Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive guide to the physics and observations of Radio Recombination Lines from astronomical sources, written for astronomers, physicists, and graduate students. It is suitable for a graduate-level textbook. It includes the history of RRL detections, the astrophysics underlying their intensities and line shapes including topics like departures from LTE and Stark broadening, the maximum possible size of an atom, as well as detailed descriptions of the astronomical topics for which RRLs have proved to be effective tools. The text includes more than 250 equations and 110 illustrations. It also contains hundreds of specific references to the astronomical literature to enable readers to explore additional details. The appendix includes supplementary information such as the detailed physics underlying the Bohr atomic model, tables of RRL frequencies including fine structure components, techniques for calculating hydrogenic oscillator strengths, FORTRAN code for calculating departure coefficients, and a discussion with formulas for converting observational (telescope) intensity units to astrophysical ones.

Book Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium

Download or read book Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium written by Lyman Spitzer, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium discusses the nature of interstellar matter, with a strong emphasis on basic physical principles, and summarizes the present state of knowledge about the interstellar medium by providing the latest observational data. Physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium are treated, with frequent references to observational results. The overall equilibrium and dynamical state of the interstellar gas are described, with discussions of explosions produced by star birth and star death and the initial phases of cloud collapse leading to star formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 20 contains literature published in 1977 and received before February 20, 1978; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. BouSka, Prague, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by Prof. P. Brosche, Bonn, who supplied us with literature concerning some border fields of astronomy.

Book H107 alpha Recombination line Emission 4800 MHz and 1666 MHz Continuum Emission in the HII Region RCW38

Download or read book H107 alpha Recombination line Emission 4800 MHz and 1666 MHz Continuum Emission in the HII Region RCW38 written by Miquela Vigil and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results from observations of H107[alpha] recombination-line emission and the related 4800 MHz continuum emission of the HII region RCW 38 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We find the continuum emission to be concentrated in a ring-like structure with the 05 star, IRS2, approximately centered in the cavity within the ring. The temperature of the ionized gas ranges from 5200 to 7500 K and the emission is optically thin. The H107[alpha] line emission appears to be confined within the continuum ring. We also find the continuum ring to encircle the peak in the diffuse X-ray gas. The radio continuum emission matches closely to NIR observations with a bright western ridge containing the peak in the 10[mu]m emission known as IRS1 (Frogel et al. 1974) apparent in both observations. From calculations of continuum and line parameters, we estimate the spectral type of the ionizing source for the region to be an 05/06 star which is consistent with the spectral type of IRS2.
