Download or read book God s Empire written by William Vance Trollinger and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other individual, William Bell Riley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Minneapolis, inspired the resurgence of Protestant fundamentalism in 1930s America. Trollinger explores the development of Riley's theology and social thought, examining in detail the rise of the Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School and other similar institutions. He sheds light upon the nature, successes, and failures of fundamentalist crusades and makes it clear that, to understand fundamentalist religion in America, one must focus upon its regional and local roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Baptists emerged from the Civil War as a divided group. Slavery, landmarkism, and other issues sundered Baptists into regional clusters who held more or less to the same larger doctrinal sentiments. As the century progressed, influences from Europe further altered the landscape. A new way to view the Bible—more human, less divine—began to shape Baptist thought. Moreover, Darwinian evolutionism altered the way religion was studied. Religion, like humanity itself, was progressing. Conservative Baptists—proto fundamentalists—objected to these alterations. Baptist bodies had a new enemy—theological liberalism. The schools were at the center of the story in the earliest days as professors, many of whom studied abroad, returned to the United States with progressive ideas that were passed on to their students. Soon these ideas were being presented at denominational gatherings or published in denomination papers and books. Baptists agitated over the new views, with some professors losing their jobs when they strayed too far from historic Baptists commitments. By 1920, the Northern Baptists, in particular, broke out into an all-out war over theology that came to be called “The Fundamentalist-Modernist” controversy. This is the fifty-year history behind that controversy.

Download or read book Popular Religious Magazines of the United States written by Mark Fackler and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1995-07-24 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magazines have long been a medium that both shapes and reflects the popular mind of Americans. This work provides profiles of some one hundred popular religious magazines currently or formerly published in the United States. Each sketches the history of a magazine and identifies its major focus, often through noting representative articles. Authors of the essays offer a critical appraisal of each magazine, assessing its contributions to popular religion and its role in shaping how ordinary men and women develop their own religious beliefs and perspectives. The essays will give users an understanding of the particular emphasis of each magazine, while the whole provides an overview of popular religious magazine publishing in the United States. This work focuses directly on those American religious periodicals, past and present, that are directed to a popular, general readership. Since the early Victorian era, periodical literature has served both to shape and to reflect the consciousness of Americans on many subjects, including religion. Hence, the purpose here is to provide a work that will introduce users to the range of popular religious periodical literature that has flourished in the United States. Some are valuable mostly for charting the development of the religious body that has served as the sponsoring agency; others provide insight into popular religious movements of their time. Some seek to promote personal piety and devotion; others serve as vehicles to gain adherents to a particular religious group or perspective. All offer important signals of the forces that have fashioned and continue to fashion the ways ordinary men and women go about the business of creating their personal religious beliefs and values, and, in many cases, how those beliefs make a difference in the public arena.

Download or read book Examining Billy Graham s Theology of Evangelism written by Thomas P. Johnston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Examining Billy Graham's Theology of Evangelism' was written to advance an unbiased understanding of Billy Graham's theology and practice. Theological examination of Graham's sermons revealed four distinct eras in his theology and practice: -The Early-Early Graham (pre-1949) -The Early Graham (1949-1955) -The Middle Graham (1955-1965) -The Later Graham (1965-present) In each of these eras Graham portrayed a discernible and distinct approach to defining evangelism, theological nomenclature, and cooperative strategy. No literature on Billy Graham discusses, in combination, this evolution in Graham's theology and practice. You are invited to take a fresh look at the teaching and practice of this man who has touched millions of lives through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
