Book Senior Fitness And Fall Prevention Guide

Download or read book Senior Fitness And Fall Prevention Guide written by Ron Kness and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-27 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercise is important during every stage of your life, but even more so as you approach your senior years. That's because exercise can potentially reduce your risk of developing chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When you do an aerobic activity like running, biking, or swimming, you're forcing your heart to work harder to keep up with your movement. In the process, you're also helping to lower your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart rate. Exercise also plays a pivotal role in mood. When you exercise, your body releases more endorphins, also known as one of the "feel-good" hormones. Endorphins can substantially improve your mood and even reduce pain, often compared to the effects of heavy-duty painkillers. Even though exercise takes a lot out of you in terms of energy, exercise also has great potential to boost your energy levels in the long-term. That's a direct result of the newly released endorphins and a better ability to get quality sleep at night. Perhaps the most noticeable benefits of exercise during your senior years are the improvements in strength, balance, and mobility. You can achieve this through strength and aerobic training and it greatly reduces your risk of falls, osteoporosis, and arthritis. But exercising also goes further than what was mentioned above - it can lower your risks for falls. By increasing your strength, you can lift your feet higher which can prevent you from catching your toe on the edge of a step, for example, and tripping (and risk breaking a bone). Plus, my book also discusses things you can do around your house to lessen your chances of falling. Measures taken to prevent falls is very important as we age. After all, falling is the number one reason why seniors break bones - especially hips. When that happens, many of them do not fully recover and end up losing their independence by living in an assisted-living facility or nursing home because they can no longer take care of themselves If you have an aging family member (or are one yourself), you owe it to them (or yourself) to get this book. The information can not only slowing down the aging process, but also preserve a better quality of life.

Book Integrated Care and Fall Prevention in Active and Healthy Aging

Download or read book Integrated Care and Fall Prevention in Active and Healthy Aging written by Eklund, Patrik and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s world, healthy aging and a fulfilling lifestyle are important to older members of society, with many opting to remain as independent and mobile as possible for as long as possible. However, elderly individuals tend to have a variety of functional limitations that can increase the likelihood of debilitating falls and injuries. Assessments of functionality are very often only performed following an accident, which implies a hindsight bias because results do not necessarily reflect pre-accidental performance capacities. Furthermore, these belated measures do little to reduce the likelihood of new falls. As such, it is imperative that personalized preventative approaches are taken to prevent falls. Integrated Care and Fall Prevention in Active and Healthy Aging contains state-of-the-art research and practices related to integrated care, fall prevention, and aging throughout areas ranging from medical to social aspects of care, health economy, standards, pathways and information scopes, practices and guidelines, technology, etc. Covering topics such as active care and healthy aging, it is ideal for doctors, gerontologists, nursing home and long-care facility staff, scientists, researchers, students, academicians, and practitioners working in care pathways involving good practices of fall prevention in home care and community care settings.

Book Living Safely Aging Well

Download or read book Living Safely Aging Well written by Dorothy A. Drago and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older adults can stay healthy longer by avoiding injury at home. As we age, our sense of balance and our vision, hearing, and cognition become less sharp. Aging-related changes greatly increase our risk of injury. In Living Safely, Aging Well, nationally recognized safety expert Dorothy A. Drago spells out how to prevent injury while cooking, gardening, sleeping, driving—and just walking around the house. In the first part of the book, Drago describes the causes of injuries by type—falls, burns, poisoning, and asphyxia—and explains how to decrease the risk of each. She then explores the home environment room by room, pointing out potential hazards and explaining how to avoid them, for example, by installing night lights, eliminating glass coffee tables, and using baby monitors. Lively line drawings make it easy for readers to visualize risks and implement prevention techniques. Living Safely, Aging Well pays special attention to hazards encountered by people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. A chapter devoted to health literacy helps people and caregivers make the best use of the medical care system and a chapter on driving helps evaluate when it is no longer safe to be behind the wheel.
