Book excerpt: Concentrated kaolin clay slurries are found in a number of industrial operations including mine tailings surface disposal, underground paste backfill, and riverbed dredging. An understanding of the impact of solids concentration and addition of chemical species on slurry rheology is of importance to designers of pipeline transport and waste disposal systems. A project to determine the rheology of an idealized industrial kaolin clay slurry using a concentric cylinder viscometer and an experimental pipeline loop was undertaken. Additional laboratory test work including particle size analysis, slurry pH, calcium ion concentration in the slurry supernatant and particle electrophoretic mobility measurements were completed to aid in the understanding of their effects on the slurry rheology. The slurries were prepared in varying kaolin clay solids concentrations with reverse osmosis water. A flocculant, dihydrated calcium chloride (CaCl2 ¡Þ 2H2O), was added to the reverse osmosis water in concentrations equivalent to those found in typical industrial hard water supply. A dispersant, tetra-sodium pyrophosphate (TSPP, Na4P2O7) was used to disperse the clay particles for selected slurries. It was found that the kaolin clay slurries, in the absence of TSPP, exhibited yield stresses and could be characterized with either the two-parameter Bingham or Casson continuum flow models. Increasing the clay concentration in the slurry, while keeping the mass ratio of flocculant to kaolin constant, increased both the yield and plastic viscosity parameters. There was generally good agreement between the rheological parameters obtained in the Couette flow viscometer and that in the pipeline loop. In slurries for which it was possible to obtain turbulent flow, the transition to turbulent flow was predicted accurately by the Wilson & Thomas method for both Bingham and Casson models. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rheology of oil well cement (OWC) slurries is generally more complicated than that of conventional cement paste. In order to contend with bottom hole conditions (wide range of pressure and temperature), a number of additives are usually used in the OWC slurries, which exhibit different characteristics depending on the combination of admixture used. The objective of this research is to develop a fundamental understanding of the important mechanisms that affect the rheology of OWC slurry incorporating various chemical and mineral admixtures. The partial replacement of OWC using different mineral admixtures, offers both environmental and economic benefits. The mechanisms underlying the effects of chemical admixtures on the rheology of OWC slurry were investigated at different temperatures using an advanced shear-stress/shear-strain controlled rheometer. The compatibility and interactions between the binder and chemical admixtures were explored. It was found that the rheological properties of OWC slurries are highly dependent on the temperature, water/cement ratio, and the admixture used. Coupled effects of temperature and chemical admixtures had a substantial effect on the flow properties of the slurries. The results indicated that current technical data for chemical admixtures need to be validated for oil well cementing; admixtures proven effective in normal cementing work at moderate temperature may become ineffective for oil well cementing at high temperature. The coupled effects of temperature and supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) on the rheology of OWC slurry were also investigated. Because of differences in their chemical compositions and the mechanisms by which they act, OWC slurries incorporating SCMs exhibit different rheological behaviour than those prepared with pure OWC. It was found that not all SCMs act in similar manner when used as partial replacement for cement. For example, fly ash, owing to its spherical particle shape, reduces the water demand when used. On the other hand, silica fume increased the water demand because of its higher surface area. Results suggested that new generation polycarboxylate-based high-range water reducing admixtures (PCH) improved the rheological properties of all slurries at all temperature tested. However, lower PCH dosage was found to be less efficient in reducing the yield stress or plastic viscosity of OWC slurries when metakaolin (MK) or rice husk ash (RHA) were used as partial replacement for OWC. PCH was found to enhance the shear thickening behaviour of OWC slurries and the intensity of this behaviour varied with the type and amount of SCM. Such a phenomenon was amplified with metakaolin, reduced by SF, unchanged with FA and showed irregular behaviour with RHA. Furthermore, new equations were proposed using multiple regression analysis (MRA) and design of experiments (DOE) to predict the Bingham parameters (yield stress and plastic viscosity) of cement slurries prepared in combination with or without SCMs considering various parameters including the ambient temperature, chemical admixture type and dosage, and superplasticizer type and dosage. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict the rheological properties of OWC slurries. The results indicated that the predicted rheological parameters for OWC slurries were in good agreement with corresponding experimental results. However, the ANN-based model performed better than the MRA-based model or DOE-based model in predicting the rheological properties of OWC slurries.

Book excerpt: Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) was tasked to find and characterize the impact of rheological modifiers to a clay (Kaolin-Bentonite) slurry having 23.1 total wt percent solids, 1.165 g/ml, and Bingham Plastic yield stress of 13 Pa and plastic viscosity of 24 mPa-sec. The primary objective was to find rheological modifiers when blended with this clay slurry that would provide a vane yield stress of 300 Pa when the slurry was undisturbed for 24 hours. A secondary objective was to find a modifier that after shearing would produce a Bingham Plastic yield stress of 30 Pa and plastic viscosity of 30 mPa-sec. Two parallel paths were chosen with one examining a variety of organic/inorganic modifiers and another using just the inorganic modifier Laponite (R). The addition of organic modifiers hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, and hydroxypropylcellulose at a target 0.50 wt percent dramatically increased the vane yield stress over the range 311 - 724 Pa, and also increased the Bingham plastic yield stress and plastic viscosities over the range 33-112 Pa and 27-166 mPa-sec, respectively. The organic modifiers also showed elastic behavior, yielding a very unpredictable up flow curve. The 0.50 wt percent addition of inorganic modifiers magnesium aluminum silicate and hydrate magnesium aluminum silicate only increased the vane yield stress to 36-46 Pa and had little impact on the Bingham Plastic parameters. A range of an inorganic (2-4 wt percent magnesium aluminum silicate) and combination of a range of an inorganic (2-3 wt percent magnesium aluminum silicate) and organic (0.03-0.05 wt percent sodium carboxymethylcellulose) modifiers were then tested. These results showed that the target vane yield stress could be obtained but the Bingham Plastic yield stress and plastic viscosity were 3 times too high. Reducing the organic modifier weight percent by a few hundredths, the Bingham Plastic yield stress could be obtained, but then the vane yield stress would be too low. The addition of Laponite (R) (synthetic lithium aluminum silicate) increased the vane yield stress of the clay slurry to values as high as 1500 Pa. However, the flow curve behavior for the laponite samples was not predictable and the secondary objective was dropped based on customer needs and time constraints. Ultimately a 3-wt percent addition of Laponite (R) was chosen to produce a 600 Pa vane yield stress mixture.
