Book excerpt: Written for both a general and academic audience, this full-length biography of Feargus O'Connor (1795-1855) provides an overview of a turbulent and active political career, from positions in journalism and the House of Commons to mass demonstrations for the People's Charter and working for the Chartist Land company. At the height of his popularity as a leader of the Chartists' campaign for democratic reform, O'Connor enjoyed the support of millions of working people. But more than any other popular leader of his generation, he sought to bring the "working Saxon and Celt" together in a common struggle, an aspiration that had its roots deep in the Irish past. Uniquely, this account restores the Irish dimension of O'Connor's career to its proper place by offering, for the first time, an evaluation of his heritage, his ideas, and his public life on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in 1839, the Anti-Corn Law League was one of the most important campaigns to introduce the ideas of economic liberalism into mainstream political discourse in Britain. Its aspiration for free trade played a crucial role in defining the agenda of nineteenth-century liberalism and shaping the modern British state. Its faith in the free market still resonates in Britain's public policy debates today. This is the first comprehensive study of the League which makes use of recent methodological developments in social history.
Download or read book Chartism Commemoration and the Cult of the Radical Hero written by Matthew Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartism, the British mass movement for democratic and social rights in the 1830s and 1840s, was profoundly shaped by the radical tradition from which it emerged. Yet, little attention has been paid to how Chartists saw themselves in relation to this diverse radical tradition or to the ways in which they invented their own tradition. Paine, Cobbett and other ‘founding fathers’, dead and alive, were used and in some cases abused by Chartists in their own attempts to invent a radical tradition. By drawing on new and exciting work in the fields of visual and material culture; cultures of heroism, memory and commemoration; critical heritage studies; and the history of political thought, this book explores the complex cultural work that radical heroes were made to perform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the assumption – just as alive today as it was in the nineteenth century – that the political sphere was an arena of reason in which feelings had no part to play. It shows that feelings were a central, albeit contested, aspect of the political culture of the period. Radical leaders were accused of inflaming the passions; the state and its propertied supporters were charged with callousness; radicals grounded their claims to citizenship in the universalist assumption that workers had the same capacity for feeling as their social betters (denied at this time). It sheds new light on the relationship between protest movements and the state by showing how one of the central issues at stake in the conflict between radicals and their oppressors was the feelings of the propertied classes.
