Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how, in this curriculum of five books 1, 1A, 2, 3, and 4, music elements (music concepts) are scope-and-sequence taught through learning the active-participation music skills of listening, singing / chanting, moving, playing / performing, improvising / creating, composing / arranging, reading / notating, and describing / evaluating. Also discover how music skills begin with discrimination (rote) learning and progress to the limitless creative levels of inferential learning. Discover how every person at any age can sing in tune (tonal skill) and perform a steady beat (rhythm skill). Singing in tune develops into maintaining intonation with an accurate tonal center, and performing a steady beat develops into maintaining a consistent tempo with an accurate meter. These two skills are the Gateway Skills to all of music. When learned, spectators turn into life-long participators, and the whole realm of music becomes available. Discover how a curriculum, which is not a textbook or music series book, can be your pathway into ultimate teaching freedom and your students' exciting journey into realms of limitless artistic creativity. Discover in Book 1 how every student can master the two music gateway skills starting with the aural (performing rhythm and tonal skills), through learning the vocabulary, to reading the symbolic (written notation). Download or read book Kod ly in the First Grade Classroom written by Micheal Houlahan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-twentieth century, Zoltán Kodály's child-developmental philosophy for teaching music has had significant positive impact on music education around the world, and is now at the core of music teaching in the United States and other English speaking countries. The Kodály Today handbook series is the first comprehensive system to update and apply the Kodály concepts to teaching music in elementary school classrooms. Kodály in the First Grade Classroom provides teachers with a step-by-step road map for developing children's performance, creative movement, and literacy skills in an organic and thoughtful manner. Through six years of field-testing with music kindergarten teachers in the United States, Great Britain, and Hungary (the home country of Zoltán Kodály), authors Micheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka have developed a methodology specifically for 21st century classrooms. Houlahan and Tacka use the latest research findings in cognition and perception to create a system not only appropriate for the developmental stages of first grade students but also one which integrates vertically between elementary music classes. The methods outlined in this volume encourage greater musical ability and creativity in children by teaching them to sing, move, play instruments, and develop music literacy skills. In addition, Kodály in the First Grade Classroom promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills. Although the book uses the Kodály philosophy, its methodology has also been tested by teachers certified in Orff and Dalcroze, and has proven an essential guide for teachers no matter what their personal philosophy and specific training might be. Numerous children's songs are incorporated into Kodály in the First Grade Classroom, as well as over 35 detailed lesson plans that demonstrate how music and literacy curriculum goals are transformed into tangible musical objectives. Scholarly yet practical and accessible, this volume is sure to be an essential guide for kindergarten and early childhood music teachers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Line by Line: Progressive Staff Method Arrangements for Elementary Music Literacy, author Stephanie L. Standerfer harnesses years of pedagogical expertise in a practical guide that promotes music learning by experience rather than imitation and memorization. Using well-known songs and instrumental accompaniments, this book contains a new practical method for teaching music literacy. The book's lesson plans first introduce concepts to the ear and body that allow students to internalize the sound and feeling before learning the symbol. Through this method, students learn and understand songs without the teacher modeling them and develop musicianship skills in the process. The arrangements include instrument parts for the typical complement of melodic instruments including glockenspiels, xylophones, and metallophones. Each arrangement includes at least one instrument part for more advanced learners, and one or more parts for students at lower skill levels. Music educators then complete individual lesson plans by teaching instrumental parts, again from notation instead of imitation. In this method, each song is taught over five to seven class periods as short segments of a regular class meeting, leaving time for other musical experiences such as listening lessons or folk dances. Taking every student into consideration, Line by Line also suggests ways to address specific student needs for those who need more time to process or who have specific diagnosed issues.

Book excerpt: Children are inherently musical. They respond to music and learn through music. Music expresses children's identity and heritage, teaches them to belong to a culture, and develops their cognitive well-being and inner self worth. As professional instructors, childcare workers, or students looking forward to a career working with children, we should continuously search for ways to tap into children's natural reservoir of enthusiasm for singing, moving and experimenting with instruments. But how, you might ask? What music is appropriate for the children I'm working with? How can music help inspire a well-rounded child? How do I reach and teach children musically? Most importantly perhaps, how can I incorporate music into a curriculum that marginalizes the arts? This book explores a holistic, artistic, and integrated approach to understanding the developmental connections between music and children. This book guides professionals to work through music, harnessing the processes that underlie music learning, and outlining developmentally appropriate methods to understand the role of music in children's lives through play, games, creativity, and movement. Additionally, the book explores ways of applying music-making to benefit the whole child, i.e., socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively, and linguistically.

Book STEAM in the General Music Classroom

Download or read book STEAM in the General Music Classroom written by Rachel E. Renick and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more and more schools choosing to focus on science, technology, mathematics, and engineering, it has become apparent that it is time for music teachers to begin considering interdisciplinary methods in the classroom. Researchers have shown that integrating music in the general curriculum increase student achievement. In addition, many studies have shown that integration with music helps motivate students to learn and improve their attitude. It has also been discovered that music can improve cognitive development, which is important for each discipline. With this information in mind, the purpose of this Capstone project was to develop interdisciplinary instructional units that can be used to effectively integrate music, science, technology, engineering, language arts, and social studies into the 4th grade elementary general music curriculum. Three units were created. Each is aligned with the Georgia state music standards and includes student learning objectives, teaching and learning procedures, advice for differentiated instruction, a list of materials and resources, and assessment strategies and instruments.

Book The Effects of an Integrated Reading and Music Instructional Approach on Fourth grade Students Reading and Music Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of an Integrated Reading and Music Instructional Approach on Fourth grade Students Reading and Music Achievement written by James C. Eaton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated instruction is among the most widely discussed concepts in educational reform with resurgence during the past decade. Arts integration has become an area of great interest as schools discover the power of the arts when used as a catalyst for teaching across the curriculum. Recently, there has been an interest in determining whether music instruction would improve reading skills. Although there appears to be a positive relationship between music and reading abilities, research has not determined that integrated reading and music instruction improves reading achievement. Using a quasi-experimental approach, the researcher determined whether integrated reading and music instruction increased or decreased reading and music achievement. Two classes of fourth grade students in a suburban Maryland elementary school were randomly selected as the experimental and control groups. Thirty-seven students participated in the study. Fourteen females and five males received integrated reading and music instruction for twelve weeks during the final thirty minutes of the regularly scheduled reading instruction. The control group was comprised of nine males and nine females and only received music instruction during their final thirty minutes of their scheduled reading instruction. Reading and music achievement was measured prior to and after treatment. Pretest and posttest scores on the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) and assessments from the music text book series, Spotlight on Music, were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results showed that an integrated approach positively affected fourth grade students' reading and music achievement. Continued research is warranted to enable educators to make decisions for integrating music and reading instruction. Developing measures of music achievement for integrated instruction, refining integrated content, and assessing learning within the integrated classroom continue as promising avenues for investigation.
