Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thanksgiving Sermon: Preached at the Union Service of the First South Congregational Churches, New Britain, Conn;, November 26, 1863 And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honor, and that thou mayest be a holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken. This day of National Thanksgiving is like a watch-tower of the ancient Hebrews, into which the prophets ascended to read the signs of the times, and to receive the solemn vision Of God. We have laid aside the ordinary cares of life, and come up to Mount Zion, that our minds may be illumined by the Infinite Light, and our hearts led in the way of holi ness and truth. It is always the misfortune of those who live in perilous times, that they do not realize the great interests at stake. Standing in a forest, we forget that the little springs at our feet, are rolled onward into mighty rivers. Surrounded by the clouds and darkness Of war, we become absorbed in petty temporary interests, and blind to the vast issues involved. This day affords a high outlook, that with consecrated heart and purged eye, we may forget ourselves, and see afar. And first of all may the voice of praise rise from our lips, and the incense Of thanksgiving ascend from our hearts, to Almighty God from Whom all blessings come. Let us bless Him for healthful seasons, for abundant harvests, for the means of knowledge, for social blessings, and for religious liberty. Let us thank God for comfortable homes, for holyaffections, for the lessons and disciplines of faith, and for the hopes of immortality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thanksgiving Sermons The author is aware that Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday. In some form it has existed in the nation almost from the beginning. In 1621 Governor Bradford made provision for a day Of rejoicing after the gathering Of the first harvest by the New England colonists. In 1623 a drought prevailed, and a day of fasting was ap pointed. The rain came while prayers were rising, and the day was promptly changed to one of thanksgiving. The governors of the colonies fixed the custom for our people. During the Revolutionary War, Congress annually recommended a day Of thanksgiv ing. In 1864 President Lincoln sent forth a proclamation for a national thanksgiving, and the example of the Great Commoner has been followed by all of his successors in the Presidency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thanksgiving: A Sermon Preached in the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, November 28, 1861 The simple and obvious meaning of the text is, that we have always something to be thankful for; that gratitude is due to God in every earthly condition in which a living man can be placed. And this is a truth appropriate to this occasion, for we are observing our great national festival in circumstances wherein some men judge that the keeping a fast in sackcloth were a more seemly service. It cannot be denied that we are to-day a deeply distressed people, and that our attempted offerings of thanksgiving will ascend largely from desolate households and sorrowing hearts. To this occasion, therefore, the usual style of service would be manifestly inapt. We have little of the old exulting spirit; and amid this evident and almost overwhelming despondency, need exhortation even unto the solemn duty of thanksgiving. Such an exhortation is the text; and in view of it the question, which perhaps we have all asked, Why should we keep festival when fasting better becomes us? appears ungodly, infidel, blasphemous; for we have here a Divine command, "To give thanks in every thing," (i. e.) in every actual or possible earthly condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thanksgiving Sermon: Preached in the Presbyterian Church of Antrim, N. H., November 29th, 1855 Text: jude 3. Contend earnestly for the faith which was once delivered to the Saints. The contest, enjoined by the text, has been no less a contest for human freedom than for religious truth. The Apostle, in a general address to christians, says, Contend. And for what? Not for the world's wealth or pleasure or glory. He had no need to exhort to a contest for either of these. Contend for the faith. And what faith? Not for human opinions; not for the dogmas of any earth-born philosophy. Many, without any entreaty, have ever been found ready to enter this field of warfare. But contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints. Explain and de fend those truths which God has, at sundry times, revealed to his servants and his people, for their well-being and the well-being of the world. And how contend? Earnestly, - not slothfully nor in differently, but earnestly, with the whole soul. And men have contended. They have sacrificed ease and plea sure and wealth and all that the world calls glory and honor, yea and life too in the conflict. They have contended with earnestness. They would have sooner given up everything else than the truth of God. Great multitudes have died in the struggle. Others have come after them to enjoy the blessed fruits of the victory: and we, ' here assembled to-day, are among the most favored heirs to that inestimable inheritance which has been purchased at the expense of rivers of christian blood. Book Thanksgiving Sermon

Download or read book Thanksgiving Sermon written by Jonathan Brace and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thanksgiving Sermon: Preached in the First Church, Milford, Conn;, November 25, 1858 The Poet - Young, tells us "'Tis greatly wise to talk with our past hours;" and David thought that it was well to call to mind former days. "I remember," he says, "the days of old." The future is mostly concealed from us. We cannot lift the curtain which hides it from our sight. Not so with the past. To that we can go back, and find in the review entertainment and profit. The advantages of the study of history are many and various. It invigorates and enriches the mind; it improves the memory; it gratifies a natural and worthy desire to be acquainted with remote transactions; it enables us to avail ourselves of the experience of our predecessors; it informs and regulates our judgment; and it "is profitable for reproof, for correction," and for strengthening the sentiments of virtue. Indeed, a knowledge of history is not only indispensable to the man of letters, but should be sought by every person who would not be often confounded, and mortified because of his ignorance.
