Book Ad Hoc Wireless Networking

Download or read book Ad Hoc Wireless Networking written by Xiuzhen Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless networking enables two or more computers to communicate using standard network protocols without network cables. Since their emergence in the 1970s, wireless networks have become increasingly pop ular in the computing industry. In the past decade, wireless networks have enabled true mobility. There are currently two versions of mobile wireless networks. An infrastructure network contains a wired backbone with the last hop being wireless. The cellular phone system is an exam ple of an infrastructure network. A multihop ad hoc wireless network has no infrastructure and is thus entirely wireless. A wireless sensor network is an example of a multihop ad hoc wireless network. Ad hoc wireless networking is a technique to support robust and ef ficient operation in mobile wireless networks by incorporating routing functionality into mobile hosts. This technique will be used to realize the dream of "anywhere and anytime computing", which is termed mo bile computing. Mobile computing is a new paradigm of computing in which users carrying portable devices have access to shared infrastruc ture in any location at any time. Mobile computing is a very challenging topic for scientists in computer science and electrical engineering. The representative system for ad hoc wireless networking is called MANET, an acronym for "Mobile Ad hoc NETworks". MANET is an autonomous system consisting of mobile hosts connected by wireless links which can be quickly deployed.

Download or read book Robust Loop free On demand Routing in Ad Hoc Networks written by Hari Rangarajan and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we explore new techniques for robust, efficient, loop-free on-demand routing in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) using the same information (i.e., topology information, sequence numbers, etc.,) used in prior on-demand routing protocol proposals. We provide new insights into the robustness of protocols based on destination-sequence numbers when operating with node failures and loss of routing information, and present a new destination-sequence number framework that works correctly even with failure conditions. We also show how destination-sequence numbers can be manipulated as routing labels for improving performance, rather than being strictly treated as time-stamps. We present two different routing approaches that exploit the topology information that can be collected on-demand during the route request ood search. The first approach translates topology information into labels that are then stored at nodes in strict lexicographic ordering along any successor path to a destination. Loop-freedom is maintained by allowing nodes to only pick "smaller" labels. The second approach maintains a list of topology information that should not be trusted in-addition to the known path to a destination. Using the notion of trusted topology, nodes can always make routingWe conclude our research with a new on-demand routing technique that exploits the route request search process, which is an integral part of any on-demand routing protocol. Without requiring any additional mechanisms or information, we use the uniqueness of route requests to realize a on-demand routing framework. We, then, present extensions to the basic framework to improve performance using more information that can be collected during the flood search process.

Book Robust Ant Colony Based Routing Algorithm for Mobile Ad hoc Networks

Download or read book Robust Ant Colony Based Routing Algorithm for Mobile Ad hoc Networks written by Arush S. Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses about developing a routing protocol of mobile ad hoc networks in a bio inspired manner. Algorithms inspired by collective behaviour of social insect colonies, bird flocking, honey bee dancing, etc., promises to be capable of catering to the challenges faced by tiny wireless sensor networks. Challenges include but are not limited to low bandwidth, low memory, limited battery life, etc. This thesis proposes an energy efficient multi-path routing algorithm based on foraging nature of ant colonies and considers many other meta-heuristic factors to provide good robust paths from source node to destination node in a hope to overcome the challenges posed by resource constrained sensors.

