Book excerpt: Cutter Boutique Classics, a Fifth Avenue garment boutique owned by a group of wealthy Dutch citizens, needs help seeking American management. They enlist a prestigious New York law firm, and reluctantly Philip Bartlett becomes a principal in the contract. Philip is young and somewhat inexperienced, and this is not the dream assignment he's been waiting for. Due to his involvement with the boutique, his sister, Theresa, has a fleeting interlude with Chet Doyle, one of the boutique's Dutch owners. Neither Philip nor Theresa knows, however, that Chet is in charge of Cutter's shady dealings. To make matters worse, Theresa makes the acquaintance of the boutique's other owners and soon finds herself in the crosshairs of one of the two women-sisters from Amsterdam. Cutter's cash flow is massive, which draws the notice of the FBI. Investigations abound, and Philip is afraid for his career and his sister. Relationships are at times tender and yet tentative. It's sometimes hard to tell who comes out on top-especially when so many lives are involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive introduction to rock mechanics treats the basics of rock mechanics in a clear and straightforward manner and discusses important design problems in terms of the mechanics of materials. This extended second edition includes an additional chapter on rock bursts and bumps, a part on basic dynamics, and numerous additional examples and exercises throughout the chapters. Developed for a complete class in rock engineering, Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics, Second Edition uniquely combines the design of surface and underground rock excavations and addresses: Rock slope stability in surface excavations, from planar block and wedge slides to rotational and toppling failures Shaft and tunnel stability, ranging from naturally supported openings to analysis and design of artificial support and reinforcement systems Entries and pillars in stratified ground Three-dimensional caverns, with an emphasis on cable bolting and backfill Geometry and forces of chimney caving, combination support, and trough subsidence Rock bursts and bumps in underground excavations, with a focus on dynamic phenomena and on fast and sometimes catastrophic failures The numerous exercises and examples familiarize the reader with solving basic practical problems in rock mechanics through various design analysis techniques and their applications. Supporting the main text, appendices provide supplementary information about rock, joint, and composite properties, rock mass classification schemes, useful formulas, and an extensive literature list. The large selection of problems at the end of each chapter can be used for homework assignments. Explanatory and illustrative in character, this volume is suited for courses in rock mechanics, rock engineering and geological engineering design for undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mining, civil engineering, and applied earth sciences. Moreover, it will form a good introduction to the subject of rock mechanics for earth scientists and engineers from other disciplines.

Book Advances in Geoengineering Geotechnologies and Geoenvironment for Earth Systems and Sustainable Georesources Management

Download or read book Advances in Geoengineering Geotechnologies and Geoenvironment for Earth Systems and Sustainable Georesources Management written by Helder I. Chaminé and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the peer-reviewed proceedings of the 1st Conference on Georesources, Geomaterials, Geotechnologies and Geoenvironment (4GEO), Porto, Portugal, on November 7–8, 2019. The book interests all researchers, practitioners, and students in engineering geosciences, geotechnics, georesources, materials engineering, and earth and environmental sciences. Georesources, geomaterials, geotechnologies, and geoenvironment are very topical subjects and therefore deserve a deeper reflection by academia, practitioners, and society. That approach is vital to a correct sustainable resource management and an engineering design with nature within a geoethical framework. Georesources, understood as geological, hydrological and energetic resources are greatly important to society. Minerals, rocks, and water are resources that, over time, have assumed an important role in the technological development of communities. Given the increase in population and the increasing needs and intensification of their use, it is very important to ensure their sustainable management. Geomaterials are functional geological materials artificially processed for the generality of the activities developed by societies. The functional geomaterials may include rock, clay, granular materials, treated soils, and industrial waste. Geotechnologies are a very important tool for decision-making, supporting the collection, mapping, processing, and analysis of data with geographical information systems and other geo-techniques used in the most diverse fields, including to support the monitoring and prediction of geohazards. The geoenvironment is a transversal field that identifies continuous earth changes and to find solutions to the resulting socioeconomic and environmental changes. Climate change, industrialization, and anthropic activity are, among others, factors of pressure and alteration of the natural environment, so minimizing impacts and emerging hazards and risks. Main topics include: 1. Geomaterials, Geotechnics, and Georesources2. Geotechnologies, Engineering Geosciences, and Geohazards3. Geoenvironment, Water, and Climate Change

  • Author : Dexter Perkins
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-07-24
  • ISBN : 0429591195
  • Pages : 557 pages

Download or read book Earth Materials written by Dexter Perkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a large and growing need for a textbook that can form the basis for integrated classes that look at minerals, rocks, and other Earth materials. Despite the need, no high-quality book is available for such a course. Earth Materials is a wide-ranging undergraduate textbook that covers all the most important kinds of (inorganic) Earth materials. Besides traditional chapters on minerals and rocks, this book features chapters on sediments and stratigraphy, weathering and soils, water and the hydrosphere, and mineral and energy deposits. Introductions to soil mechanics and rock mechanics are also included. This book steers away from the model of traditional encyclopedic science textbooks, but rather exposes students to the key and most exciting ideas and information, with an emphasis on thinking about Earth as a system. The book is written in such a manner as to support inquiry, discovery and other forms of active learning. All chapters start with a short topical story or vignette, and the plentiful photographs and other graphics are integrated completely with the text. Earth Materials will be interesting and useful for a wide range of learners, including geoscience students, students taking mineralogy and petrology courses, engineers, and anyone interested in learning more about the Earth as a system.

Book excerpt: Damaged: Musicality and Race in Early American Punk is the first book-length portrait of punk as a musical style with an emphasis on how punk developed in relation to changing ideas of race in American society from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Drawing on musical analysis, archival research, and new interviews, Damaged provides fresh interpretations of race and American society during this period and illuminates the contemporary importance of that era. Evan Rapport outlines the ways in which punk developed out of dramatic changes to America’s cities and suburbs in the postwar era, especially with respect to race. The musical styles that led to punk included transformations to blues resources, experimental visions of the American musical past, and bold reworkings of the rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues sounds of the late 1950s and early 1960s, revealing a historically oriented approach to rock that is strikingly different from the common myths and conceptions about punk. Following these approaches, punk itself reflected new versions of older exchanges between the US and the UK, the changing environments of American suburbs and cities, and a shift from the expressions of older baby boomers to that of younger musicians belonging to Generation X. Throughout the book, Rapport also explores the discourses and contradictory narratives of punk history, which are often in direct conflict with the world that is captured in historical documents and revealed through musical analysis.
