Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is home to fifteen species of breeding birds of prey, from the hedgerow-hopping Sparrowhawk to the breathtaking White-tailed Eagle. In this handsomely illustrated book, acclaimed British filmmaker and naturalist David Cobham offers unique and deeply personal insights into Britain's birds of prey and how they are faring today. He delves into the history of these magnificent birds and talks in depth with the scientists and conservationists who are striving to safeguard them. In doing so, he profiles the writers, poets and filmmakers who have done so much to change the public's perception of birds of prey. There are success stories—five birds of prey that were extinct have become reestablished with viable populations—but persecution is still rife. Featuring drawings by famed wildlife artist Bruce Pearson, this book reveals why we must cherish and celebrate our birds of prey, and why we neglect them at our peril.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This illuminating book serves as homage to a brilliant naturalist and extraordinary birds. If you loved H Is for Hawk, put this next on your reading list.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) From the merlin to the golden eagle, the goshawk to the honey buzzard, James Macdonald Lockhart’s stunning debut is a quest of beak, talon, wing, and sky. On its surface, Raptor is a journey across the British Isles in search of fifteen species of birds of prey, but as Lockhart seeks out these elusive predators, his quest becomes so much more: an incomparably elegant elegy on the beauty of the British landscape and, through the birds, a journey toward understanding an awesome power at the heart of the natural world—a power that is majestic and frightening in its strength, but also fragile. Linking his journey to that of his muse—nineteenth-century Scottish naturalist and artist William MacGillivray—Lockhart shares his own encounters with raptors ranging from the scarce osprey to the successfully reintroduced red kite, a species once protected by medieval royal statute, revealing with poetic immediacy the extraordinary behaviors of these birds and the extreme environments they call home. Creatures both worshipped and reviled, raptors have a talon-hold on the human heart and imagination. With his book, Lockhart unravels these complicated ties in a work by turns reverent and euphoric—an interweaving of history, travel, and nature writing at its best. A hymn to wanderers, to the land and to the sky, and especially to the birds, Raptor soars. “Lockhart’s soaring debut is a perfect synthesis of travel writing and natural history.” —Financial Times

Book 100 Years 100 Photos White Tailed Sea Eagles

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the paperback edition. The hardback edition of this book is available, for the same price, at: www.IrelandsFirst.com I have been passionate about raptors ever since I can remember. I don't know what it is about them that attracts me, but this fascination brought me to Mountshannon, Lough Derg, County Clare to photograph the first Irish White Tailed Sea Eagles in over 100 years. This historic event was a huge eye-opener for me. I'd seen lots of birds of prey in my life, but never like this. I was able to see the same couple every day going about their business, building a nest, mating and raising young. From the beginning, this story just got better and better, until an unforeseen event made my heart sink. I thought it was all over, but it wasn't. Once again, the story picked up and became a huge success for Ireland's first White Tailed Sea Eagles in 100 years. This story needs to be read to understand how amazing these parents are, especially with all the hardships and heart-stopping moments that they had to deal with. I truly loved filming, photographing and documenting this historic event and I am very proud to have been a part of it. I really hope you enjoy this photographic book. I wish these magnificent birds all the luck in the world. I hope that they live long and in a few years come back to Lough Derg to reproduce. Hopefully, I'll be there to film them!

Book RSPB Spotlight Eagles

Download or read book RSPB Spotlight Eagles written by Mike Unwin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eagles are among the most impressive hunters of the animal world. Their predatory prowess and flying skills have imbued them with a romance and mystique that runs deep in our culture and has elevated them to emblems of freedom and power across the globe. At the same time, however, people have long seen eagles as competitors. Reviled by farmers and gamekeepers as snatchers of livestock, many species have been driven into decline by persecution and disturbance. Two species of eagle occur in Britain - among 60 worldwide - and are the focus of this book. The regal Golden Eagle is the definitive 'true' eagle and occurs in wilderness areas across the northern hemisphere; the even larger White-tailed Eagle, reintroduced to the UK after historic extinction, belongs to the separate 'sea eagles' genus. These two spectacular birds are both very rare – confined largely to the remote Scottish Highlands – and a sighting of either is one of the UK's most exciting and sought-after wildlife experiences. This highly readable study looks separately at both UK eagles, exploring how each is adapted as an apex predator in its own environment, and explores the relationship between the two. Separate chapters cover all aspects of the birds' biology and lifestyle, from defending their vast territories to raising their young. Fascinating secrets are revealed, including the brutal truth behind 'Cain and Abel' syndrome. The book also takes a look at other eagles around the world, placing the two UK species within this broader context. Finally, it examines the complex relationship that humans have enjoyed with eagles since time immemorial, spanning both culture and conservation, and offers expert tips on where and how you can watch these magnificent birds for yourself. The Spotlight series introduces readers to the lives and behaviours of our favourite animals with eye-catching, colour photography and informative expert text.

In the bitter winter of a.d. 44, the Roman troops in Britain are impatiently awaiting the arrival of spring so that the campaign to conquer the island can be renewed. But the native Britons are growing more cunning in their resistance, constantly snapping at the heels of the mighty Roman forces. When the most brutal of the native tribesmen, the Druids of the Dark Moon, capture the shipwrecked wife and children of General Plautius, quick action is called for. Two volunteers from the crack Second Legion must venture deep into hostile territory in a desperate attempt to rescue the prisoners.
