Book A Review of the Environmental Behavior of Uranium Derived from Depleted Uranium Alloy Penetrators

Download or read book A Review of the Environmental Behavior of Uranium Derived from Depleted Uranium Alloy Penetrators written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of depleted uranium (DU) penetrators as armor-piercing projectiles in the field results in the release of uranium into the environment. Elevated levels of uranium in the environment are of concern because of radioactivity and chemical toxicity. In addition to the direct contamination of the soil with uranium, the penetrators will also chemically react with rainwater and surface water. Uranium may be oxidized and leached into surface water or groundwater and may subsequently be transported. In this report, we review some of the factors affecting the oxidation of the DU metal and the factors influencing the leaching and mobility of uranium through surface water and groundwater pathways, and the uptake of uranium by plants growing in contaminated soils. 29 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Depleted Uranium in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Download or read book Depleted Uranium in Bosnia and Herzegovina written by United Nations Environment Programme and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depleted uranium (DU) ammunition was used in the years 1994-95 during the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following on from previous UNEP field studies in Kosovo (2001, ISBN 0119869667) and in Serbia and Montenegro (2002, ISBN 9280721461), this report assesses the presence and extent of DU contamination in 14 sites investigated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the corresponding risks to the environment, and possible mitigating actions. DU could easily be found at three of the sites investigated, confirmed by the physical presence of penetrators and jackets, as well as by soil, bio-indicator and air samples. For the first time in UNEP's studies of DU contamination in the Balkans, DU was also found in drinking water samples, albeit at extremely low levels, as well as in air samples taken from buildings currently in use. The report recommends precautionary decontamination and clean-up measures. Given the remaining scientific uncertainties on the long-term behaviour of DU in the natural environment, it calls for further studies to be done in other regions where DU ammunition has been used.

Book Depleted Uranium in Kosovo

Download or read book Depleted Uranium in Kosovo written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of the first-ever international assessment of the environmental impact of depleted uranium (DU) when used in a real conflict situation. Following the confirmation by NATO that DU had been used during the Kosovo conflict, the United Nations Environment Program organized a scientific field mission to investigate the possible environmental consequences. This report presents its findings and conclusions on the presence and extent of DU contamination at the areas studied, the corresponding risks to the environment, and possible mitigation actions.

Book Sources Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation UNSCEAR 2016 Report

Download or read book Sources Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation UNSCEAR 2016 Report written by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.

Book Radioactive Particles in the Environment

Download or read book Radioactive Particles in the Environment written by Deborah Oughton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive particles have been released to the environment from a number of sources, including nuclear weapon tests, nuclear accidents and discharges from nuclear installations. Particle characteristics influence the mobility, biological uptake and effects of radionuclides, hence information on these characteristics is essential for assessing environmental impact and risks. This publication presents a series of papers covering sources and source term characterisation, methodologies for characterizing particles, and the impact of particles on the behaviour of radioactive particles in the environment. Sources covered include the Chernobyl accident, nuclear weapons accidents at Thule and Palomares accident, the discharges from Dounreay and Krashnoyarsk, and depleted uranium in Kosovo and Kuwait. The overall aim is that an increased understanding of particle characteristics and behavior will help to reduce some of the uncertainties in environmental impact and risk assessment for particle contaminated areas.