Book A Scalable and Efficient Geographic Routing and Service Provision Architecture for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book A Scalable and Efficient Geographic Routing and Service Provision Architecture for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks written by Xiaojing Xiang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supporting scalable and efficient routing and service provision in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) has been a big research challenge. In this dissertation, we propose a scalable and efficient geographic routing and service provision architecture for MANET. The architecture is designed to possess the features of scalability, efficiency, robustness and adaptability. Conventional topology-based schemes are normally hard to scale, instead, we make use of geographic information in the architecture to improve the performance. Due to the close relationship between routing and service provision, we integrate the application-layer service provision and the network-layer routing in one architecture. Such cross-layer design makes different layers to work more closely and efficiently. The architecture is composed of four components. First, an efficient hierarchical structure is built and maintained. The structure is adaptive and flexible. Specifically, the number of layers can be adjusted according to the service and management requirements. Second, a scalable service and membership management scheme is deployed on top of the hierarchical structure to efficiently track the resource and service states. Third, the traffic patterns in a service provision network are various, and we design unicast and multicast routing protocols to support robust service data delivery in the architecture. We develop two self-adaptive on-demand geographic unicast routing protocols for MANET. They can build efficient paths based on the need of user applications and adapt to various scenarios to provide efficient and reliable routing. The local topology is updated in a timely manner according to network dynamics and traffic demand. A route optimization scheme is adopted to adapt the routing path according to both topology change and actual data traffic requirements. Instead of pre-setting parameter values, each node can determine and adjust the protocol parameter values independently according to different network environments, data traffic conditions and node's own requirements. We use the second protocol to support the peer communications in the architecture. Its reactive and adaptive mechanism can meet different routing requirements in service provision networks. We also design two scalable geographic multicast protocols for MANET to implement scalable membership management and robust multicast packet delivery. The first protocol builds a network-range zone-based bi-directional tree for membership management and packet delivery. In the second protocol, a hierarchical structure is constructed based on an on demand zone structure, and both control messages and data packets are forwarded along efficient tree-shape paths without active tree structure built and maintained, which efficiently reduces the maintenance overhead and increases the reliability of the protocol. Both protocols combine location service for group members with membership management to further reduce overhead. We use the second protocol in the architecture to provide scalable and robust routing support for group communications. Finally, with the support of all the above components, the service provision functions are deployed in the architecture. The service delivery including long-term data transfers and short-term control message transmissions is supported by our unicast and multicast routing protocols. By following the hierarchical structure, we design an efficient and scalable service discovery scheme to quickly locate appropriate service providers. Based on the service states aggregated at different layers through the service management and with the assist of the hierarchical structure, efficient service coordination is implemented in service discovery and usage phases to coordinate multiple service providers to provide a service. Furthermore, robust service monitoring can also be applied in the architecture to monitor the resource and service states during service usage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

Book A Framework for Scalable Hierarchical Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book A Framework for Scalable Hierarchical Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical performance advantages of dividing a network into independent routing domains is well known; however, the actual benefits are hard to quantify and are often not sufficient to outweigh the added complexity. Justification of domains is especially hard in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETS) because reconfiguration overhead and the use of single interface routers increase. Nevertheless, the authors believe that with the right domain configuration and inter-domain routing protocol, they can get better performance using hierarchical than flat routing, especially in heterogeneous and dynamic networks. This paper proposes a framework for scalable routing in MANETs based on auto-configured optimized routing domains and an enhanced inter-domain routing scheme. To minimize overall overhead, the inter-domain routing protocol exploits existing messages needed for domain maintenance. The framework allows different routing protocols to run in each domain. OPNET simulations show the benefits of the proposed approach using OLSR for intra-domain routing. The results show significant reduction in protocol overhead, increased route stability, and increased route availability in a dynamic heterogeneous network.

Book Routing Protocols in Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Routing Protocols in Ad Hoc Networks written by Xiaoxia Huang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Wireless networks play a significant role in communication systems because of the advantages of flexible access and relatively low deployment cost. Among various wireless networks classified according to structures, wireless ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks share the same feature of no infrastructure. Although the two types of wireless networks offer a variety of applications in military, civil and research areas, they also pose many unique challenging issues. Due to the shared wireless medium, fragile wireless links, constrained power resource, limited computation capability and dynamic topologies, delay bounded reliable packet delivery from a source to the destination is a tough problem in both wireless ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks. In this dissertation, we attempt to address some methods to solve some routing problems in mobile ad hoc network (MANET), and wireless sensor networks (WSN).
