and cold complement fixation tube tests were utilized to detect B. abortus serum antibodies. Of 117 coyotes collected from 12 counties 23.9% (28) from 8 counties had some reactivity to these tests. Fifteen percent (17) had significant levels (positive by two or more tests) of serum antibodies to B. abortus. No appreciable change in antibody titer was observed during 100+ days in two serologically positive coyotes. Brucella abortus was isolated from various tissues from 18.6% (8/43) of the coyotes. Vertical transmission from a naturally infected female coyote to three pups was detected. An attempt to experimentally infect 4 serologically negative coyotes by conjunctival inoculation with B. abotus biotype 2 was unsuccessful. The rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT) which was utilized to detect rabies virus antibodies in 70 sera from coyotes collected from 6 counties determined that 10% (7) were positive. The positive sera were from coyotes collected in three of the counties. The latex agglutination and direct agglutination tests were used to determine the prevalence of T. cruzi serum antibodies in coyotes collected from 6 counties. Four percent (3/72) were serologically positive as indicated by the latex agglutination tests. Eleven percent (8/72) were serologically positive at a serum dilution>̲1:128 as deterimined by the direct agglutination method. The seropositive coyotes were collected from three of the counties. The prevalence of R. rickettsii serum antibodies in coyotes collected from 9 counties was 5.4% (4/74) by the complement fixation micotiter technique. The serologically positive coyotes were collected from three counties.

Book excerpt: We analyzed sympatric wolf, coyote (Canis latrans), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) serologic data from YNP, spanning 1991?2007, to identify long-term patterns of pathogen exposure, identify associated risk factors, and examine evidence for disease-induced mortality among wolves for which there were survival data. We found high, constant exposure to canine parvovirus (wolf seroprevalence: 100%; coyote: 94%), canine adenovirus-1 (wolf pups [0.5?0.9 yr]: 91%, adults [?1 yr]: 96%; coyote juveniles [0.5?1.5 yrs]: 18%, adults [?1.6 yrs]: 83%), and canine herpesvirus (wolf: 87%; coyote juveniles: 23%, young adults [1.6?4.9 yrs]: 51%, old adults [?5 yrs]: 87%) suggesting that these pathogens were enzootic within YNP wolves and coyotes. An average of 50% of wolves exhibited exposure to the protozoan parasite, Neospora caninum, although individuals? odds of exposure tended to increase with age and was temporally variable. Wolf, coyote, and fox exposure to canine distemper virus (CDV) was temporally variable, with evidence for distinct multi-host outbreaks in 1999 and 2005, and perhaps a smaller, isolated outbreak among wolves in the interior of YNP in 2002. The years of high wolf-pup mortality in 1999 and 2005 in the northern region of the park were correlated with peaks in CDV seroprevalence, suggesting that CDV contributed to the observed mortality. -- Methodology/Principal Findings.

They have been able to adapt to urbanization and continue to thrive in the wild. The coyote is also considered a top down keystone species. As such, coyote management can influence how other species are managed. Female coyotes can become sexually mature once they experience their first estrus cycle in the first year of life. Gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) occur throughout Texas. Both male and female gray foxes can attain sexual maturity at an early age. Females on average breed for the first time at about 9-10 months of age. A better understanding of the age structure and survival rate of both species, we can better understand how many possible individuals we have that will be in prime breeding age, and how exploitation of the species may be effecting structure of the population. Given that both species are harvested in predator hunts and nuisance animal situations, I wanted to explore age structure and survival of coyotes and gray foxes in western Texas. I collected the lower canine tooth from 378 coyotes from the Panhandle and southwest areas of Texas. I also collected 288 lower canine teeth of gray fox samples from the Edwards Plateau and the Trans Pecos ecoregion. The teeth were processed for cementum annuli to access age for each individual. I then developed age distributions and used these distributions to calculate annual survival rates using a-structured regression. The overall survival of coyotes in Texas was 0.659. For females in total, annual survival was 0.709. Males annual survival was 0.686. The annual survival of all the gray foxes together is 0.650. Females annual survival was 0.647. Male's annual survival was 0.643. The coyote and gray fox are adaptive species and can survive in different habitats and situations. The age structure in both species does suggest that exploitation is changing the age structure towards a younger dominant composition. However, these age structures also suggest that all of the populations I examined have not been over-harvested. Shifting populations to younger age classes can reduce age at maturity and increases litter sizes. Thus, the demographic strategy of these species apparently allows them to be resilient to current exploitation levels in this region.
