Book excerpt: This self-study focuses on K-12 superintendent in a suburban school district navigating high levels of entrenched conflict between the school district and a large number of community members, some of whom had formed a group to apply political pressure on the school board and administration. Using a qualitative methodology, this ethnographic research applied the principles of self-study to a case-study of the superintendent attempting to resolve school-community conflict over the consolidation of two high schools with a bond issue to finance construction of a new high school building. The research question focused on identifying the skills, attitudes and approaches most important for a leader seeking to institutionalize the value of community outreach and partnership where pre-existing conditions provide significant obstacles to unified support for school systems. Superintendent vulnerability and authenticity, combined with validation of community concerns, were found to be important components mitigating the continuance of conflict. Maintenance of personal credibility and relative impartiality were also identified as significant components in rebuilding community trust. Specific process tools essential for ultimate conflict resolution included provision of detailed summary feedback to residents and offering the opportunity to make a compelling choice affecting the ultimate outcome. Strong interpersonal relationships and deep empathic dialogue emerged as the two key factors facilitating the resolution of this community conflict, eventually resulting in voter passage of a bond issue to finance construction of a unified high school facility.
