Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Due North: Being Notes of a Residence in Russia I am bound on a stern, long, cruel, rigid journey, far, far away, to the extreme right-hand top corner of the map of Europe - but first Due North. And here I am at Erquellines on the frontier of the king dom of Belgium and this is why I thanked Heaven I was here. Not very far northward is Erquellines; and yet I felt as if I had passed the Rubicon, when a parti-coloured sentry-box, the counterfeit present ment of the peculiarly sheepish-looking Belgian lion sitting on his hind-legs, with the legend Union is strength, (and, indeed, I think it would take a good many of these lions to make a strong one, ) and a posse of custom-house officers - kindly, but pud ding headed in appearance - told me that I was in the Royaume de Belgique. Book The Tsar The Empire and The Nation

Download or read book The Tsar The Empire and The Nation written by Darius Staliūnas and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses the challenge of modern nationalism to the tsarist Russian Empire. First appearing on the empire’s western periphery this challenge, was most prevalent in twelve provinces extending from Ukrainian lands in the south to the Baltic provinces in the north, as well as to the Kingdom of Poland. At issue is whether the late Russian Empire entered World War I as a multiethnic state with many of its age-old mechanisms run by a multiethnic elite, or as a Russian state predominantly managed by ethnic Russians. The tsarist vision of prioritizing loyalty among all subjects over privileging ethnic Russians and discriminating against non-Russians faced a fundamental problem: as soon as the opportunity presented itself, non-Russians would increase their demands and become increasingly separatist. The authors found that although the imperial government did not really identify with popular Russian nationalism, it sometimes ended up implementing policies promoted by Russian nationalist proponents. Matters addressed include native language education, interconfessional rivalry, the “Jewish question,” the origins of mass tourism in the western provinces, as well as the emergence of Russian nationalist attitudes in the aftermath of the first Russian revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia the Eastern Question Russia is, territorially, the largest civil division of the globe. Its total superficial area is estimated at eight millions of square miles, being more than twice the area of the whole of the United States, and comprising all the north of Europe and Asia, and the north-west corner of North America. This immense territory has given to the Russian empire an importance more imaginary than real. For, as with individuals, so with nations, - nothing, to the cursory observer, invests them so much with the appearance of strength as large landed possessions. According to this idea, however, the aborigines of this western world were a very power ful people, for the whole boundless continent was theirs; and, though divided into a great variety of tribes, they were linked together by interests that made them the common foe of the white man. Nevertheless, they melted away, at his approach, like the snows of winter before the summer's sun. Something, therefore. Beside land, is requisite to national strength. Book From Conquest to Deportation

Download or read book From Conquest to Deportation written by Jeronim Perovic and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a region on the fringes of empire, which neither Tsarist Russia, nor the Soviet Union, nor in fact the Russian Federation, ever really managed to control. Starting with the nineteenth century, it analyses the state's various strategies to establish its rule over populations highly resilient to change imposed from outside, who frequently resorted to arms to resist interference in their religious practices and beliefs, traditional customs, and ways of life. Jeronim Perovic offers a major contribution to our knowledge of the early Soviet era, a crucial yet overlooked period in this region's troubled history. During the 1920s and 1930s, the various peoples of this predominantly Muslim region came into contact for the first time with a modernising state, demanding not only unconditional loyalty but active participation in the project of 'socialist transformation'. Drawing on unpublished documents from Russian archives, Perovi? investigates the changes wrought by Russian policy and explains why, from Moscow's perspective, these modernization attempts failed, ultimately prompting the Stalinist leadership to forcefully exile the Chechens and other North Caucasians to Central Asia in 1943-4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Russia Russia is just at present on the eve of the most momentous period of its history. Within the last year we have already witnessed the prologue of the great drama which is about to be played. TO those who are not intimately acquainted with Russia and her people, this prologue must have appeared incoherent and almost impossible to under stand, for the best of reasons, that the actors did not know themselves the meaning of the parts which they were acting. It was a case of irresponsible followers rushing behind incoherent leaders. The truth is that the Russians had suddenly awakened out Of the most ghastly nightmare, and, still dazed and only half awake, the nightmare still vivid in their minds, they had but one thought - to rush madly headlong, in order to escape from its horrors. They rushed about, anywhere, anyhow, not caring where they went so long as they ran. In the same way does a patient, suffering from cardiac distress, rush about the room to try and escape from the agony which he endures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fighting Without a War: An Account of Military Intervention in North Russia This book does not assume to tell the whole story of that expedition. I did not see all of it. No man did. In addition to what I saw, how ever, I had the advantage of meeting constantly men who had seen and been in the various other fights and locations. Under the overstimulat ing circumstances of army life the very air seems full of wild rumors. This was particu larly true in the isolations of the Russian fight ing. I have felt the necessity therefore of exer cising great care not to accept as true uncor roborated army rumors. The matters of chief interest in this book, moreover, are matters of my own personal observation and knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Seen in Russia Rarely appreciated by the English. When it is remembered that the Central Govern ment in St. Petersburg controls an Empire which extends from the Baltic in the West to the Pacific Ocean in the East, to the Arctic Circle in the North, to the Caucasus Mountains, Bokhara, Persia, Turkestan, and Southern Siberia in Asia, there is no room for doubt about the necessity for firm measures. About one hundred and sixty million people claim allegiance to the Tsar, and their number doubles every sixty years. The figures are stupendous, but accurate. There are no less than eight and a half million square miles enclosed within the vast borders of Russian territory. Forests, rivers, and the rich steppes or plains (covered with millions of cattle, horses, sheep, and other animals), go to make up the giant possessions of Nicholas II., the Little Father, as his loyal subjects affectionately call him.
