Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Theory of Universal Gravitation Before submitting objections to this theory, or venturing any suggestions with regard to it, a few preliminary considerations may not be out of place. It is then an established theory, is quite generally accepted, has the weight of authority in its favor, and for these reasons at least is more formidable to combat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Einstein's Theory of Gravitation Eyes for all our knowledge of the universe, which extended no further than we could see. Even the invention of the telescope did not disturb this proposition, but it is otherwise with the invention of the photographic plate. It is now conceivable that a blind man, by taking photographs and ren dering their records in some way decipherable by his fingers, could investigate the universe; but still it would remain true, that all his knowledge of anything outside the earth would be derived from the use of light and would therefore be limited by its properties. On this little earth there is, indeed, a tiny corner of the universe accessible to other senses: but feeling and taste act only at those minute distances which separate particles of matter when in contact: smell ranges over, at the utmost, a mile or two; and the greatest distance which sound is ever known to have travelled (when Krakatoa exploded in i8s3) is but a few thousand miles - a mere fraction of the earth's girdle. The scale of phenomena manifested through agencies other than light is so small that we are unlikely to reach any noteworthy precision by their study. Few people who are not astronomers have spent much thought on the limitations introduced by the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of General Relativity and Gravitation Some of my readers will miss, perhaps, in this volume the enthusiastic tone which usually permeates the books and pamphlets that have been written on the subject (with a notable exception of Einstein's own writings). Yet the author is the last man to be blind to the admirable boldness and the severe architectonic beauty of Einstein's theory. But it has seemed that beauties of such a kind are rather enhanced than obscured by the adoption of a sober tone and an apparently cold form of presentation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relativity and Gravitation Chapter II. Is intended so to bring the mind of the reader into contact with certain philosophical prob lems presented to us by our experiences with the external world and our efforts to learn the facts about it, that he may approach the subject of rela tivity with an appreciation of the place it occupies as a phase of human thought and a pillar of the scientific structure. Until the reader is aware of the existence of these problems and the directions taken by the efforts, successful and unsuccessful, to un ravel them, he is not equipped to comprehend the doctrine of relativity at all; he is in much the same case as a child whose education had reached only the primer stage, if asked to read the masterpieces of literature. He lacks not alone the vocabulary, but equally the mental background on which the vocabulary is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Theory of Gravitation and Related Phenomena Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Theory of Gravitation and Related Phenomena Classic Reprint written by William Jasper Spillman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Gravitation, and Related Phenomena This paper has been written in the brief intervals that could be spared from other duties, and was first completed in July, 1911. It was then laid aside and remained untouched for four years, though during this time spare moments were devoted to further study of the subject. In August, 1915, a change was made in one of the assumptions concerning the properties of the ether, and about one fifth of the paper was rewritten. The writer regrets that time has not been available for fuller development of the theory. The idea that the gravitational attraction between two bodies is due to distortion of the ether between them, in virtue of which a stress exists which is inversely proportional to the distortion causing it, which idea is more or less vaguely expressed in the literature of the subject, and which appears to be more or less firmly fixed in the minds of many physicists, has always seemed abhorrent to the writer. According to this idea, the potential energy represented by the attraction between the bodies of the universe is stored in the ether, the total energy increasing as the stress representing it decreases. According to the theory here presented this energy is dynamic, and is found in the internal energy of atoms. The amount of energy of motion a body can generate by attraction on other bodies is thus limited to the amount of its own internal energy. Book excerpt: A vivid and captivating narrative about how modern science broke free of ancient philosophy, and how theoretical physics is returning to its unscientific roots In the early seventeenth century Galileo broke free from the hold of ancient Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy. He drastically changed the framework through which we view the natural world when he asserted that we should base our theory of reality on what we can observe rather than pure thought. In the process, he invented what we would come to call science. This set the stage for all the breakthroughs that followed--from Kepler to Newton to Einstein. But in the early twentieth century when quantum physics, with its deeply complex mathematics, entered into the picture, something began to change. Many physicists began looking to the equations first and physical reality second. As we investigate realms further and further from what we can see and what we can test, we must look to elegant, aesthetically pleasing equations to develop our conception of what reality is. As a result, much of theoretical physics today is something more akin to the philosophy of Plato than the science to which the physicists are heirs. In The Dream Universe, Lindley asks what is science when it becomes completely untethered from measurable phenomena?
